Hi everyone Thanks heaps for all of your comments and Likes, especially to Ben for his professional expertise as a naval architect. Unfortunately, Father Xmas brought me some very unwelcome early Christmas gifts shortly after I posted the photos above. Kidney Stones and my very first ride in an Ambulance to the Emergency Dept! I got discharged a few hours ago. What fun. My shipyard may slow down a bit whilst I deal with them, so please bear with me. All the best to you all! Patrick

Hi everyone Many thanks for all of your comments and Likes! Greatly appreciated! Tonight, I've continued to work on the hull...more sanding, more puttying, more shaping, etc, etc, etc. I hope I've been true to Ben's suggestions about the flare in the bow and the overall underwater's shape. If not, it's not too late to still work on it. Anyhow, here's the results! Cheers and thanks Patrick Sent from my iPad

Hi Nils Absolutely amazing! Quick question in relation to the hull painting. Would I be right in guessing that you'd have to spray paint the hull instead of hand brushing it for fear of covering over the rivets? Just curious. Cheers Patrick

Hi Mark A "display" only model! That must've been a hard decision to make, particularly after all the work you've put into it. Nevertheless, even as a display model, it'll still look brilliant. All the best Patrick

Very nicely done, Mark! I can't carve for the life of me, so I tip my hat off to you! What you've done is a perfect example of 'if at first you don't succeed, then keep trying and it'll turn out really nicely". Cheers Patrick

Hi Jond You are ready to start the build and we're ready to follow along! Cheers and all the best! Patrick

Hi Cathead Beautiful and very nicely detailed work. I'm looking forward to your next update, although, I understand that it may be some way away. All the best! Patrick

Hi Greg Ain't nothing wrong with assuming things....!!! I'm actually not too sure how I'm going to proceed with the hull. I could use it as a plug and plank over it. Alternatively, I may actually use the wooden hull as the hull itself and paint it. The important thing is that whatever method I decide upon, I'll still need to be able to separate the hull so that the individual decks can be viewed. Stay tuned, whilst I try to figure it out! Thanks and all the best Patrick

Thanks George. Bill and Ben's advice was invaluable and so was the clay mock up. But, without a proper set of plans, it's really a 'suck it and see' sort of job, at the moment....you know, a little bit here, a little bit there...all the while trying to stay within the general direction set out by Ben. Still heaps of fun, though. All the best and thanks! Cheers Patrick

Hi everyone I'm very grateful for all your comments and Likes. Keep'em coming, because it keeps me going! Tonight, I've had a go at carving the wooden hull, based upon the clay mock up and advice from Ben and Bill. Here are some photos of the rough job so far. Heaps more sanding, patching and sanding and patching (you know the drill) to go. But at least it's a start. Hope you're all well and all the best! Cheers Patrick

Wow, Nils. The plating is really giving the hull a boost of realism; that's for sure. Nicely done. Cheers Patrick

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
