  1. Hello Scott, and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. John
  2. Jeff, spending the rest of your life tying little knots is one of the joys of rigging a large sailing ship! Actually, clove hitches are very quick and easy to tie and will help your model to look really authentic. Tension on the shrouds shouldn't be a problem as the ratlines are slightly slack and don't pull on the shrouds. John
  3. That photo was taken from one of the boats. The ship isn't moving very fast in the light breeze and if you look closely, you can see a line leading back from the whisker boom - no doubt a painter to make sure the boat didn't get left behind. John
  4. G'day Doc, and a warm welcome from 'Down Under'. John
  5. Bruma, this link to a photo of the 'Cutty Sark' taken in Sydney during her working days may be of use to you. It's from a glass plate negative, so is very fine grained and can be enlarged quite a bit. John State Library Victoria - CUTTY SARK (slv.vic.gov.au)
  6. Coming along beautifully, Keith. I think I like the idea of slicing off those hex. nuts. John
  7. Hello, and a warm welcome to MSW from 'Down Under'. John
  8. What a fascinating hull. I'm sure you'll be able to complete it into a very nice sloop. John
  9. Hello Hugo, and a warm welcome to the fourm from down under. What a treasure you have there - a model built by your grandfather. How far you go is, of course, entirely up to you, but if it were mine I'd do as little as possible to it. A good (but gentle) clean to remove the dust and accumulated grime is the obvious first step. Once she's clean you can sit back and reassess the situation. The sails have obviously had a hard life, but they add character and age to the model. If you do finally decide to replace them, you'll need to find cloth that looks the age of the model so they don't stand out 'like a sore thumb'. John
  10. Haven't visited your log for a while and I've certainly missed out on seeing a lot of development on your beautiful model. Your doing a superb job on all that deatail. john
  11. Hello Martin, and a warm welcome to MSW from 'Down Under'. John
  12. A warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. That's a pretty complex project for your first build, but if you take it nice and easy you should do just fine. John
  13. Good to hear you're still hanging in there, mate. John
  14. A very stressful time over and a beautiful hull ready for finishing - great stuff! John
  15. Nice to see the lighthouse is still there, Popeye! John
  16. Hello 'Flying Fish', and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. That's a very nice looking model you have there. John
  17. Tim, by the 1860's iron was a common material in ship construction. By that time some ships were being built on full iron frames - such as the Cutty Sark. John
