HMS RaceHorse by ZyXuz - FINISHED - Sergal - Scale 1:47

Recommended Posts

Hi ZyXuz,

Just had look through your log , excellent work especially the rigging you have done so far, very neat :D

Thanks Jeff! for your kind comments..

I wonder how your model will hold out against the humid climate you live in.  Timber can shrink and expand in the heat. I hope you have air conditioning.

Oh, nice build by the way ...

oh, I didn't know that it can be this harmful.. maybe it hasn't reach that level yet..

Anyway, thanks for your info

it will be a ship which "follows a snake's path" - "Following a snake's path" in Polish is "Being Drunk" as in walking side-to-side like a snake would :P

yea, it's always good being drunk :D

then I should change my ship's name to Race 'Snake' already LOL

well, I've entered the most boring part of ship modelling... rigging the Ratlines @.@

This is my first attempt, gone terribly wrong...

very obvious hourglass shape.. so, I removed them all and reworked on them..

DSC_0226.JPG

After few more hours of reworkings.. here's the result!

DSC_0229.JPG

DSC_0232.JPG

hmm.. Although look much better, but the hourglass still slightly visible.. :(

DSC_0234.JPG

add a red line to make sure..

DSC_0233.JPG

Ya, it's still an hourglass.. :( maybe I made a mistake here, I should have put on my futtock stave first before I started on the ratlines..

I'm thinking of reworking them, AGAIN! But it won't be in recent time, will seriously need to cool down myself on this..

Anyway, I'm off for a short vacation to Koh Samui, Thailand this weekend for the famous Full Moon Party!!! :D

And on Sunday night, we'll have the largest Moon in the sky this year~!!

Cheers! And hope you guys enjoy your special weekend!

Hello ZyXuz,

I must agree with Mike. It looks neat.

But if you're not happy with it .... Maybe you will see it differently when you come back after your cooling down.

Go and enjoy your vacation first and have fun at the party.

Try to take some photos of the moon if it's possible.

Take care,

Anja

I agree with Janos on the correction.  Druxey recommends doing every 5th ratline first, then do the middles ones between those.  Then do the rest.  Seems to make the hour-glass less likely.  And yep, doing the futtock stave first will help.

I hope you have a great party!

Nice work, ZyXuz,

you can still correct that 'hourglass' shape (which is not that bad anyhow) by pulling the individual ratlines, grabbing them at the first and the last shroud. There is still some flexibility remaining in them and in the knots so those small discrepancies still can be corrected!

Did you think of using the 'cow hitch' instead of the 'clove hitch' at the first and last shrouds? The cow hitch is the same as the clove hitch but the free end is turned in so the ratlines don't overrun the shrouds. It gives a more realistic result. It is up to you though, it looks well as it is now!

And have a good holiday!

Janos

Thanks Janos for the suggestion!

Let me try that out after the trip :)

yea, I've also read your post on the Ratline Riggings topic about the cow hitch.. but too bad at the time I've already half way rigging my ratlines..

certainly will go for it on my upper shrouds :)

Thanks Mike for sharing the great idea!

can't wait to use this method on my future ratlines :)

And I think using this 'skipping' method can make be get boring slower :D

Yea, it will be a great party :D

I will just need to make sure I can still find my way back to my hotel after the party XD

Hi ALL,

I'm back finally.. after 6 hours of torturing journey back... :P

I was real sober after the party (back to my hotel at 3:30am and departed for island hopping at 6:30am :D) but I didn't take too many photo of it..

Anyway, the islands and seaview there are awesome!!

You guys might want to take a visit to there in the future :)

Hello Zyxuz,

I hope you had a good time.

Back at 3:30 and Island hopping at 6:30 again.

That is not much sleep you've had. animaatjes-slapen-89749.gif

Thanks for sharing the beautiful picture of Koh NangYuen.

That is indeed an awesome view.

  • 2 weeks later...

It has been a while after the trip, and a coming church festival kept me busy preparing it since I'm one of the crews... Anyway, here's some updates of my ship.

I removed my ratlines which I think the result is still not satisfying, and decided to put on futtock staves first before I redo them. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Ratlines Removed

Added deadeyes first before starting the futtocks.

Then, I started on the futtock staves. It's done by rigging a blacken copper nail to the shrouds.

However, I did not continue on the ratlines. Instead, I skipped to finish all the stays and topmast shrouds first. :)
I will continue on the ratlines before I put my yards on.

Up till now, basically all the stays and shrouds are done. Next, I will need to put the gaffs on, then only continue back working my ratlines. :)

I Googled it and all I saw was it was off the coast to the norh.  Actually Thailand... ?  I didn't get to Thailand, either.  Still, I remember the airport at Kuala Lumpur, RAF Butterworth, and visiting a host of coconut plantations as well as a lot of sighting seeing and wandering around the capital.   A marvelous 2 weeks.  Maybe I ought to add another visit there to my bucket list?  ;)

yea. it's located in the Gulf of Thailand :)

The airport by that time should be still Subang.. the main one is currently KLIA.

I've never been to RAF Butterworth (although just around 30min from my house :P), but we do have air show annually in Langkawi (I never attended also :D)

Anyway, there was a real incident in Malaysia Air Force

A pilot was about to fly his jet, but the jet wasn't responding.. and when the team checked the jet, it was found that there was no engine in it... ROFLMAO!

:D :D

Yea, you are very welcome!! :) come visit Penang!

Some quick updates ^^

OK, it's time for redoing works.. The Ratlines! Thanks for sharing the methods, the result turned out great! :)

Method Used

Also, I used cow hitches instead of clove hitches at the first and last shrouds.

Total of 392 knots... :D

The feeling doing the last knot of the last ratlines was really good! XD

Hello ZyXuz

I hadn't seen your built log, but it looks great. The boat has become a beauty, and your work looks nice and neatly.

I really loved to see how you have made the captain cabin. I want to make one to in my boat, and now yours is a good example for me.

I see you haven't finished it yet, so I love to see it finished. Go on with building, your are a great builder (I can learn from ^_^  ;) )

Cheers  ,

Hi ALL,

Thanks for your kind words :)

Nick,

Glad that you like my cabin. ;) Doing miniature like those is all about patient :D

Your Hermione is a larger ship, so you'll have more things to fit it the cabin  ^_^

Maybe you can make one figure of Emma Watson in the cabin, since she's Hermione in Harry Potter :D :D

(I don't know y I've came out with that idea, maybe I just love her so much :P)
