It has to do with a chemical reaction of the rust/vinegar with the tannin in the wood. I have used this on pine to give an aged look. With pine you need to paint it with tea first to add the tannin. I guess the walnut has enough tannin already. An easier way to make the rust/vinegar is with steel wool, the rustier (darker) the better. Bob

Ya, Popeye. I sure wouldn't want to t be like you. Hope your NOT move wasn't too disturbing and you get to build soon. Bob

Still wondering about which to buy? In industry we were told, "Buy 25% more capacity than you think you will need and you will find you use it all." It's always bad to buy a machine and find out it won't do quite enough. Bob

John: Guy may know better but the best I can tell there was no anti fouling paint. Michael: At present I am looking at the Lettie G Howard. It’s a fishing schooner that was altered at least three times. I want to build it as it was originally. Tom: There’s not much inside. The mahogany you see is the window trim on the other side. I only wish I could match your skill. Piet: Yes, back to building the rest, mostly the railings. Bob

I do not have the mill only the X-Y table. I know nothing about the Z axis but the X-Y only has about 5 degrees turn befor the table moves. Bob

With every boat I build, there comes a time, when the hull and deck are finished and I’m starting on the cabin and deck furniture. At that time I start thinking of the next build. The new boat takes over and consumes all my free time. I get the plans and start doing the research and all work on the present build stops. But after a while the new boat slowly moves into the background and I know I have to finish the present build before I start the new or I would never finish any of my builds. That’s where I am on the Hoga. Now to get back to building. Here are the latest pictures. Bob

The gibbs on the X-Y are adjustable, like ane good machine should be. As for the handles to move the table you have to turn it a few degrees before the table moves but I see that on expensive machines too. Bob

Do you mean to tell me the boy at the museum was right in asking if you were doing it right? John, if the Stag was not right I’ll accept not being right any day. Bob

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
