Yes I thought about that too. The reason I tried the paint is because i noticed my cup of water I rinse my paint brushes in had a faint tint to it like a wash when weathering wood. I used this method when weathering my sails on my Scottish Maid build and it worked very well. It is more like a very lightly tinted water than paint when it is this watered down. Since I had to mix the 50/50 water & glue anyway I used this paint tinted water. Still playing with it though. Jesse

Sailor I really don't know yet. I don't have much money for kits and running out of space for large models. Been thinking about doing some Ship-in-bottles again. Denis, been Experimenting. Have no idea what kind of cloth this is, something I have saved for things like this. I mixed white glue and water with a drop of tan and black acrylic paint to give it a dingy look. Rolled it up after coating it with the glue mixture. When it dried enough I cut a few pieces out and folded them over. (Sorry for the horrible focus on that picture) I tried them in the hammock crane netting. I've seen them turned both ways online, tried fitting them both ways. Would like from feedback. What do they look like? Are they too big? Stick up too far? What should I try different? Jesse

Thank you Gary, Tom, John, Steve, Carl, Scott, Zappto, Denis, Dave & Dave for the feedback on the netting. Yes Carl, we are our own worst critics. I still don't completely like what I see but it shows up pretty good with the camera. Popeye, I hadn't thought about the rolled up hammocks. I don't know much about them. Haven't found much info on them yet but you have sparked my curiosity. Thank you Dirk,it is an honor to be complimented by someone of your skill level. Piet, always good to hear from you my friend. I guess by the time all that other rigging is on no one will notice the thicker size of those two ropes. Jeff, yes 2017 was a tough year. I think I was down more than I was well enough to do much work all year. I pray this year will be better. Denis, still thinking about the rolled up hammocks. I must not be searching right, cant find enough on them to see what they are supposed to look like and how to do them. Jesse

Bowsprit, Jibboom & Flying Jibboom all assembled and glued into place. Figurehead glued on. Could not get a good close-up shot of it like I wanted. This is the part of the build where I have to be extra careful because I always bump, snag and break things that stick out. I actually delayed this step until now for this very reason. Jesse

Attached the hearts. This seemed to take up more room than the pictures and instructions show. It was like I made the ropes for the hearts too thick but I didn't want to tear it all up and start over. I'm going with what I got but wish it all fit more snug like the pictures and diagrams show. Jesse

Tried to use the open hearts supplied with the kit but every one broke or split. I cut out my own from wood disks from Hobby Lobby. Theses are very thin layered wood disks so they had the strength not to break. Got the open & closed hearts ready to add onto the Bowsprit. Jesse

Got the hammock netting installed. Didn't turn out as good as I would like. My camera doesn't capture the details I can see. I would suggest if anyone ties the netting to the rope edging use a much finer thread. Mine had too large of knots everywhere I tied one. Most of it is hidden though. Went on and tied the longboat on. was worried it would be in the way of trying to tie to the pin rails but then thought that it might be just as hard to tie it down later too. Jesse

Making the netting. Taped a section of it down flat. I cut out a guide from a sheet of paper. This took several tries until I got it that fits in the cranes the same size of the netting. Once this was checked, double checked and triple checked I used the paper as a size guide for the netting. I laid it down over the taped down netting and carefully stretched thread along the edges of the paper guide taping the ends of the thread down. (Somehow missed getting a shot of this step) When I had all 4 thread sides in place I used something called Fray Check I picked up in the sewing section at Walmart. to hold the thread in place. This made a little bit of semi-clear places along the edges but thats ok. After cutting out and tying the netting all around alcohol was used to dissolve the Fray check and remove that stuff out of the netting holes. This all took me much longer to do than I expected. I touched up some edges with CA glue where the netting looked pulled away form the rope. I realized too late that I probably used one size too large threading for this net siding but I'm gonna let it go like it is and be ok with it. Jesse

Making a little progress. Made the boarding panels, hammock cranes and boards. Cut a strip of card stock paper and marked the spacing for them off of the instruction sheets. I have had to re-glue these many times as I keep bumping and snagging them. I wonder how much of a problem I'm going to have with these as the build continues. Jesse

Dave, I'm not sure. This is how close the instructions show them. If I remember right this was discussed some on Dirks and several other Syren builds. Don't remember the details of the discussion but everyone agrees that everything is very close together here. Jesse

Jim, I really don't know. Dirk has done research on things like this on his builds like the correct rigging for the ships wheel and rudder. I tried to look this up myself but didn't find what I was looking for so I trusted Dirks research into it and copied him. The kit instructions do not show them. Maybe some others could shed some light on this and teach some of us about this? Jesse

I'm looking at areas that i know I will have trouble reaching into later when masts, rigging, etc. are in place. Looking at Dirks build I went on and did the anchor ropes on deck now. I found this a little difficult to do.Making sure everything attached at just the right place wasn't that easy for me. For ropes that need serving I'm using a homemade machine. I was talking to a friend of mine about wanting to get Chuck's. He wanted something to do so he went and made this. Not really what i wanted but it works. For someone who doesn't really understand serving or anything in miniature he actually did pretty good. It is a little rickety but it will do for now until I get a better one. Jesse

Noticed that I hadn't done the rudder chains. Started to do it like the instructions say but after reading what Dubz says about this I did it the way he did. Jesse

It's been a while again but I look at it as I have a permanent Dr.'s note! Progress on the tops. Made the rails. Began tapering/shaping the top masts. This is how I mark pieces that are eight sided like these are in places. Shows me exactly where the edges need to be. I started out scraping them with a razor blade. Just getting this far causes me to have excruciating pain throughout my body especially in my back and shoulders. I intended to keep going a bit longer but our cat Izzy decided she wasn't going to let me. She got right on my lap and would not stay down and out my way so we retired to my chair for the evening. More to come soon, Jesse

I didn't have much choice. Kits are not cheap. A poor man has to build it from scratch. Actually started carving small ships from scratch when I was a teenager. I did buy one kit in my early 20's to learn planking but most of my life I had to make them myself. The last 2 kits were gifts. This one is about half the kit and half scratch. Jesse

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
