  1. Bug, what a great tribute to a great Model Shipwright. You did an amazing job. Now that it is finished I think Augie can finally hang his Moose on the wall. Those that were part of that banter a few years ago will know what I mean here. That was quite an honorable feat that you have accomplished here. We've lost two of our friends here with Augie and George Lackie both before their time. It was an honor to have known them both and how they contributed to this Forum and the world. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done and we'll bend an elbow to Augie and you tonight. God Bless you for all you did. Big Smile Augie - Big Smile, John
  2. Wow Bruce, been away for a few works and dang - you're finished! Outstanding work. You have done a wonderful job with this ship. It is difficult, to say the least. You have just shown me that I am so happy I built the Whaleboats prior to finishing the rigging so that all I had to do was tie them off to the davits, do the Cutting-In-Stage and mount the ship to the base, plus my little extras - whale-and rigged whaleboat to the base. If I would have had to make whaleboats after all the rigging I think I'd still be working on it....Great my friend, you should be very proud. Hope all has been going well for you, John
  3. Hi Max, I invite you to check my Proxxon website. I am a member and one of the sponsors. Perhaps you can find what you need. PM me with any specific requests or questions. Thanks, John http://www.proxxontoolsdiscount.com
  4. Hi Derek and Scott. Thanks for the response. I had to put that up on my site as I was receiving 4-6 inquiries a week for items to Canada. I would put in several hours working up prices, searching shipping cost to find the best rates only to have 95% of the people raise cain about the shipping, accuse me of ripping them off and resulting in no order. I'm too old for that. I only work on a 4-5% margin, Paypal and credit cards charge me 3%. I do this mainly as a service for modelers and a little supplement to my Social Security. My volume is not enough for Proxxon to give me a decent discount. Anyone from Canada reading this and wanting Proxxon tools should PM me with their desires and I'll work you up a price, just bear in mind that shipping costs are probably double what you think they will be. Maybe Trump's changes to NAFTA will help remedy this. There is absolutely no reason for these expensive shipping expenses - either way. So much for my soap box rant....lol. Let me know if I can help, John
  5. Hi Scott, I am the Proxxon Dealer and one of the Sponsors on this Forum. PM me for a special price for members here. Just click on the "Proxxon" ad on the right hand side of the main page here on the Forum to go to my website for full specs on the lathe as well as pictures. I have used the DB 250 lathe for all my ship and model building and it works flawlessly. It has a hole running through the motor end so that a long dowel can fit through it and allows for a lot of work on the ends of the spars and masts. My website talks about not shipping to Canada, but I will for members here. It only is for the outside world. Just bear in mind that shipping is around $40-50. With your full address I can quote it properly. I offer a combo kit which has the accessories. If nothing else I would recommend the 3-jaw chuck and the chisel set since they are designed for small lathes and small work pieces. Hope this helps and let me know if I can help. I owned the lathe before I became a dealer and have used it for years. John
  6. Mike, sorry for delay in answers to your questions as I just read them. I don't get here as often as I should. The paint is Rustoleum from Walmart and it is a spray. I bought the yellow, blue and white colors. Word of caution is to spray many light coats to keep it from building up and giving a crackle finish. The Wood Glue PVA Sig Bond Glue is what I used (Hobby Lobby) as well as Testor's Green Cement and a CA glue. Hope this helps. PM me or use the contact page on my website for a faster response. Looking good - keep up the good work. John
  7. Hello Mike, welcome to the "club". I just finished my whaleboat a few days ago. It's really a fun project. Looks like you're off to a good start. I have tons of information on this subject, much of which is on my website. Feel free to check it out and be sure and ask questions if needed. I built mine with the sails up and rigged as a Spritsail w/Jib Beetle boat. Have fun, let me know if I can help. 8. Looking great Bruce, keep it up and enjoy the new toys! Finished mine a year ago today.....sure doesn't seem like it. Looks like I've finished my 1/16" Whaleboat on the 1 year anniversary of finishing my Morgan....strange coincidence. John
  9. You made a good choice, for most shipwork it does very well. Sorry I didn't get a chance to bid it. John
  10. Welcome back to our crazy world. I have studied many different kits, and I believe if I were to build this model I would choose the Model Shipways Constitution. Depending on your skills you can really build a very nice replication of this famous ship. There is also a lot of help available on this site. As for tools, I'm a bit prejudiced as I am a Proxxon Dealer. I truly believe no matter what brand that the DB-250 Lathe and accessories is a must for ship building. I offer a combo deal on my website for the small wood lathe and all accessories. Not trying to sell - just advising. PM me for more information or check the website. 11. Hello Art, I just saw your post - sorry - haven't been here in a while. thanks for the kind words about my Morgan. I am at the masting stage on my New Bedford Whaleboat by MS. You can visit it at my Build Log of the Morgan on my website under: "Whaleboat Build Log by John Fleming" page. Did you ever start a log? John
