Frames look nice so far. Sometimes I think our primary hobby is sanding with a little ship modeling thrown in now and then.

Lmao Thanks alde I agree with you about the sanding ,but I find it somewhat soothing 😜

I decided to put in the nuts to mount the keel assembly to my build board . F043157E-8829-44D3-93FA-9A0163635C25.thumb.jpeg.fabe43231131021334f1f1ff926e917d.jpeg

first I ground down two sides of the nuts, using my dermal4F454F1A-AC08-485F-B332-424BB34E8FF1.thumb.jpeg.0071bca92fadfe82e0651977766c1aed.jpeg

Then I clamp the false keel and keel together in the vise and drilled through the false keel , and approximately half way into the keel  .B0FBEFD7-4499-433C-A765-A69293F1702B.thumb.jpeg.90f676937a655015ccf84debfe8eca4e.jpeg

using a 11 blade and files I cut out the recessed notch in the keel for the nuts to fit in flush

I then added glue to the keel and applied the false keel to the keel covering the recessed nuts I used a couple of screws to assure alignment and clamped it all together to dry.

Happy Thanksgiving fellow MSW Members :dancetl6:

Just a little update on my progress. I am still gluing frames together as I sit here smelling all the good things cooking in the kitchen . I had planned on finishing the gluing today but I fear once I eat the gluing will stop and the napping will proceed.

I was moving right along today sanding the frames with 80 grit to get close to the final shape I only had a couple more to go when I decided to get a refill on my coffee.stood up ,grabbed my cup and slung #5 frame across the room :default_wallbash:. Apparently it had hooked the cup 🤨.36C9CD88-6128-451B-8FD7-9052B6BB9C7C.thumb.jpeg.e070c165a8dc433ff4879fd8b2d05060.jpeg

so to fix it .I drilled holes in the center of each of the frame pieces, using a #72 bit.

i then cut two pieces of wire 3/4 of a inch in length ,and inserted them with glue into the holes of one piece then filled holes of other pieces with glue.5C6D92AC-52F7-4D82-BF00-F4AFF3EAE21F.thumb.jpeg.35408a9a74f229fa09f96a4fcbe9744f.jpeg

then in I assembled the pieces and set on a flat surface to dry.

tomorrow I will sand and see if it will hold up or if i need to cut and assemble a new frame.i feel pretty confident in the repair.

Here is a pic of the ones that are ready to get rubbed with 220 grit paper before assembly begins .D1DD745F-2863-4D74-96BE-83A84F031F0B.thumb.jpeg.61a206e924b8aee9a5cbcfcd7815be7a.jpegDC7BFFAE-FAD4-44EC-8290-0CCE145A00BE.thumb.jpeg.3626ab3de4a30fc1989cebbb39b0b123.jpeg

i will post a pic of the repaired frame tomorrow to show how it came out whether it’s good, bad, or ugly lol

Thanks for looking in .👋🏻

The repair on the frame feels strong , I will do a bit more sanding to it then take care of any cosmetics if needed.1DB47420-CA69-4230-AD51-B05838EEA748.thumb.jpeg.af660afd8b96292f61aed1339b80e056.jpeg9A40FA53-B023-4129-BE63-AA6546E97F8A.thumb.jpeg.2c48ca7c8b8d39c25724ff35c72277d5.jpegA4777537-99B5-49DE-99A3-860DDC28C65F.thumb.jpeg.5e82d367da850c64faa667160c7415c3.jpeg

i also worked on another cannon barrel using same technique as  used on the first barrel, I still need to make wheels for the second carriage and finish fitting them with hardware for rigging.B86845AF-CE9D-4E8D-B87B-DAA3DE34CF1B.thumb.jpeg.966c6fc5d9426667e922868c6971101f.jpeg

