I don't mind the clutter, makes your workspace more alive. Nice rigging though.

Being part of this huge project, (which we never expected from the beginning) I am very honored that the barge design I did got the name of the former president of the union Alan Cote. I would never believe such a thing would happened.
As Floyd mentioned, it feels extremely good to have been part of a project that will benefit Maritime students in their learning process of getting a well paid job.
I am thankful for all the support and help provided during this time.
Without Neal and Floyd this would have never happened.
This joint venture has been a challenge and a lot of hair tearing.... lol, but at the end we pulled it together.
I am very proud of what we have accomplished.
I know for sure there will be a picture of the barge and tug together while being used for educational purpose.

Steve, you have gotten long into your build log, it all looks so good and clean. You will be done in short time.

Nirvana reacted to CPDDET in Bluenose by CPDDET - Model Shipways - Scale 1:64 - First ship build
Finished planking the quarterdeck. Gave both decks a light sanding and a single coat of wipe on poly.
I noticed that when I installed the deck end planks I made them a bit too wide, covering the top hull plank. I see that the bulwark needs to rest on the top hull plank so I needed to trim back the deck end planks.
I drew a guide line on both sides and used a razor blade saw to trim them. May still need some sanding to make enough room for the bulwarks.
Now my chickens have come home to roost.
I have to pay for my error of trimming off all the bulkhead extensions before installing the bulwarks. Since I will have to glue all the false frame timbers I decided to run a small test on adhesives. I took a scrap piece of waterway board and glued 3 false frame timbers to it. I used CA on one, Gorilla glue on another and Original Titebond on the 3rd. Because it will be impossible to clamp the false frame timbers, I’ll leave that dry overnight and see if one glue is better than the others.
Any advice on the upcoming process would be greatly appreciated. It's tough being a newbie on their first build, LOL.

Well I think I have the hull nearly finished and I am almost ready to go to the next step.
Before I post my results, consider a few steps I used in forming some of the strakes. I have included this for readers who may be unfamiliar with this technique.
Above: Wide Patco tape overlayed with Scotch tape marked with #4 pencil. This step is typical
Above: Tape on basswood sheet.
Above: Blade used to mark wood prior to cutting. Tape removed in case a second cut is needed.
Above: Plank ready for trimming to fit. Used sanding sticks for final shaping.
Results so far:
Above: Some “tar” lines more pronounced than others.* Also, butt joints are slightly different than plans.
*The dark lines are not gaps rather they are pencil lines added after strakes were in place as much of the original pencil lines came off during sanding. I have decided not to try and make every line uniformly the same as I cannot imagine real boats as having everything done in perfection.
The hull is not completely smooth from some strakes to others, but I feel rather good about the outcome. Sanding might improve the smoothness but I don’t want to risk sanding too far.
Above: Dark area is wood filler which I think will be completely below the water line paint.

I should mention that Alan Cote was a former president of the union that has worked closely with the Tongue Point School to help all of their students find jobs once the graduate. Alan passed away recently and the school has asked that the barge be dedicated to him. There is going to be a memorial service on the 18th. The rendering presented here by Per will be present at the service. I should mention that for those who graduate and with the help of the Union 98% get high paying jobs. Despite all the issues and challenges, it feels good to be able to help so many find a future in the Maritime industry. I will be visiting the school on the 4th of June and delivering the tug.

Adding a rendering of the barge.
From not knowing anything about Fusion360 and it's tools, I have learned a lot.
A great tool where you can send files for 3d printing, laser cutting and CNC/routing machining.
The barge has it's name dedicated.

My part of this project is coming to an end, the design of the barge.
There are a few small details to be fixed but also being a support to Floyd for remaining part of build period.
Looking forward getting back to my Bluenose, who is waiting for attention again.

Does anyone here have any experience with this company? They offer heavy aluminum tool supports to convert your rotary tool into a micro mill; lathe; drill press; or router/shaper table. I am mainly interested in their drill press. Their site makes this claim: DRILL PRESS PLUS GIVES YOU STABILITY WITH THE DREMEL TOOL. MACHINED FROM SOLID ALUMINUM, AND WATER HARDENED 1/2” DRILL RODS. THIS IS A TOOL THAT WILL NOT WEAR OUT, AND WILL ALWAYS DRILL SMALL HOLES ACCURATELY.
Looking at the illustrations that are shown, I would tend to believe those claims. It appears to be quite solidly constructed and has the added benefit of being American made. I have the drill press accessory made by DREMEL, but it is not really stable enough to drill small holes without breaking the micro size drill bits. Their price at $140 + S & H also seems reasonable, but I haven't seen any reviews to base my opinion on, so I am fishing here for some input.

Dave....I know I have seen references out here to Vanda-Lay in the past. If you punch "Vanda-Lay" into the search box at the top you will get three pages of threads that refer to them. Many of them refer to other products but at least a few mention the drill press. You might start by looking at those threads if you have not already done so.

Thanks Gary. (I'm afraid that didn't even think of using that search function. ) I went through all three pages and found that with all the good comments in there, I think I'm sold on getting one. Will probably get their optional accessory table to go with it. I will try it out and give a review myself of how well it works.
