11 anni di modellismo d'arsenale
mtaylor replied to MICHELE PADOAN's topic in New member Introductions
Welcome to MSW. Your work is stunning. I hope you'll do a build log on your current project. -
My observation is.... get the kit you would love to build even Victory. Then after getting it, open and box. After realizing it's the deep end of the pool, put it in the closet and during the learning, take it down occasionally for motivation. The ModelExpo series seems like a good place to start or some of the others that have been mentioned like Vanguard Models. You're next step.... take the advice given about starting simple. The first kit I bought was Billings Vasa. Took one or too looks and put it up on the shelf and then started on a simple kit and went from there. After some simple models, I felt comfortable trying the Vasa. This was back before internet forums such as this so basically, I was on my own.

Very well done, and I empathize completely with your agonizing reappraisal of the ups and downs. You've learned a lot in a short period of time and that will carry you through the next project. For those of us following along, we've learned a few things also. It's all part of the journey and thanks for sharing yours.

Welcome to MSW, Giuseppe. When you do get your model and start it, do start a build log. It is a great way to get help when you need it and also to meet others.

I suspect you are on the right path with this. Hemp was used for the tillers and because of this'resulted in it being shot away and thus the need for the solid rod. There might have been some issue with use of iron rope like maybe it was too stiff.

Take a deep breath, Glen and maybe an adult beverage to calm the nerves. Very well done and looking super.

Good luck on the search, Brian. Seems rabbit holes around are always deep. Your last photo and markup have the solution. However, since this was connect the rudders and if the rigging got shot away, then turning one rudder would only move the one with the shot away rigging in one direction. Unless it was a very stiff, almost solid wire with little bend to it.

Interesting. This is one deep rabbit hole to dive down. I would think that hemp rope would have rotted away but then again, I'm no expert. If it's chain, then centers might be filled with mud/rust. The kink could be two links rusted together. Which raises a question... other gunboats of the period that have been found, what did they have? My first impression was that that part was an iron/steel rod and what's labeled "tiller" might not be a tiller

No rush. We're a patient lot. -
Mango, Toni is right on how to mark off and plank. I'll add the following file to help out. It's a planking fan. Simple to use... plankingfan.pdf

Jim Byrnes Thickness Sander Operation Tips
mtaylor replied to ChrisLBren's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
While I don't have the Byrnes, I find that speed and feed rate play a factor as well as depth. My guess if you feel speed and feed are good, lessen depth. Also, check that the wood isn't tilting particularly near the end of the sheet. I made an extension for my sander to stop that. It's basically just a block of wood as high as the bed and sits on the output side. Edit.. I see Druxey and I cross posted. Do try the output side extension. -

Nice looking stable of aircraft. As for the Mosquito... go for it. Do a log.

The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