After sanding for a bit I got up enough confidence to assemble the frames to the keel. Now I wait for them to dry .Then I can pull out the spacers and tack in some temporary stiffeners to fair the inside and out .Everything is square and true right now I hope it stays that way once all the clamps and bands are removed. 🤞🏻383779C5-65A4-43DB-9BC8-E8D91D78EC23.thumb.jpeg.6bfc76870b7f9f9d2dbec1e4b453979d.jpeg0F772AAC-7A6F-4643-9B04-F2A86D1FE1D6.thumb.jpeg.d87b4027c8b9220db17fc3b9189de6e5.jpeg5270C692-C85A-437B-8DD7-3D0F1F50D6C8.thumb.jpeg.cc0c2e087d4d4c2bc5e0ed718491fe54.jpeg558EFFAB-F8C8-41AF-90B6-86A1C3E56553.thumb.jpeg.7fae4a907319f2a791d80439b1fb4d51.jpegFB54CE01-0B17-478E-97EC-FC9A7EEF22F5.thumb.jpeg.424e483867fdcd9a5d481e7102d116cc.jpeg739997C7-6AE0-4D64-8752-A6A9F9FF3CEE.thumb.jpeg.ee7285e4773d97e54db2602e11a8c1c6.jpeg9171FA47-F74E-4A3E-9A1B-06E5C3197223.thumb.jpeg.e40a9e56dd516f29817febb34dd5d691.jpeg

Hey Derek,

You are going fast! Your cross section quickly takes shape.

Nice repair you made at your frame. I believe that your frames are a bit fragile because the wood grain of the futtocks is at places very transversal. It had maybe been better that the grain follows more the direction of the futtock length.

Thanks G.L. I never thought about grain direction, I will definitely remember to take the grain direction into account next time I’m cutting out parts .

The Frames are Red Oak , the false keel and keelson are blood wood .

The planking will be cherry and  hard maple I’m thinking 🤔

I will be using a wipe on poly clear and natural . On the frames and planking

Thanks for the kind words and inquires on my build .

I worked on limber strake and limber boards today I got one side fit. I used a #11 blade to cut the seat for the limber board into the limber strake

ADDDCD73-CCA9-4096-8FF4-7341C88A4019.thumb.jpeg.0a1ad963ac9af77473d99c931d479b15.jpeg

i used files to get final shape.

The limber boards were shaped by hand using sanding blocks and files .667FE3C5-4D1D-4A67-AE1D-992EBAFED160.thumb.jpeg.bd062ef76a834f7f0a15d7f188133b31.jpeg

I then marked and scored with a small triangle file to simulate 4 foot scale sections and drilled holes in the ends of each section to allow the crew access. Using a high temp soldiering Iron I chard the scored marks, holes, and edges to give it a bit of character

I am working on the other side , now hopefully I can get it done tonight , but the admiral has other plans I believe.

Hope you like the progress, and thanks for looking in😁

You'll get there Derek.  I think everyone on their first scratch build feels that at some point.  Come to think of it, I think it applies to most of us with any build.

I cut , sanded , and prepared the rest of the planking dry fitting each plank as I went to ensure a proper fit. Then I got out the clamps and started gluing them down.

once i had all the planks down I trimmed ,and sanded both sides of the cross section to give it a nice edge .and again I used the soldiering iron to enhance the planking.30751EDE-BD82-47F4-B237-ACE5984B07B8.thumb.jpeg.c5a057cb012c51e1a5ad31ed3cedbc5f.jpeg

Thanks Chad !

the last few days I have been cutting Mahogany for the outer planking . I marked each on and then used a utility knife to cut them out . ECABF032-F0E1-4B94-B95B-BA2E36065884.thumb.jpeg.da2d721eee2f726e569483fc8086b246.jpeg

Then I clamped them in a vice using a random piece of teak I had laying around to bring the planking above the jaws of the vice.Using a razor blade and sanding block I got them uniform.

Here are the sanded planks I cut and prepared 41 planks I will make all final adjustments to them when gluing.

I layed down the planking up to where my lower deck will be placed . I used my soldering iron to blacken up all sides of the planks and then glued them down . I then marked out where I wanted my butt joints and nail holes and used my iron again to mark them out. I then rubbed it with 220 grit then 1000 grit paper and rubbed on a coat of clear poly.

This is how she is looking ,

I woke up today with a cold :default_wallbash:, not much energy , but I did get the faux tree nailing on the lower section of the inside . I figured I better get it done now before I start on the lower deck .

Then I cut out the four pieces of red oak to make the  main deck beams and placed them in the vice to start cleaning ,and sizing before I soak them .6B7EEC48-95BF-41CF-87A6-ECA01C175E34.thumb.jpeg.dd3346334e47c79ca495dac774e3f128.jpeg

Thanks

I got the deck beams clean and true then soaked them in hot water, for approximately a hour . Then I used a piece of 1/4 inch board under the center of the beams and clamped them down .

I decided to dry them quickly with my Dewalt heat gun ,

Once they dried I cut out the template for the beams to know where my notches needed to be ,and then glued them .

Then I broke out my files and started cutting in the notches .

Here they are dry fitted in place .
