  1. In a little conflict about the belaying pins. Would prefer to have wood ones but It would take so long to try to turn all of them. The brass ones are all uniform and the same so I'm trying painting them with one thin coat of Testors Wood color then 1 thin coat of flat tan over that. I will see if this works ok seeing how most of them will be covered up with the rigging tie-offs and coils. If it does not work I will try to turn them from toothpicks or something. The brass ones will have the most strength. I'm making sure the anything secured to the deck (especially where there will be additional pull or pressure from rigging being tied off has metal pins underneath for additional security. Overhead look at the progress so far... Jesse
  2. Not real familiar with it all yet Michael, most of my life I never had a lathe or even worked on one. Need to learn more. Galley Stack construction....
  3. Having some problems with the last 2 pics, will get them up as soon as they load right. Jesse
  4. Turned the fife rail stanchions on the mini lathe. Made a pattern to go by out of scrap metal strips using grinding tips with the Dremel tool and mini files. I had a lot of trouble with the kit supplied wood for the rail. It kept splitting and breaking even after gluing layers together, so I made my own out of wood sticks I had laying around. I have no clue as to what kind of wood it is but this one is much better. Jesse
  5. I am now adding the deck fittings I had pre-made earlier in the build. Beginning to build the rest of them that had not already been done. Jesse
  6. Still slowly plugging away at it. On top of everything else I have had some other health issues lately. Thought there might be some colon cancer but everything came out clear. Been difficult to get much work done in the shipyard. Got the tackle rigging for the sleds all hooked on. Found it difficult to do this. Found that a tiny bit of CA glue on each hook kept things in place (they kept on unhooking themselves when I would try to hook the one beside it on). I pulled the slack out of each line and painted them with watered down white glue to prevent the lines from loosening up. As for the coils I decided to go with the basic ones like Chuck shows in the instruction book because the other way is to complicated for me now with my limitations due to my health condition. I used a plastic bracelet that the kids like that glows when they first use them. The plastic tube that connects it is taken off so it straightens out. I wrap the line around it and brush watered down glue. It is just the right size for shaping the coils. (My wife fusses at me for saving every piece of junk like this but I always find a use for it!) None of them are glued in place on the deck yet. Jesse
  7. What are the pieces you have clamped to the bulkheads to square them up? Where does one get these? Jesse
  8. I saw that somewhere recently. Not sure if I will do them that neatly or just a simple coil like Chucks instructions show. The nicely round rolled ones look impressive. I still feel pretty rotten but I am forcing myself back into it. Been working on those block tackles for weeks now. Buck, He serves as a warning to anyone who might want to pillage my workbench! I should make one of those cages they used to hang dead Pirates in for it. Jesse
  9. Got all the blocks pre-rigged. Will start adding them to the carronades soon. Wondering about making the rope coils for each one. Seems simple enough but I know it will be harder for me than it used to be. Jesse
  10. Not much to report. Running thread through blocks for the carronade rigging. Seems it will take forever. I'm usually a Bible quoter but ran across this online the other day "It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop" - Confucious Jesse
  11. Hello Blain. My Syren build has slowed down a lot due to heath reasons so I will be following some of you others starting this build. I had the same issue with the bulwarks not lining up with the side templates. The only thing I could figure is that maybe they show the side view as seen by the eye on a flat sheet but not actually laid out along the ships actual curve? Never did quite understand it. Had to go by the top deck template. Jesse
  12. Hi David, I am disabled too. I have Chronic Lyme which has given me nerve damage, impaired motor skills, cognitive problems, etc., etc., so I understand the difficulties you are dealing with. I find that even though it is much harder for us model ship building is great therapy, helps train your hands and mind to do things it wants to not be able to do anymore. I too am building the Syren. Mine came with the less than desirable wood parts too. My kit was a gift from someone else so I didn't try to get replacements from them. I have had to remake some parts myself as I go along. Hope they replace what you need them to. Mine had a lot of laser char too. Some parts chipped/split on the edges when trying to cut them out. I will be following along too! Jesse
  13. My health has declined in the last 6 months Haven't been able to do much at all. Have started to rig the breech lines on the carronades. This kind of work is much more difficult for me now than it was just last year. I see that things will be going much slower for me so there will be longer periods of time between updates but I'll be doing what I can when I can. Not much to show but it's a start. One of our pets keeping close by for some comfort. Jesse
