Got a little work done on the Syren this week, between cooking chores for the big Thanksgiving thing. I have most of the bulkheads sanded and dry fit (no glue yet) and am working on the filler block concept. I also fashioned a jig to hold her straight while all this is taking place. I decided on a jig with one half bolted in place and the other fence made adjustable and managed by using clamps. This way I can keep it tight, but also remove the ship, when needed, with ease.
    Happy day to you all.

Jon, My commiseration to the turkey but I hope everyone else had a good time.

The main topsail was the subject of last nights and todays activity.

I started as normal with a template. Basically as per the plans with minor adjustment as a result of offering it up to the topmast. The plans do not show the cutback of the luff to clear the top of the mainmast. As the cutback is clearly visible in the photos I decided to include it.

The sail was made on the template with wired edges etc etc - as previously described for other sails.

The topsail and jack yards were then attached and the sail spliced on. At the bottom right is my splicing (stitching) aid - the twine is cemented into a small bore tube (.08" OD) and the end is chamfered to a sharp point.

The sail is mounted on the topmast secured only at the top by the halliard and at the waist by the sliding ring. The tack is still hanging loose and the sheets are not yet rigged. The Halliard is temporarily secured by forceps - visible in the photos.

    Jesse,
apparently you are doing a good job as the yard master (your kitty) is more interested of cleaning than supervising.
    That looks so good.

Mike, I don't know about the new sails..... little to bright in my opinion, I do like the original as it gives some character to the Brigantine....
but it seems that the restoration is coming along nicely.

Hmm, so it seems that my bluenose got a little fat stern area...
    Nothing that can be fixed.
First I checked the laser piece towards the plan, and found it accurate.

Well, placing the piece on the ship and I saw she was wider than I thought, must be all the ice cream consumed while modeling
When doing so having the main rail part on the stanchions, I can have it flush with the waist without any overhang, but this will give her a large lip instead.

My solution and this was the easy way out instead of making a whole new piece.
I made two cuts into the part, and then will create fill pieces. Once painted only I will know along with everybody else following this thread.
This way there won't be a lip but also I will get the overhang I am looking for.
    Pictures are exaggerated.

    Jesse Lee,

It wont really resemble a MSW Syren with the changes you have made, first class. The stern, rudder, and wheel in addition to all the other refinements changes the whole aesthetics of the build. Kudos this Buds for you

Had a bit of fun last night making up a little cross section of the hull and trying out processes like Tree nails, paint, masking tape, colour mix etc. I felt a bit like a chemist diluting the stain to get it right. It all went well until I knocked over one of the container on the work bench and in the process of getting a rag knocked my toe a beauty.... Probably a reminder why chemistry wasn't my thing.
The drying times might have suffered a bit as well, I was not that patient. I'm glad I made the effort though because I learned a lot.
I have one question though. Does anyone warm up the wax stick a bit to make it softer. I'm a bit nervous of denting the wood when I press the wax into the holes. The wax seems quite hard. Or is there another trick to it.

I don't believe you're the first to have a misfit piece.  I believe I read this several times in older build logs that this piece needed to be trimmed or remade.

After you drill (or punch or whatever you do) the holes for putty, consider putting some type of sealant (like a flat, clear lacquer) in the holes before putting the putty in. That should help keep the stain in the putty from migrating into the end grain of the holly. One nice thing about putting a clear finish in the holes is that you should be able to scrape the deck to get any excess off.

    Just a thought.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks,

Now back to the model. As mentioned above I was struggling with 2 problems. The first was how to drill the hold in the copper plate stamp. I hope the new replacement tool I ordered from MicroMark solves this issue.

The 2nd was using Holly for Deck planking. You will see a picture below that shows a sample of the Deck. I think the indoor lights add a lot of yellow to the photos. Anyway I mentioned that scraping did not remove all of the putty from the Treenailing. Well I got the bright Idea to try a bit of Danish oil. This worked perfectly. So I am working on the deck now. In the picture below you will see the before and after with the Danish Oil. The picture is poor but you can see the smudging around the 2nd row of treenailing. the top show after 1 coat of Danish Oil. I think it also darkens the planks just a little bit. I really like the result.

First I cut out from a copy of the plans the deck layout. And I cutout the gratings from these Plans. I used this to mark the model for the gratings. Then I marked the bulkheads on the plan template. Next I painted the area on the model under the gratings Black. And finally I am now test laying out my deck planks on the plan template before I install them on the model.

I have to make sure I do a backup of pictures for build log, this as I use both regular camera but also the phones camera.
    Update from last night.
The interior stern planking is completed. And I didn't break the posts.
Remaining planking of transom/stern is now in progress (not for the moment this hour)

Floyd, Sorry about my spell checker - likes pdf much more that MDF - bah! computer programmers are so uninformed!  Glad you could decipher that.

I've been assembling the latest version of my copper plate jig.   I milled a channel in a base plate and cut a small strip off my self-healing mat.

I've added sides to guide the nail head jig.  The samples I'm getting of the nail head impression are more to my liking.  I'm pretty sure the mat will prevent the blurring I encountered on the previous jig.  I'll be posting more on my Syren log in the next couple of days.

Also I mentioned that I was rushing to get the model in a presentable state. I got far enough but did not get the deck on. I took it anyway to the Birthday celebration at the US Navy Station in Everett, WA. Unfortunately almost no one understood what I was showing. They asked if it had oars and many other similar questions. I guess I need to wait until I have masts. It was a good event. We had 30 people there. One of our members told about how he had to bail out about 40 years ago. He is till the only person to bail out of a US Navy plane and end up floating in Crater Lake.
