I think the Surprise would be a great choice

Whilst continuing to develop this nice little Baltimore privateer schooner, I am thinking of what else to do in 2023. As I have Indy, I am almost compelled to develop a Patrick O’Brian vessel from the Aubrey & Maturin series, HMS Surprise (much smaller than Indy), complete with Aubrey & Maturin figures. I am not sure, what you guys think?

OK, HMS Surprise, the Jack Aubrey HMS Surprise, with the 9 pounders and 36 gun frigate main mast is a definite for next year.

Hey Chuck: It is sure nice to see a finished product... and that there is a finish line somewhere out there.

I do have one question.. is there any thought about anchors coming from Syren or is that a DIY project? Was just curious. I think it would be a great DIY project

    Thanks

Chuck: Good point with comparing to what is on a dockyard model. Thanks for the reply. I will have to give it some thought on whether or not to add anchors.

I may also add a flag on the stern.. may need to check into that a bit more.

Finished up making all the frames, now to double them up install the bolts and filler pieces between the frames along with spacers to keep them at the right distance apart, then sanding, sanding and more sanding.

I will have an update here by weekend.

Prepping and painting the hull has taken an inordinate amount of time for me, and I want it under poly varnish before I post my WIP.

Just a couple days or so now.

Preparation of the Poop deck. The original poop deck in the kit (Session #5), did not fit at all. Tom of CAF Model sent me a replacement part that is better but will require some adjustments as we will see.

The replacement part came in one single and enormous part. Because of the negative curve on the top of the hull, it is not possible to insert it directly. My first job was to cut it into two symmetrical parts (picture above). Then patiently, I adjusted each side to fit in the best possible way.

All these attempts make me think that there are probably very few (if not none) modelers who have reached that stage in the construction of that kit.

The front view of the upper deck, clearly shows that it is missing one beam, not provided in the kit. I will be offering a solution soon.

The rear need to be reworked extensively to accept the rounded ceiling, above the rear balcony.

Finally, an overall view of the model, showing that most details are now completely occult-ed:

    Cheers Guys,

As it happens in the past week, I have received my printed pictorial build album.
I have done one of these for all my builds, it is a shame not to use all those build photos and record those internal details lost from view.

A few pages to give a flavour.

I didnt have any plans to make those for the Winnie.   Strictly speaking in terms of following a typical contemporary model.  No rope and no anchors or rigged guns etc.  But yes all of that can be added to make each of your own models unique.   Except for a possibly ships barge this project is completed.  As an homage to those contemporary models....like this one.

If waiting for a new part is going to be lengthy why dont you use the broken part as a template and draw it on the remaining wood on the sheet. then using a table saw, or a hand saw, cut it out of the sheet and then sand it to the shape you need... there is nothing worse than waiting for replacement parts. I have had to do that a few times.. more for parts that went missing (wheels off a gun carriage that disappear into a carpet).

I keep hoping that one day the Publisher Ancre puts out a monograph of the real-life HMS Surprise, as she was originally the French Corvette L'Unite. I believe it would be as popular for them as the Bonnie Richard was.

All the bowsprit chains and forestays finished. What's left are the 3 set of stays on the whisker pole (still to be attached) and all the outhauls and downhauls for the jib sails.

I decided to do the garboard band on the port side before moving over to the starboard side.

I am a little concerned about the stern. Measured at the stern post I have 2 1/8" to cover but at the bulkhead 29 it is 1 5/8".

2 1/8" is more than can be covered by 6 5/16" wide planks. So I need at least one 3/8" plank (probably two).

Narrowing down to 1 5/8" in less a 3/4" inch (on average, it is 1 inch at the bottom (top) and 1/2" at the top (bottom). Might make for some pretty strange looking planks.

Might be time for a stealer. But before that I will see what I can come up with for a 3/8" wide plank.

I have time, need to get the starboard side in the same shape as the port side.