  12. Hi Tim, I just saw the post and thought I would comment. I am a member and sponsor of MSW as a Proxxon Dealer. Mill choices seem to be made depending on the required work one expects to do with it. The Sherline are excellent tools but pricey. I've had both Sherline and Proxxon lathes and mills in the past and there are more accessories available through Sherline. I've found that the Proxxon MF-70 could do everything I needed without spending so much for many tools I didn't need. Being a Proxxon Dealer with many MSW members as clients, perhaps you could give me a chance to quote your tool needs. PM me with a list. If not, either tool would be an excellent choice. John
  13. Thanks BE, good to see you aboard. Hope all is well on the other side of the pond. Thanks for your comments and kind words. Yep, another project knocked off the Bucket List. John
  14. Hi guys, I just wanted to post an update for any one who might be interested. Even though I am still working on downsizing and liquidating my collectibles, which as of 9-8-2016 are still available, I still have the urge to build something. I have had the kit for the New Bedford Whaleboat by Model Shipways for a while now, and I have decided to go ahead and build it too. I have started another Build Log page on my website to document it's construction. I probably should have done this prior to building the whaleboats for the Morgan so I would have had a better understanding and appreciation for what these little boats meant to a whaler. I wasn't sure I was going to even attempt building this especially after making 7 boats for the Morgan and when finished with them I was burned out with the duplication. The model can also travel with me and I can build it in my 5th Wheel much easier than a full size scale ship model. To go to the log use the link below and maneuver around to the page: "Build Log -A- My Whaleboat". I'm doing this build on my website to complement it and not wanting to duplicate it here as there are already several great build logs. Anyone wishing to follow my whaleboat build please use the below link. Hope all is well with everyone, John Link: http://www.charleswmorganmodel.com/build-log---a---my-whaleboat.html
  15. Hi guys, I served on the Kennedy from 69-72 EM3, E Div #3 Engine Room. I looked for years for a model and never found one, even tried to convert the Tamiya Enterprise, but never finished it. There is a Chinese company unfortunately that makes one now in 1:350 scale. You might also be able to convert a 1:350 Nimitz since they are kinda...sisters..sort of.
  16. Hi Wayne, sounds like a great project. I highly recommend weebly.com as a easy to use, user friendly, website creator, name, host and all of the instructions for website creation. It is a free site, and if you purchase your domain name from them, they will still host your website for free. The only time you would pay for the hosting, is if you do an eCommerce site where you sell something. My CW Morgan site is free and I did it all myself and I knew nothing when I started out. John
  17. Thanks Darrell, I'm glad they could be of assistance. That's why I posted them, to benefit anyone building the model. John
  18. Hello Ohio, welcome back to the Niagara Club. Good job repairing damage - can't tell. Should you need any photos of the Niagara in Erie, I have an entire page with 3-400 pictures of the Niagara on my website in the Gallery Section: US Brig Niagara. Check it out if you need pictures - they are taken from a modelers "eye" and mostly the rigging and deck structures. This will probably be my next build if I should chose to build another one. Here's the link: http://www.charleswmorganmodel.com I'll be following along John
  19. My opinion is that if you aren't turning a 3" D carbon steel stock, then you should have no power problems with the Sherline, just don't get in too big a hurry - you can stop any lathe doing that. Go for it - like someone said earlier - you deserve it.... John
  20. Hi Mike, sorry to hear about your electronics and electric. After the 7" 2 weeks ago I put the Ferrari up on 4 concrete 4" concrete blocks to keep water from getting in it. It got within 1/2" last time. Lake level has dropped 18" today so it's back below the bulkheads. We still have 2' to go yet. Niagara is looking good. John
  21. Hi Mike, got 6" in the garage twice again - that makes 13 times in 12 months and 5 times since March. Lake is at the edge of the house. How's your's? We are now at the highest Lake level since 94 - this is the 2nd highest this lake has ever been. Only good thing about this flood is we didn't lose electricity. Did you lose your power with the lightning? Glad you guys didn't get hurt with yours. My Davis weather monitor registered 9.89" in 24 hours. Lake was showing 3.5' above normal and was 1.6' above my bulkhead & boat lift. Hope all is ok, John
  22. I agree with Mark, I have used a DRO on both the Sherline Lathe and the Mill. Much easier than having to stop and use calipers to check. I found it to be extremely accurate and easy to use.
  23. I'm an "Old Salt", I guess. As much as I hated what I was doing, where I was at and where I lived, that old gray ship (USS JF Kennedy CVA 67) aircraft carrier and the people, and experience, upon reflection, were the best days of my life. Therefore, I couldn't be happier to see her becoming a museum, and like others have said, it's not our generation or the current generation to understand, but future generation a hundred years or more to see what Navy preceded them. As someone recently said about ships, "that back "then" there were wooden ships and Iron Men, now we've become iron ships with wooden men soon to be iron ships with no men". May our history survive for future generations to learn from. To me that is only by preservation of our heritage....except model ships. John
  24. See Mike, all that fretting about plank counts and layouts mostly either get covered with filler or paint. Bottom line is a nice smooth hull. Painting the top or coppering the bottom - choices. do you plan to copper the hull or just paint it? You're getting there. John
