I'm still tossing up between Privet (which is what the framing is) or Cherry Ballart - a dark coloured Australian native timber. My current thinking is that the Cherry Ballart will be too dark. Do you happen to know if this is the same Meteor that departed Liverpool 24 Sept 1858 and arrived in Melbourne 29 Dec 1858. This is the ship and voyage on which my great great grandparents arrived from Wales in Australia. As the 'Meteor' I'm building was a Hamburg ship, the Master should have a German name. The inside of the hull is looking fairly civilised now and the outside is at least starting to come together. Perhaps I'll actually finish the frame one day! Next step will be to start on the transom framing and then a total clean up of the outside of the hull before some planking starts. I really feel that getting to the stage of thinking about the transom framing is a real milestone. I seem to have been stuck on the main hull framing for ever. The major elements of the transom framing are now in place so she's looking like a ship at last. Still some detail pieces to fit around the transom and then some final fairing up and sanding of the exterior before I give her a bit of planking to firm up the whole structure. It will be a little while until my next update as I won't be in at the museum for the next three weeks.
