Ah shirt sleeves, the bane of ship modellers, especially when it comes to masting and rigging  I shall take great care Kurt when it comes to those stern frames, a little way off yet I think.

    Fairing, fairing, and more fairing.
Another day of sand and check, sand and check, and for a bit of light relief, check and sand.

The test strips seem to be sitting fair across the bulkheads, only the central four bulkheads seem to require no adjustment although they will have the char taken off.
At this point I think I can fit the batten strip to mark the gun port sills.

Seems to run with a fair curve, at least to my eye.

    Happy New Year to all!

Not too much to show for a little bit of extra time in the shipyard, but have put a bookend on the work at the stern and quarter galleries for now.  Basically, all I've done is glue the quarter gallery sections in place together with the various rails (Upper stool, rim and lower stool rails).  This took much longer than expected as  I had so many pieces of rework, either because if breakage when shaping, fitting or by trimming a little too much (despite reciting 'don't take off too much' continually under my breath) and needing to restart.  It was also challenging as the quarter gallery rails needed to match as well as possible to the upper and lower counter rails.  Anyway, don't think the pictures need much additional explanation - other than that some are taken without any touchup, but the extra time afforded by the site outage allowed me to get a little more done.

Suffice to say, I'm very pleased with the way the quarter galleries turned out, definitely challenging, but worth the extra time.  The PE lights still require some work and these will not be put in place yet, but I wanted to get a sense for the overall look and the lines.  Of course final judgement is left to others

The kit supplied console brackets  proved to be a little oversized, to keep the same feel as the plans I wanted these to fit snuggly between the upper stool and the rim rails.  For comparison, you can see the adjusted starboard side bracket to the not yet adjusted port side on the left.

Taking a step back to compare to the plans and assessing varied angles I think I've done as much as can be done to bash any provided parts into something a little more consistent.  As always, the human eye is a little more forgiving in person.  The plan profile is enlarged from the AOTS book.  The quarter gallery sculptures now have a definite 'ledge' to visually support them and I'm glad I invested the extra time here.

Looks good Rob...and I like the blue!  Glad it wasn't just me that had a bit of a tough time figuring out the stern, but looking very nice.  Interested to see how the lights turn out.  I agree with you, the width of the stern frames do not tie in with the projections in the AOTS.  I have the 1:48 plans on order from NMM so will be interested to see which proves most accurate.  You look to be on track making sure everything aligns nicely, trial and error seems to be the only way and recognizing where compromises are needed to keep the 'look and feel' - even when the projections are scaled to account for the curve and the angle, it doesn't account for the curvature of the fascia in 3 dimensions and how the lower curve appears.

Hi Stergios - I got them from Blue Jacket Shipcrafters.  I seem to recall they were the 'bullseyes' - but don't recall which ones exactly...

    Time for another update.

I've been working on the stern lights, trying to work out how to create these myself so that I could ditch the photo-etch ones, which others have documented are not the same shape as the lights in AOTS... they are smaller, and the curve is not uniform.

To that end, I started making some 5mm deep ones, version 2 was 3mm deep, and now I'm trying some that are ~2mm deep. All out of .7mm boxwood veneer.

These are built up on a CAD drawn template based on the AOTS stern view (which has been extended vertically to take into account the diagram being directly stern-on, and the actual fascia being tilted - further astern at the top and further towards the bow at the bottom.

I've also been working on the stern fascia itself. I've taken "Beef Wellington"'s lead and recreated this myself. The kit parts are all 2mm ply... I've used 3mm walnut, and used the extra depth to shape the covings. They're also based on the vertically extended AOTS pattern, which was cut out and stuck onto the walnut to provide the template to cut out. The new cutouts for the lights are to proper scale, and should fit the new windows nicely (it looks pretty close at the moment, but time will tell.) As it stands I'm feeling much more confident about this part of the model. The stern will be considerably narrower than the kit, but the lights should look more to scale. It will mean that the quarter galleries will need to be shallower.  If I were starting again, I would have narrowed the last few frames to bring this in... but this would have been far from simple, and it'll have to stand now.

Planning: (this is all a bit Ted Heath, but I'll have another crack at it now I've got a bit further with the stern fascia.)

Stern light trials... They are very uneven here, but the uneven face will face into the stern, and the even face (face down on the board) will be the side that you see...

    And the stern fascia...

Using some maths (that was a bit of a shock to the system), I worked out that for 140mm of width, and 8mm of depth for the horizontal curvature (creating a radius of just over 310mm), the additional length for the stern fascia would only be 1.1mm.... basically, I need to leave a tiny bit on instead of sanding down to the line!

Much happier with this than with the kit-supplied parts. Nothing wrong with those parts... they'd be fine... but I'm enjoying the kit-bashing aspect of this even more (and it has the added benefit of making the whole process last a bit longer, and giving me an excuse to use lovely wood.)

Happy building and a very happy new year to you all!

I'm very happy to finally be able to introduce MSW community to an exciting new television series that I am a part of. Produced by AMC, "The Terror" is based on a novel of the same name by Dan Simmons.  Last year, I was contacted by AMC and hired as a technical advisor on the show. I can’t say much about it yet, but I can confirm that they really did their homework.

The trailer has just been released. I hope you all tune in to watch!
