Stage 3 building the after superstructure in Plasticard

I purchased A4 and A5 sheets of card from Amazon/Ebay in 0.5mm, 0.75mm and 1mm

made a better light box by using a sheet of glass placed over a lamp

IMG_1213.thumb.JPG.fa1517e59b11fee89e4952f4e9491ab8.JPG

over the plans I layed a thin sheet of plastic and traced the plan lines onto it, this then also act as a floor

I managed to obtain a few photos of the hanger internal details, as i want to display it with the hanger door open, i may also go for a few other bulkhead door to be open as i proceed so i am having to think ahead, plus i am having to think about where the wiring for the radars and lights be be going

i actually spent a bit to much time playing with the hanger, she has an office and oil store opposite the hanger doors with sliding doors so i have tried to  create this, but still needs a lot of work to pass the rivet counters, from there it was quite easy to continue with the rest of the after superstructure at main deck level

office and oil store

Good evening everyone, just mended my PC by putting a new power supply in, so i can make a post tonight

not happy with my first attempt at the superstructure in Plasticard, so last weekend i started again, it is going together much better this time, the problem i am finding is that the plans, for the cost are well poor, i have found lots of mistakes, but the worst part is that some of the lines are as thick as the plastic i am using, so having to be very careful each each cut could be at least 1MM out
also references are not as plentiful as anticipated, on the forward end of the hanger by the doors there are lots of air vents/exhausts, and at present i am unable to work out haw the fit
thoroughly enjoying this,
Stbd side aft this is where the replenishment at sea rig (RAS) was fitted, but removed at some point around 1980

IMG_1332.thumb.JPG.79d444d5a3b02f8fd63d4f4e48f315ce.JPG

the offices located in the hanger are to tall, so will have to be adapted/replaced

IMG_1333.thumb.JPG.80a1fd5b1a62e1930e39a7257a1060ae.JPG

aft of the hanger the RAS rig is the pillar on the right

IMG_1335.thumb.JPG.03933b45b64dd0fc78057d2329967a23.JPG

this was created as one piece on the two previous attempts, worked out much better as a seperate module

IMG_1371.thumb.JPG.ec2668bdec8177216a54a196093e0685.JPG

the basics of the after mast has now been made, it is hollow too allow for a motor and wiring

IMG_1372.thumb.JPG.81a0e68433613d0e74602b088d084d10.JPG

comparing the picture above with this one,  it appears that the hangars are too far back.   they should be flush with the aft section of the structure,  and appear more boxy.   is there a port side outer wall that you haven't added yet?   no offence either......always good to know where you are with your project.   it is from that picture though,  that I see this.......perhaps something you haven't though of yet

Kevin - are they Jecobin plans? I built a type 22 to their plans but supplemented them with a lot of photographs.

I built the superstructure from 1/32 thick plywood - it has a deal more stiffness than plasticard.  Here's my type 22 for interest.

I'm enjoying your build, its coming along well.

Kevin - its my age, I of course meant type 22. I have never used fleet scale plans but I did find Jecobin to be generally fine. Not sure why it would be on the fleet scale forum - but anything seems possible in this virtual world.

Sorry Keith I presumed it was a fleetscale hull, they have a lot of builds on their own forum, I am using Jecobin plans,

amazing how they can get the helo in and out of there ;)   you've shown two possible ways to detail it out......either way,  there's a lot to the interior.   my son found me a 1:400 Heller kit of the Jeanne D'Arc.   the kit comes with four Helicopters.   have you found any helicopter kits that will fit the scale of your vessel?   lots of ducting,  the shelf/rack at the fore end and the rotor rack above.   the model pictures look great.......but they forgot the no smoking sign :D

one of the reasons for picking the 1/72 version over the smaller 1/96 was the availability of the wessex HAS3 Falklands Helo

Popeye she was heavenly converted after being sold to Chile and renamed

The Royal navys idea of the side entry hanger, was quite silly, and the conversion allowed her two helo, it was the Seaslug system that dictated the design this had become very outdated very fast

the top photo is how she was when i served on her with the Exocet system fitted where B turret used to be

  • 2 weeks later...

Good evening everyone

the hanger idea did not work for me, when the door is cut the whole superstructure became to flexible, so back to the drawing board

the solution I came up with was to make an internal hanger to fit inside the main body

IMG_1415.thumb.JPG.48c0de1d8fe2e5213aea75b6c79d289d.JPG

IMG_1416.thumb.JPG.b4f36642c7232ce7f2d165c619a40116.JPGIMG_1417.thumb.JPG.fc7c40775f3a8e39048f9fef2c763a36.JPG

this has firm everything up and it is removable

helicopter arrived
