thanks Robert and Piet :)    yes,  it was a fun project.   at the moment,  I have the trawler Syborn and the Half Moon sitting on the main table...the Norden is still on the table in the spare room.  I was think'in about these two....the half Moon......I'm debating whether or not to order the triangular dead eyes for her...she might look terrible with the round ones.   the Trawler Syborn.....I decided not to use the life boats,  and have her sporting the life raft bins.  I ordered a package of four from Billing USA,  but they are too small....I need to order the larger ones.  so the probability meter went into the red for these two.  I'll think further about what to do next.......I'll have something on the table soon  ;)

thanks Mark.......happy to report that the Norden is in the living room!.....off the table!!! :)   I still gotta expand the existing shelving I have up......or put up a new one,  but it can wait till it gets warmer.  I'm finally straightening up the inventory bin,,,,throwing out junk from past projects {that I'll never use again},  and relabeling the bottles {bins} so they will be less confusing.   I was getting very tired of searching for what I'm looking for.   I also need to come up with an organizer for all those eyelets I had found a while ago......I really need to do something along the lines of a passenger liner,  to use them up!  I have soooooo many!!

the main table is still cluttered with the two ships.   I will take care of them after I do what I want to do next.....nothing too crazy,  I assure you  ;)

thanks again for all the kind comments and to those whop hit the like button :)

thanks Tom......sorry for the delay in replying.   I have been caught up in getting our car ready for state inspection.....I so envy the states that don't have it.  I still have to put up another shelf.....hopefully to have a place to put other boats I'll finish this year {wishful thinking}.   the Norden was a fun little build....I also got to do a few additions to it,  which made it a bit more of a challenge.  very happy with the way she turned out :)    worrying over the car.....it left me little time to get into anything else,  except rearranging my parts inventory bin and a few work station adjustments.  the table are now uncluttered.......and I can begin again  :)   I have also decided on the next project.....a little known company,  and their model of a Krabbencutter.  thanks again for the good word........and thanks to all who are still look'in in and hit'in the like button  :)

Hello Popeye. I am a newbie to model ship building, and have finally started to build my Billings Norden, which I bought 3 years ago. I am about to start the planking. Thank you for all your excellent pictures and comments. And thanks to others who posted their pictures - of real live Nordens.  Obviously they are all slightly different - each tailored to individual owners. And so it is, to some degree, with individual modellers. I've really picked up some great tips on this site. I will be bookmarking it and coming back often. Might even have some questions. Thanks again.

thanks Tollyman........you'll find that there are quite a few fishing boats outfitted in this manner.........all geared towards their particular needs.  sailing vessels too.   the biggest draw for me with this model,  was that winch......how does it work?!?!  images on line and you tube videos were a big help with it.   the best find I had was the hair net....I found it in a trailer where I work........all beaten up with dirt and stuff ground into it.   haven't been able to find that same type of mesh........still on the hunt ;)   always here to help.......

Hello Dennis.  Tollyman here, and finally getting back to working on my Norden. Of course I had to refresh my mind by going back to your blog - my go to site - to get myself back into the modelling mode.

I had done one half of my hull planking, then got sidetracked for the past year, and finally got back at it a few weeks ago. So now I have planked the second half, and will be joining them together as my next step. I have sanded and primed the hulls, but will wait until they are together for colored finish paint. Which brings me to my questions.

It looks like you spray painted the hull. Do you mix your own paint, and use an air brush, or is it from a can? If so, what color did you chose. It seems all photographs of Nordens appear to have blue hulls. Also, did you use matte/flat finish, gloss or what? There are lots of color choices with automotive touch-up paint, but it is all glossy enamel. These are presumably wooden fish boats, so I don't think they try to get them with a pristine shiny finish.

I like the fact that you added scuppers. The model doesn't have any, but it is not realistic for a deck of this type to not have scuppers. Did you cut them to any specific scale?

Thanks for any comments.

Gary

hello Gary :)   while I have been known to mix my own colors,  I didn't for this model.   I used Billings Robins Egg Blue,  which is a gloss.......flat black and flat red.  you could go totally with flat colors.......if you like to weather your models,  it would be more realistic,  as most fishing vessels sometimes don't get the maintenance that others do.  I've seen some in different color schemes.......but if I were to do that,  I'd also change the numbers to reflect that it is a different ship.  I used an airbrush to paint the hull,  but the Billing paints that I have are old and didn't perform well.  there are rattle can colors that are really nice...and if you look for them,  you can find them in flats {heck.......just use primers...can't go wrong with that}.   scuppers allow water to drain off the deck....most fishing vessels have them.  if a kit doesn't show them,  then this would be a bit of detail that the kit manufacturer forgot.  research would be your friend here.......and would help to give you a better understanding of the subject.   they don't need to be large either and three would be the norm........one at the center of the deck curvature,  and the other two offset the center to account for rolling and pitching.  glad to hear your still working on your model......Billings kits are really good......I have built many.  thanks also for looking in on my Word Press blog........it's a good feeling to know that they are getting used.  if I can help further,  just give me a shout :)

thanks Halvor! :) feel free to use any of the log you find useful.  it's a fun kit,  and there is some freedom in how you want to fit 'er out.  I generally look at pictures and derive ideas from there.   looking at other logs,  you'll see what I mean about building styles.  create your own style and above all....have fun :)
