Mystery Model - Question for Moderators
John Allen replied to David Lester's topic in Wood ship model kits
Marc is about as close as you can get. Amati has a Black Swan not exact but maybe an updated version (morphing sounds good) -
I agree with Mark, hang, before I start I will use a camera pop pics of small details or large on steps that may cause a problem on all plans , then reduce or enlarge to view better to prevent hopping up and down, then place in order of plan # and have them at hand as I proceed. Sounds convoluted but works with limited space. Side benefit I learned from Mamoli Victory is some assemblies or rigging in plan 4 is added to in plan 6 and should have been addressed in plan 4, it avoids headaches later know this sounds off the wall but works for me.

HMS SUSSEX 1693 by 8sillones
John Allen replied to 8sillones's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1501 - 1750
EXCEPTIONAL -
Is it possible to drill a hole directly under the mast cap? Probably a stupid question, if you have no other options.

Ken, Extremely fine build attacked with precision, that being said I immensely enjoyed the pictures you inserted along the way it made your build much more interesting.

Tools You Can't Live Without
John Allen replied to Justin P.'s topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Man, I never use alcohol as a reward but as a tool. When I am vexed by a particular assembly and my head is hurting, fingers and hands twisted in knots a good snokering makes things very clear. Or it seems so at the time!! -
Patrick, That's a mighty big ship to be so small your attention to details down to the smallest accommodations is amazing this Buds for you.

Frank, Just ran thru your build, many excellent Skipjack builds on this site, from what I see so far it is going to top the list as the best Skipjack builds. KUDOS

Old Floquil paints?
John Allen replied to MEDDO's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Had received several bottles when buying a collection on craigslist. They were pretty old, before chucking them shook up pretty good stirred with a dremel very slow speed. Looked good I painted each color on raw wood checked a couple of days later, No separation or bubbling, or peeling so I kept all. Paints are expensive so I saved a couple of bucks. -
Mark, I Know you remember when I had to decide to redo all the ratlines on the Vic. I had several toddies wrote down pluses and negatives. With a clear head the next day I did the same. Was no help! But the old adage if the shoe fits wear it, well it didn't and I grabbed the scissors and cut. Made the right decision I would not have been satisfied leaving it. If it does not feel right change it then have the good luck your the master.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
