Thanks Jan V.,Mike,& Ulises .I also have the Corel kit & hope to do a better job on it as more info on the structure & rigging comes available.

FINISHED! I decided to add a stern lantern to finish it off. There are still a number of errors but I am fairly satisfied how it came out. I want to thank everyone for all the loos & likes during the build. The problem now is where to put it - it`s almost 4 ft long. An even bigger problem is deciding what to build next I will try to put a few more pics in the gallery. /Mark

Thanks Frank - no I do not have the book. Either a copy or sketch would be fine. I may get the rigging book by Fred at the museum when it comes out later in the year. /Mark

Hello Frank Do you happen to know how those davits are rigged to lift the anchor? I remember seeing a picture somewhere but can`t recall where. /Mark

Karl - no sails. I find it very difficult to get them to look right.I might attempt some furled sails on my next build. Thanks also to you & Janos for your nice comments.

A little more progress - all yards mounted. just a few more lines left like braces, anchors, flags,& a few misc.items.note the hooks & rings on the lower end of the mizzen lateen yard - I think this is correct. That light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter........... /Mark

Looks good - I also have these davits made but am waiting until the rest of the ship is almost done - ropes & other things seem to get caught on anything sticking out the sides of the ship. /Mark

Hello all. another little update - fore & main yards mounted & rigged except for the braces - they will be last. Tried to get pictures with a dark background so the light rigging shows up better. The running rigging is a little too light colored but I am not going to re-do it. /Mark

Hello everyone! Thanks for all the nice comments & likes.I don`t know if the rigging is 100% correct but it is the best I can make out after looking at all the photos I could find - mostly Clayton`s. Lin Feng - I believe I lost a bunch of pictures due to a glitch in the MSW system & can`t re-load them since I didn`t save them. I actually bought new chainplates made by Amati from Ages of Sail & slightly modified them. If you are interested the Amati part numbers are 4092/07 & 4092/05. /Mark

Thanks Ulises. By the way I copied your jig for making rope coils - hope you don`t mind . /Mark

Hello all.I managed to finish the bowsprit rigging - resembles a spider web. Would be much easier if I had 3 hands. /Mark

Ulises - that was me. my kit had walnut & boxwood planking for the second layer of planking but there wasn`t enough of the boxwood to do even one side.As I recall the boxwood was supposed to be used between the whales.I had enough of the lime to do the first layer of planking.

One more thing about Mamoli - be sure and inventory the kit. Every Mamoli kit I have done was short either wood or metal parts. /Mark

Kurt Van Dahm is building the kit for Ships in Scale magazine. I believe he is a member of this forum. You might try and contact him. /Mark -
I remember filing down the metal frames & finish the outer hull before mounting the gun barrels. I`m sure that with my skills I would have knocked every gun barrel out while fairing the hull. If I was to do it again I would throw away the metal frames & use a U- channel for all the dummy barrels like the Corel system. Just my opinion, however what some people find difficult others find easy. /Mark

Thanks again Michael. I am currently trying to decide whether to forge ahead with the rigging or set this ship aside & wait for the book.I`m thinking it may be close to Christmas before the book is out. Like I said before there are so many little errors in the build that a line or two out of place won`t make much difference . I do have the Corel version I could work on although the thought of building two Vasa`s in a row may make me crazy .I have been to the Vasa sight & Clayton`s site numerous times & think I have most of the rigging figured out.Clayton used the most recent info of the rigging from Fred at the museum so it should be fairly accurate. /Mark

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
