First wooden build? WOW Very impressive work my friend. How do you take on such a project as a first? I wouldn't have the nerve. I guess you just do it.

Your whaleboat looks fantastic. The colors are perfect and in you last set of pictures it looks like it is sitting dockside waiting to be loaded onto the ship. I have this kit in the closet but have been afraid to start it without enough experience under my belt. I look forward to seeing the equipment being built. Your project is an inspiration.

Dan, Thanks for taking the time to put all this information and photos in your build log. I have one of these little boats in my stash but don't feel I'm ready to build it just yet. Yours is looking darn nice and you are gaining some good expierience in the proccess. Al

Russ, It's just about 1/16" at the top and gets a bit thicker as it gets closer to the deck. I don't think it will show once all the internal detail is added. At this point I think it should be ok to even it up and smooth it out. There are a couple of places at the bow that it got right down to the planks but it's awful thin.

What a pain. I am carving away the solid bulwarks to the planking on my Kate Cory. I have been using a gouge, chisel and #11 blades and it is slowly coming along. I'm not sure if I will take it all the way to the planks or leave a thin bit of wood to add support. I am thinking of using one of those Dremel sanding wheels with the flappers on it. Any suggestions? Al

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
