Here is where I am at with the masts. Added and tuned parts and painting and weathered them. Painting them is pretty close to painting the hull, a mixtyre of paint, washes (both dark and light ones), sanding and drybrushing. I tried to look at the new mast parts on the real ship to get a feel for how they could look in tone.

supper looking build Matti.......masts look  really nice.   not too many pictures of the deck  lately......refreshing to see it ;)   I noticed the position of the capstan......the location seems more logical.   most ships have them located just after the mid ship....guess they need more elbow room :D    super build......coming along splendidly!

I yam wot I yam!

finished builds:
Billings Nordkap 476 / Billings Cux 87 / Billings Mary Ann / Billings AmericA - reissue
Billings Regina - bashed into the Susan A / Andrea Gail 1:20 - semi scratch w/ Billing instructions

Phylly C & Denny-Zen - the Lobsie twins - bashed & semi scratch dual build

Thanks guys, most appreciated! Yeah Nigel except the masts themselves, the parts are scratched. Landströms drawings are very detailed. I also got a lot of help by looking at Claytons pictures of how he made his Vasa masts.

I might have to remake the mizzen mast as I think its the only one of them not correct in shape (the others are not bad at all). I need to think about it some more.

Matti, the masts look really authentic...... whats your secret on scribing those? ..... it looks like it would be difficult to scribe such a straight

line on a dowel like that...... ( if that's what you did )..... great! idea using the washes too!!..... you do some great  things Matti, and ,  after all you've done on this inspiring build I'm sure you'll have no problems rigging her up. Don't work so hard... Do more modelling!!!! :D :D

Thanks Frank, it's a trick I learned from scratch building in styrene. Use dymo tape, the old hard kind that's used for making labels. place it where you need the groove. Then just scribe with a exacto blade after the tape. First a light stroke with the sharp side then with the backside of the blade. Go light on the hand, so you don't lose control.

For wider grooves you can use a sharp screwdriver, but I think it would be to wide for these grooves. You need a new piece of tape for each groove as the glue will not stick more than once, at least not on wood like this, so buy a few rolls

Not difficult to do but takes a little practice to get used to. And you need to be cautious as always using an exactoblade. Easy to hurt yourself when slipping.

Yeah right now it's a little to much at work now but it's a peak and will settle in a mounth.

Hola Matti,

really nice masts and your tip for making groves is excellent.  I will follow your pictures to learn how to make the rigging, for sure they will far better than the instructions plans.

Small update of the work on the masts: I finally found reference of the mizzen masthead so I redid it, the BB is incorrect in the plans (if I'm not missreading it totally).

Also did the the other parts on the mast heads and now I'm planning for the bowsprit details. The BB original parts are not to bad, but it's easy to make better ones and make them close to the one on the real ship.

As you can see I got the ropes and I toned it down slightlly. I learned from the Fred Hocker that they found no evidence of heavy tarring on her ropes, but of a light tarring.

Excellent work mate B) I am looking forward to seeing how you tackle the tops as there is a mountain of work in those if you choose to make them from scratch

Matti,

Nice update on your masts. You captured the multi piece construction very realistically. What did you use for the mast wrappings?

Here is where I'm at with the masts:

First I scratched the front parts for the bowsprit.

Then I started with the first märs and it's is almost finished. As I will add skanskläder later on the sides of it will not be visiable. Therefore I focused on the top and bottom sides.

I don't have the skills to scratch the whole thing and decided to use the main round part is from the kit.First thing I did was to weather and add planks to its top and bottom to make it look more realistic.

I only used two of the kits rings to get it closer to the original proportionwise, otherwise it would far to tall.

As I have some spareparts from earlier I could double the number of parts that hold the rings. I had to remake the taller ones. Also added short scratched details.

All parts where painted with washes before and after assembly and also some drybrushing.

All in all this is made up from 66 parts and I will add a couple of details more and skanskläder and even if it's beyond the kit verion, it's still simplified compaired to the original, so indeed they are quite complicated constructions.

Hola Matti, seeing your topmasts I confirm that the instructions in the Manual are wrong (not so in the plans that the high appear correct).  Unfortunately I already made the lower topmasts of the  foremast and the main mast according the Manual but I will follow your idea of putting only 2 instead of the 3 rings  in the other topmasts.  It will be necessary to make and adjust the size of all the pieces that hold the rings but I don´t think will be a problem.

From now on I will wait your building progress before continuing!!

Nice work....I've admired you progress quietly from the start!  I have always found it challenging to get the angles accurate when the rake of the masts and the angles of the tops are concerned......looks like you have nailed it. ....nice pics.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments and likes!

Nigel, yeah the parts are lasercut from the kit, reshaped. I got my hands on spare sheets for the kit earlier and doubled the number of the parts holding the rings. The small squared parts are scratched.

Karl, I'm sure your will look fine.

Ponto, I agree about finding the right angle, I 've redone the angles a couple of times before it felt right.

Wasn't sure mate,I have a Smit Rotterdam in the loft from a good few years back, the box had the lasercut sticker on,but only the bulkheads were lasercut, everything else was to fret out.I wonder whether all their kit's are fully lasercut now?

Kind Regards
