Black Pearl by Old Collingwood - FINISHED - 1/72 Scale

Recommended Posts

I have come up with a plan  -  with the canons breach ropes,  I think I could get away with  drilling through the sidewalls, then tying a knot in the breach rope and pushing the end through the hole in the wall,  this way the  knot will obscure the apperance of the hoops that would have been there on the real ship.

Think its a plan.

Evening all  - more work getting done  - its a busy life as a pirate  "ay mate - weres me rum"    so next step is to build and fit the two canons closest to the cabin bulkhead, reason for these two port and larboard  first  - is so I can then fit the staircases that route down over the top of them.

Each canon assembly is built up from the two sides/bottom/barrel  and the wheel blocks, I assembled the assemblies and painted them  - minus the wheel blocks that still need to be fitted and painted.

Here are two pics showing the work on these two so far.

Hi there all,     more progress today with the first two canons,  I  attached the wheel  units, then  found the correct size breeching rope (looks ok in scale)  I attached it to the end of the barrel and applied a small amount of pva,  then I  drilled through the side walls roughly the same thickness as the breech rope,  I  then rubbed some pva into the ends of the rope to stiffen it,  then to seat the canon to the deck - I cut and glued a small piece of wood from decking stock,  it was then just a case of passing the rope ends through the holes in side walls - and glued the canons down.

When set I will make the rope sag a bit more then dribble a bit of watered pva into the holes.

Thanks mate,  the idea is that a bolt head would have been flat in that area and gone through the wall.

Good day all,    another good day on the pearl,   I   finished painting and weathering the other staircase, and duly fitted it,   I then turned my attention  to the bow where I fitted the two beakhead  rails,   these were firstly  painted and weathered  - then glued in place.

They have good shape so I am quite pleased with them.

If she is like mine she will want you RUNNING the vacuum!

Dumb question I suppose at this point but do you have any intent on adding the faded red sides along the lower gunports that shows in some of the Pictures of the Pearl?

They were from a different film from what I have molded her on lou,  Im building her according to how she was in the second film released.

In the first film she looked quite different  as she did in the  third and forth film,   she had slightly different feactures including a skeleton metal figurehead  and I think the red band around her waist.

What I might do is go over her with a  cake burner  like they use for  burning the top of  lemon meringue pies.............Only Joking.:dancetl6:

That doesn't look much like the kit either! Don't the kit manufactures have ANY respect for "Scale"? But if you blow up the picture you can see that the gundeck band has a slightly red/black color compared to the hull above and below.

That being the case I would think you could do what you want. ( red band, red band, red band, red band):D

No really, your build your vision and choice. She is really looking good.

Evening all,   first day back on the pearl after a short break,  I decided to have a go at the masts - I am using the kit plastic ones  but I am strengthening them on the inside with wood dowels cut to size and glued inside,   this makes a very rigid mast.

Just the one pic showing one of the masts with the dowels glued inside.

Not really feeling much like building at the moment this time of the year is always rough on us,   but  early this morning the wife had a hypo  with her diabetes  brought on and made worse by us choosing between food or heating  - no guesses what we had to choose.

So my motivation is abit  strained at the moment  and attention on my wife due to her new addional health issue to contend with.

Right  - moan over with.

Thank you sincerely,     its always a slightly rough time for us  - between now till next spring,   the cost of keeping the house warm (and the wife)  with her health issues,   it puts such a strain on us impacting her health.

Summer isnt too bad as we can have the heating off - then theres the cost of diabetic foods we are now starting to need,  we cant do both.

She has not had diabetes for long  so the hypo was unknown  ground for both of us, very scary and worrying, and having no medication for her to fall back on was not good.

Its a combination of factors at the moment taht dont help  -  the cold she suffers from/she needs the warmth,  but she also needs the right foods,   both not very easy to obtain  - especially not both.

Like I said - roll on the spring and warmer weather.

Work with the doctors/nutritionists and get foods(not necessarily specifically for diabetics)  that don't cause the sugar issues. I worked for a while as an Emergency Medical Technician and diabetic episodes were nearly as common as heart issues. Diet and exercise, OC.
