WASHINGTON GALLEY by yamsterman - 1/48 scale - POF

Recommended Posts

Hi Mick,

Just found the forum.  Particularly interested in the acrylic jigs.  Too often the lighting is on the opposite side of a fixture and makes things frustrating.  I'm starting on an extreme clipper "Young American".  I can use all the good ideas I can find.

Looking forward to your work, Bob

Bob

hi bob

the acrylic was a bit of lateral thinking...I too was having trouble lining up my marks....the original ply jigs were too "clunky"......I will be sticking too acrylic in future!

look forward to your build of edt s extreme clipper....1/96 or 1/72 scale?

great thing about this forum is theres so many highly skilled guys and gals on here its the best resource on the planet!

cheers....mick

Hi Mick,

I was seriously thinking of up grading to 1:48, but that was a bit over the top. So, its 1:72.  I've just gotten the new shipway built and started on the keel/stem assembly.  Like all good modelers, new projects are an excuse for new toys.  I'm in the process of setting up a new Sherline  lathe.

Thanks for sharing.  Always looking forward to learning something new

Bob

Space is something which is allways insufficient. It's the same with the time.

I made the mistake some years ago to think too much about the space my models need and forget to build one. So I have space but no model.

If you like to build such a big model perhaps also as POF do it. You will need several years for the research and the build and no one knows what happend in the meantime.

Hope you understand my denglish. ;)

hi christian

your english is fine and perfectly understandable.......i wish my schoolboy german was up to the same standard!

i do have the seawatch practicum and plans for swan class (hms echo ) and also for hms euryalus.....these are high on my priority list for p.o.f construction.

there are several monographs from jean boudroit at ancre which are also clamouring for my attention

i think it will eventually be a case of stuff the lack of space im going to build them anyway and i will worry about where to put them at a later date!

lifes to short to spend too much time cogitating.....i need too build!!!!!

cheeers for now.....mick

HI ALL

NOW THAT THE FORWARD CANT FRAMES ARE ALL IN ITS TIME TO START THE DREADED HAWSE PEICES.

THE LAMINATED BLOCKS FOR THESE WERE MADE UP PREVIOUSLY FROM SOME 1/8 INCH STOCK SOMEWHAT OVERSIZE MAINLY SO ID GOT SOMETHING TO HANG ON TO WHISLT I SHAPED THEM.

THE BLOCKS WERE SHAPED TO THE PLANVIEW OVER THER ENTIRE LENGTH FIRST.

A CARD STOCK PROFILE OF THE STEM REBATE...AFTER EDGE...WAS THEN MADE AND USED TO MARK OUT FOR THE FIRST SHAPING CUT WITH A JEWELLERS SAW. THE STEM PROFILE HAS BEEN TWEAKED WITH SOME RIFLER FILES UNTIL ITS ABOUT RIGHT....FINAL FINISHING WILL COME LATER WHEN THE HULL IS FAIRED.

THE ANGLE OF THE BLOCK MATCHES NICELY WITH THE ANGLE BETWEEN THE FORWARD FACE OF THE FINAL CANT FRAME AND THE STEM DEADWOOD SO HOPEFULLY IVE DONE SOMETHING RIGHT!!!!

THE NEXT PROFILE CUT WAS AGAINST THE FORWARD FACE OTF THE LAST CANT FRAME AGAIN WITH A JEWELLERS SAW AND FINISHED WITH RASPS.

SOME MORE SMOOTHING OF THE OUTSIDE FACES IS NEEDED AND SOME FINAL FETTLING OF THE EDGE THAT MATES UP WITH THE STEM REABTE.

THE NEXT AWKWARD BIT IS PROFILIG THE INSIDE FACE......AND THEN REPEATING FOR THE OTHER SIDE.

HOPE THIS ALL MAKES SENSE!!

PHOTOS ENCLOSED ALL COMMENTS MOST WELCOME.

CHEERS FOR NOW......MICK

hi Patrick

tricky is probably the politest word I could use! hawse timbers are now complete...see next post.....and my hands ache from holding relatively small...for me,positively gigantic for you Patrick! , components in order to rasp and scrape into shape.

time for a rest......if it wasn't so grey an "orrrible" I could tell if the sun was over the yardarm yet......time for a livener......maybe a bit later on reflection!

hi Patrick

easy? no! but in all honesty it was more straightforward than I was anticipating.........as long as you work to one profile first ie the stem rebate......then work to the cant frame profile.......then fair the outside curve until its about right...leave a bit on for final fairing.

the inside was marked out off the cant frame and stem and most the waste "carved" out with a scalpel fitted with a 10a blade.......the concavity is formed by those lovely little cabinet scrapers.......DIETER SMITH TOOLS, BERLIN.......highly recommended tool emporium.

as a first ever set of hawse frames I'm quite pleased with the result.......the glue is now setting!

the forward gunport sills are also in and glued ......will fit the lintels later after some fodder......and then time for some of scotlands finest!!!!

cheers....mick

hi nigel

thank you and thanks for stopping by.

the awkward bits are done for the time being........some of those stern timbers will be a challenge to get right though......but that's for much later.

tomorrow operation frame will begin!!

the bulk of the rest of the frames are fairly straightforward.....but with careful attention to gunport and sweep port sills and lintels.

should keep me busy for a few weeks yet.

