Beautiful family, Michael. I reckon we know who the proud grandfather in the background is! Congrats!

Hi Jesse Marvellous! A true family heirloom for sure. I guess, in light of its fragility, you'd need to pack it away pretty securely so that it can be displayed for many more Christmas' to come. Cheers Patrick

Hi Jesse Very nice!!! I must say, though, that of all the various genres of model boat building, it's SIBs that mystify and captivate me the most. I think it's got a lot to do with the "Whoa...I'm too scared to try that!" mentality that sticks in my mind. Well, maybe one day, I'll be brave enough to try one. Great job, though Jesse. Like Mark said, it's sure to look great hanging off your tree. Cheers Patrick

Hi Dimitris I'm just catching up with your latest photos of the bowsprit with the gold decorations and figure head. The portholes look great as well. Really impressive work! As Nils has said above, the rigging's not far away. I'm looking forward to seeing the next phase. Cheers and all the best! Patrick

Hi Nigel, Bob, Michael and Ben Many thanks for all of your comments and for those who hit the Like button as well. Michael-thanks for your question. The hull material is Evergreen styrene sheet, which is light, thin and seems perfect for the job. Hope this helps. Nigel-welcome aboard and thanks for your well wishes, too. Cheers Patrick

Hi everyone I'm back!!! Thanks for all the well wishes-greatly appreciated! Well, over the past couple of nights, I was able to use the wooden plug as the mould for Majellan's hull. The results are below, which show the rough hull removed from the plug. Please note that it looks rough and messy, only because it is! Next job is to sand all the putty off, add the transom, etc, etc. Lots of work to go, but it's good to at least get back to building again. Thanks Patrick

Hi Denis She's really coming along nicely, especially with the decks and superstructure added temporarily. By the way, is that your Half Moon making a cameo appearance in the background??? Looking good! Cheers Patrick

Hi Jesse Yep...really nice job on the copper plates. I'm in the 'patina' camp, because I've always thought it looks more weathered and, hence realistic; but that's just me. Whichever way you choose would look just as good. Nice job! Cheers Patrick

Hi Jesse The last photo of the sea looks great, as does the first shot of the fully rigged ship. I reckon you must be on the tail end now. Not long to go, now! Cheers Patrick

Hi Panagiotis Marvellous work and congratulations on a truly beautiful model. You've got to be really chuffed with it! I'd also imagine that your ship generated a fair bit of interest during the exhibition, especially seeing as it's a Greek warship. Additionally, like you, I'm keen to see the water shots, so, hopefully it'll be a quick winter. All the best! Patrick

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
