HMS Victory by GrandpaPhil - Mantua - Scale 1:98 - Kit-Bash

Recommended Posts

My quarterdeck gunports now have frames!

On to the drip shields!

As a side note, I am very happy with how this project is turning out.  I’m very glad that I bought the Anatomy Of The Ship for this build.  Modifications are going well.  I’m not going to mess with the stern or quarter galleries, and I’m using the guns that came with the kit, but everything else is getting modified to the AOTS standard. By the time I get to the Triton, I’ll have plenty of experience.  😀

I made the lower gundeck drip shields and installed them!

They are made from cardstock.  I cut them from the sheets that I made for the port scuttles.

I made sure that I made plenty of extras.

Next, I’m going to scan a picture of the rest of the drip shields (which are different), and cut them out.

Quick lessons learned for everyone, make sure you use sealant on cardstock parts before you cut them out.  It makes life much easier.

Yep there called   wriggles,    they were in two shapes  - one more pointed in the center  and the other more flat on the top with rounded corners.

All wriggles are installed!

Thanks, OC for the right terminology!

Now I need to make some more adjustments to the hull IAW the AOTS outboard profile.

Then I’m going to make the entry port.

Looking good with the extra details  - no problem with the name of the wriggles.

Thank you!

I made some adjustments to my bulwarks and opened up the entry ports.  I have one framed.

I will be making the canopies  after I frame up the other one.

I’ve never done this level of model building before.  So, I am developing much of my woodworking skills on the fly, lol.

I’m having fun with it and learning a lot, which is the whole point of this project.0F82056B-E174-4D0C-966C-034A18C97B9D.thumb.jpeg.3b9f0373022c8bda2d52b4bb5d139b52.jpeg

Really cant go wrong with a build,  be it either wood or plastic - or even a combination of both,   its only limited by our imagination, the skill part comes along with practice (I think).

Still working on the entry ports.

After one massive failure, I realized that I needed to develop my carving skills, and buy some better quality wood to make my carvings from.

Basswood doesn’t hold tiny details very well.

However, I ran through the carving tutorials in the group project, which were very helpful, and I’m going to press on with the entry port carvings.

Outstanding work GrandpaPhil! I really like the gunport modifications. The ones that come with the kit are thin and not particularly scale. All the details you've added are a nice touch. So far I've just painted the inside of the lids red and wasn't sure how to jazz them up beyond that.

I’m still working on learning how to carve.

I’m getting better and I’ll be making another attempt at the entry port carvings in the near future.

I still need some better wood, but I might go with cedar.

I haven’t gotten much done on the Victory for a bit because I’m still teaching myself how to carve.

I’m steadily getting better at it and have been enjoying the learning process.

Tonight, I carved a sea monster off the stern of the British frigate Winchelsea.

I haven’t forgotten about Victory.  I’m about 2/3 complete with the Prince de Neufchatel.

I’ve been learning a lot with it.

I now know how I’m going to make the gratings, the head and the figurehead which were the parts that I was worried about my ability to make.

I’m still working on the Prince de Neufchatel.

I’m in the process of making cannon and giving the Prince de Neufchatel some teeth.

I’ve definitely learned a lot from the build.

I’m still planning on scratch building the rest of the Victory.  I’ve been through the AOTS for the Victory a number of times and I don’t see anything that looks too difficult with the exception of the figurehead, but I’ve been practicing my carving.

We’ll see how it goes when I get back to the Victory.

I’m in the final stages of the standing rigging on the Prince de Neufchatel so I’ll be getting back to the Victory shortly.

Using the Prince de Neufchatel as a learning project has worked wonderfully.

I believe that the Victory will go together quite nicely once I get back to it.

I have other things going on here that are keeping me from the shipyard and my Victory right now too Phil. I have a workshop filled with my lawn and garden machinery (we have 10 acres of land up here and need a lot of stuff to maintain it) that need servicing/fixing. I even have one taken apart and awaiting some valves. Priorities sir........

I understand very well.

I’ve got one and change sails left to make for the Prince de Neufchatel.

I’ve learned a lot building it.  It’s been great training to finish the Victory.

I’m looking forward to picking back up on Victory.  I’m a lot more confident in my skills.

I’m still set on scratch building the rest of the Victory from the AOTS plans instead of using the rest of the Mantua kit.

I’m kind of in a quandary though.  I paid almost $100 for the wooden life boat kits for the Victory from Cornwall Model Boats before I decided to finish the model from scratch.

It would be incredibly wasteful to not use them, but I believe that I can do better from scratch because I scratch built the ones for the Prince de Neufchatel and they came out very well.

Maybe I’ll use the Mantua ones as a base and improve upon them.  I have a while to think about it.

Hi GrandpaPhil,

I have really enjoyed reading through your build log, your attention to detail is inspiring l must say. The change of colour, although scientifically accurate l am sure, is rather disturbing. The commentator said "if the great man himself were here he would recognise the colour" (or words to that effect) which l am sure would be true,............... but l bet he would choose the yellow.

I am looking forward to you starting your victory again in the near future.

Best wishes as always.

The Lazy Saint.

Cedar is a beautiful wood. I had an old cedar tree here on the property that needed to come down. Once I had felled it I gave it to a friend of mine who has a sawmill. He cut me a nice piece out of the trunk that I am going to use as a bench. It is sitting in my woodshop now waiting for me to sand it down. Every time I go in there I can't help going over to it and taking a good sniff :)

GrandpaPhil  good looking build Sir and ambitious one at that The Victory! :imNotWorthy: Now I need to find your other build out there.Wallace I totally agree I have worked with some Aromatic Cedar and it smells wonderful while planing that's one time the vacuum hose does not get connected to the planer. It's been  said that in the ole days cedar was used alot in walls to keep the bugs out  for they do not like the oils in it. ;) Kevin

The Victory is in her new shipyard.

She sustained minor damage in transport, but will soon see progress.

She needs a couple of gunport lids replaced, but I made extras, so no big deal.