Splice the main brace, indeed, Mick.    Those hawse timbers look perfect from here.  They are indeed some the trickest and most fiddly bits of the framing.

hi mark

thank you.....not quite sure about perfect....but they do fit nicely......lets see how much timber is left when ive faired the hull!!!!

I was approaching these parts with some trepidation after reading how difficult they can be.....indeed they are not simple to make but I have to say I quite enjoyed spending a quiet sunday morning with some hand tools whittling away.

Hi Mick,

I'm saving your thumbnails of the hawser frames for future reference when I get to the bow of YA. Very nicely done.

Have you got a web address for Dieter Smith Tools in Berlin??  I'm always looking for unique tools.

Also, I noted your Lie-Nielsen Model plane.  I've had one for years and wouldn't do without it.  The A2 tempered steel blade stays sharp forever.  I can't recall the last time I had to sharpen it.  I also have the Violin Maker Plane. Both are great for modeling.  I have been collecting their tools for over thirty years.  My son wants to make sure they are in my will.

Take care,  Bob

Bob

hi bob

many thanks for the compliments bob......my first go at hawse frames.....thankfully theres no air gaps or other complications with this model.....i think they would prove more challenging when i get round to hms echo and euryalus......but having said that i think i use pretty much the same approach.

i dont have an address as such , i wish i knew how to post a link, my computer skills are not what they should be really.

having said that if you do a google search for dieter smith fine tools it should get you to the right website.

i agree with your comments on lie nielson tools...absolutely magnificent....i wouldnt be without my modelmakers plane.

i too have a little brass flat soled luthiers plane which i find indispensible for small scale planing jobs.

i would also recommend quangsheng planes......i know that they are chinese  BUT they are made to british standards and are at least on a par with clifton and veritas......the build quality is excellent and the tool steel for the blades takes and holds a fine edge.

their block planes are useful for larger scale work and they have just released an all bronze mini block plane which i shall be investing in.

they can be found at WORKSHOP HEAVEN.CO.UK

it would be good for your son to inherit your tools.....he in turn can pass them on to his son in due course.

looking forward to following your YA build.

cheers....mick

I wish it was easy..........but then again it wouldn't be worth doing if it was easy!!!

it is a constant learning curve this ship modelmaking hobby of ours......which is why I like it so much!

I very much admire the work of our friends in Russia....some brilliant ship modelmakers over there

and I thank you for your compliments.

HI ALL

TIME FOR AN UPDATE TO PROVE I HAVNT BEEN TOO LAZY OVER THE FESTIVE PERIOD.

FRAMES ARE CONTINUING TO BE BUILT........STERN TO DEAD FLAT ARE NOW READY TO BE INSTALLED........DEAD FLAT TO FORWARD HALF FRAME ARE YET TO BE BUILT.

FIRST OF ALL THOUGH A CONFESSION HAS TO BE MADE

I HAD BEEN CUTTING RECESSES FOR SWEEP PORTS AND GUNPORTS AS I BUILT THE FRAMES. THE SWEEP PORTS PROVED TO BE QUITE STRAIGHTFORWARD.......HOWEVER THE SECOND GUNPORT FROM THE STERN ENDED UP AS A TRAPEZOID......HMMMN.......NOT CORRECT METHINKS!

SO THE RELAVANT PAIR OF FRAMES HAD TO COME OUT.....ISO TO THE RESCUE!!!!.......AND BE REMADE.

I SHALL NOW BE FOLLOWING GREGS EARLIER SUGGESTION AND CUT THE APPERTURES FOR SILLS AND LINTELS AFTER THE FRAMES ARE IN SITU.

WE LIVE AND LEARN AND I AM ALWAYS WILLING TO BOW TO WISER AND MORE EXPERIENCED HEADS!!!!!

PHOTOS OF CURRENT PROGRESS INCLUDED......THE LAST ONE SHOWS THE FRAMES JUST PLACED ON THE KEEL FOR EFFECT NOTHINGS BEEN GLUED YET.

CHEERS.......MICK
