Tigerdvr reacted to reklein in Recommended paint pens for detail work?
My grown daughter paints rocks and Posca Brand paint pens are the preferred brand in that hobby. They give a nice sharp fine line. They are then sealed with a clear coat to stand outside weather which probably won't be needed for interior work. I would give wood a clear coat seal before any fine line painting is done.

Looking good Rich. May I suggest considering breaking the edges on your long boat tiller.
Holding on to the tiller with sharp edges would really be a chore for coxswain(?).

Tigerdvr reacted to Geoff Matson in New way to mount your mast
I am getting close to installing the foremast. I was often confused about whether to clue it or leave it loose and let the rigging keep it in place. I know if I glue it, I will break it and be screwed. If I just set it in the mast hole and let the rigging hold it in place, it will twist, and I will be screwed. I came upon another method that I am going to use. It is a product called Quick-Stix remove-able wax. I purchased it on Amazon for $5.00 .My wife has a friend who builds miniature doll houses and uses it all the time. It is a soft wax that sticks to what it is applied too. It holds the item firm in place. If you need to remove it, ok. If you need to tweak it, ok. I feel it will be great on the masts and bowsprit. Just put a little ball of the wax on the bottom of the mast and stick it in place. It will hold them in place, while the rigging is done. If you have an accident, you can remove it. You could use it in many instances while modeling.

Tigerdvr reacted to RussR in Hermione by MESSIS - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - 1/89
Great job. Your self discipline has payed off.
This kit is a welcome change from the normal kit. Some like the natural wood finished ship without sails. This kit has the full package for me. It sands out from the rest. And that is what motivates me to continue. (not to say others are wrong)
You are correct.
I work on my Hermione everyday. Even if only for an hour a day.
What is your next project? Or will you be taking a break?

Tigerdvr reacted to AON in 9 Pound Naval Cannon 1786 by AON - FINISHED - 1:12 scale
The third pieces to make were the HIND and FORE TRUCKS (or wheels). These were also made of maple dowels of diameters just larger than required and sanded down on the lathe. I sanded down a length adequate for two trucks, then scored the proper widths leaving a 1/4" gap between each truck. I drilled the axle hole through on the drill press, and lastly cut between the 1/4" gap with my band saw. The individual trucks were then sanded to the score marks.
I chose to make my TRUCKS in one piece as I understand the bolted two layer/four piece sandwiched Truck with grains running at 90° was a feature that followed at a later time. I did not use metal trucks as they were never used on the wooden decks of ships since they would cause too much damage to the deck.

Tigerdvr reacted to AON in 9 Pound Naval Cannon 1786 by AON - FINISHED - 1:12 scale
While waiting for the 3D printing course I decided to build the carriage assembly. The first thing was to select wood material. The real carriages were originally made of elm and later this changed to be oak. As a scaled down version the normal choice would be something with a tighter grain. Since the wood was getting painted it really didn't matter what I used but the song "Hearts of Oak" came to mind so I decided to use oak. I have old oak shipping planks that needed to be cut down to near size on the table saw and then sanded to thickness.
The first items made were the two piece BRACKETS or CHEEKS. I've found them called by both names. The pattern was transferred from the plan to the wood using carbon paper and a pencil. I decided to soften the edges by rubbing them with fine sand paper. This was done to all pieces I made for the carriage. Although initially cut square, the axle tree and gun barrel trunnion pockets needed to be filed at a very slight angle because the brackets are set at 7°.

Tigerdvr reacted to JohnB40 in USF Confederacy 1778 by JohnB40 - Model Shipways - 1:64 scale
The hull sheaves were then made. I laminated some thin scrap hardwood. When cured I used a hole punch to make simulated sheaves, these were trimmed to fit in the slots of the frames. They were then stained golden oak.
Once they are fitted to the hull I can start the planking........

Tigerdvr reacted to Jack12477 in The Sullivans DD-537 by Jack12477 - FINISHED - Trumpeter - 1:350 - PLASTIC
Chris, there were 2 kits purchased at the same time including the PE Brass so I didn't break everything down cost wise. The Sullivans kit was 25.73 and the John S Brown Liberty ship (also 1:350 Trumpeter) was $38.72 from HobbyLinc, total for 2 kits with tax and shipping $74. The brass PE for both ships totaled $63 from MegaHobbies, tax and shipping included. The Hold/Fold tool, Black acrylic mat, and extra bending tool totaled $99.87 from The Small Shop (Oregon ??) tax and shipping included. So for two kits, including PE it was about $137 for both kits. The extra tools were a "wanna-have" extra.
To answer the second part of your question: I've been modelling plastic for probably 50-60 years off and on, mostly in 1:35 scale Tamiya armor, fully camouflaged/weathered using an airbrush free hand (no masking), and super-detailed using a variety of stuff. Also did a lot of N-scale model railroading models in plastic, wood and a little card-stock. If you remember the Hubley & Gabriel metal car/truck kits, I also did a bunch of them.
My Dad was a huge model railroading fan, started with Lionel right after the war (that's WWII ) , then S-scale when it was introduced, skipped over TT-scale, and went to HO scale, built most of his HO rolling stock from Athern (and others) kits; he and I built some of his rolling stock cars together, so it's sort of in my blood.
Shep Paine's books and FineScale Modeler magazine provided a lot of modeling references for the Tamiya armor models. (Before I found MSW ) - I have close to 40 some-odd Tamiya 1:35 scale armor models, including a couple of unopened kits.
But this is my first excursion into PE Brass detailing. Watching the builds of RGL, COG, Semourbutts, et al, peeked my interest into trying PE myself. Another reason is that I am running out of room for the larger wood ship models and need to do something a little smaller in overall size. I still have 4 wood kits on the shelf waiting for me to open them.
Someone starting out could easily built these two ships out of the box without the PE add-ons and still get a lot of experience and satisfaction and not break the "piggy-bank".

Tigerdvr reacted to Kurt Johnson in Tools, tools and more tools....
Dave, There’s always something you gotta have “and my life will be complete”. You get it and never get around to using it. Those catalogues.... It always gets me fantasizing. MicroMark is good (fantastic service, good quality stuff.) Stay away at all costs from Lee Valley, its the road to degradation.

Tigerdvr reacted to CPDDET in Tools, tools and more tools....
Just received my first MicroMark catalog. Holy smokes!!
This reminds me of when I first became a boat owner and later when I first became a RV owner. West Marine and Camping world sold more gadgets, do-dads, thing-a-ma-jigs and what-ja-ma-call-its than one could use in 3 lifetimes. As a dyed in the wool tool addict this type of paraphernalia is dangerous to be within a country mile of the house.
This newbie will be seeking the advice of you more experienced builders about which contraptions are worth having before I dish out any of my hard earned moola.

Seems I read somewhere that linoleum was removed because of the fire hazard, a big concern on any ship.
