My apologies for being so far behind on my posts.  I get so little time to work on the model that I forget to add my updates.  I’ve made some pretty good progress as of late and have found myself getting prepped to make the first set of guns.  I’ve decided to roll the barrels myself.  A royal PITA, but a good learning experience.

I had goofed up some material on my model build. So I contacted John Garcia at Model Expo to get some replacement material.
I offered to pay for it and the shipping but he said it wasn't necessary nor did he ask for proof of purchase.
    Thanks John.
Model Expo is the best in my book.

When you receive the kit, can you give us some of the history?
Fentens advertises it as a Polish machine, named Bulgar, sometimes it is referred to as a German machine, but the pics in the internet suggest that it is a Bulgarian one (build in Poland, nicknamed 'Mother Bear')

stanwill reacted to Jake in A newbie...... And yet, not exactly a newbie
    Hello,

My name is David, but I go by Jake. I am a 60 yr old man, who has been modeling since I was 5 yrs old. My father was a avid Modeler, from before I was born, right through untill he passed away, a couple of yrs ago.

My father was a person who... Didn't fuss with a model for weeks, he was a... Proflic Modeler. He was a carrer military man, and when I was 5 or 6, while stationed in Okinawa, and shipped literally 200 + models back home.

I am a newbie to wooden ship models... But have spent a lot of time while working on models, doing scratch-building, and super detailing.

I am retired, but spent my professional carrier in the computer industry, the last 1/2 as a systems engineer... So I am used to... Problem solving, and attention to detail.

A little while ago, someone gifted me the Model shipways Niagara model. I did a bunch of research, bought some tools, & books (I am impressed with Mastini's Ship Modeling Simplified book).

While this was a great gift, it was not the wooden ship model I really wanted to build... You see, my grandfather actually worked on one of the restorations of the constitution (I have built Revell's 1/96 model of it).

I have, for yrs, wanted to build this ship in wood. When it was first announced, I read about the Model Shipways Constitution model, in Finescale Modelers Magazine . I never got it, but always wanted it. I decided, before I start the Niagara, I would see about getting the Ms Constitution kit. Two weeks ago, I won a complete Ms Constitution kit, on ebay, for $225.00 (a great deal, I believe).

So, while this is my 1st wooden ship... Making me a newbie .. And I know many people start model projects, and get frustrated, and walk away... I am thinking, hoping... My 50 + yrs of modeling experience, along with my... Professional life experience of... Problem solving, and attention to detail, coupled with my motivation of completing this particular kit, to pass down to my son, to hopefully pass on to future generations, will give me a... Better then average chance of completing this kit.

    Jake

While visiting Broken Hill - in the far west of NSW - recently, we came across this memorial to the bandsmen of the Titanic. I thought it was an unusual place to find a memorial to a ship that sank on the other side of the world, especially as Broken Hill is several hundred kilometres from the nearest large body of water, but it turns out that brass bands were especially popular in the town in the years before the First World War and when news of the disaster reached 'The Hill' the townsmen thought it an appropriate place to erect a monument to the Titanic's brave bandsmen.

Of the six great British luxury four-stackers at sea, or building, in 1912, fully half will have sunk within four years - Titanic in 1912, Britannic in 1916, and Lusitania in 1915. The three survivors were Olympic, Mauritania and Aquitania.

Chesapeake working boats are wonderful. There is something so simple and honest about them, they were built by watermen with no specific tools nor plans but just an idea and shape passed down through generations. here is a great documentary on the building of a Chesapeake bay deadrise. if you have not seen it before I highly recommend it.

    Yours sincerely.

    Thanks Patric and Tom!

Now that I have gathered experience of ship model building about a month, I have to say that this is really nice hobby.
So was car and tank building too, but I think this is better.

And Tom, when I was nearing my retirement years, I purchased so many tools and machines I could, because I knew that after retirement there is no more money to spend on them.
I have been making models almost my entire life, so I knew that this is going to continue also on retirement. After all you must have hobbies when you have nothing more than free time. Without them life is going to be very boring.
