Tied all the clove hitches and got the futtock staves tied on. Now working on the sister blocks and cleats. Somewhere earlier in the log I showed how I was making my own cleats. When I got to this stage I realized that I only had half the amount of cleats than what I will need for both mats so I just ordered some from Syren Ship Model co. and shaped them up a little. They will be painted black when they are all secured on. Sorry about the clarity of the pictures. My camera does not do a good job focusing in on these tight places. Jesse

Thanks for all the comments and likes. It has been a while. Health condition is slowing me down. The hardest part is getting used to the fact that getting less done is probably going to be the new norm. I have started working on the topmast shrouds and ratlines. Very slow but plugging along! Jesse

Yes you are right Rich, the kit supplied wood is awful. I had to use other wood for many parts too, especially the fife rail. Jesse

The next day before starting all over I thought I would test an idea I've had but never tied. I have read in books how they spliced ropes together sometimes. This would be a good time to see if I can do this at this scale. I untwisted the strands of the other end of the shroud that had a lot extra still on the end that had not been cut off. Untwisted the cut side, spaced these two together to the correct length and re-twisted the rope together. Luckily this line naturally went right back in place very well. I painted it with watered down white glue and CA the spot at each end where the splicing ended. When the glue dried ans everything was trimmed up it was good as new. Jesse

It has been a while again. Health and wife....umm...I mean life, keeping from the workbench. I have been working on the Main and Fore Topmast Shrouds. Got 2 sets on the fore and while working on the main there were some kids in the house wanting to see trying to climb all over me and they made me accidentally cut the shroud right in the middle. Part of it was served, both deadeyes already tied on and I did not want to have to re-do all this. Very frustrated. Jesse

My prayers for you Rich. I struggle with Chronic Lyme and I know what you mean. Got another Dr. appointment this afternoon. There is something therapeutic about getting back to the work bench. Jesse

Dave, what kind of soldering iron and solder do you use? I have had very poor results trying to solder. I'm thinking I don't have the right kind. Jesse

Believe it or not, I've never had the opportunity to visit any of our Maritime Museums in NC (or anywhere else for that matter). I've always wanted to go. I guess i'm going to have to hire someone who is willing to drive a sick guy to a Museum sometime! I bet it was awesome! Jesse

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
