I’m planning on an Ark Royal as it has been reissued, but probably not till next year as my aircon died this week and I live on the hottest place on earth (it was 36 yesterday and it’s spring)  my new one gets installed next week. So next year then.

I have resurrected the Emma C Berry by Model Shipways.

Quite the contrast to the sub. Looking forward to watching that build.

Hello Yves,

Great Work!!!

I´m building the same kit since a while, at about 90% finished. Same as you wrote, it is also one of my childhood dreams, since i watched ''das Boot'' for the first time. This is my first proper model to build (but probably not the last, as i experience a lot of fun...) I'm a Type VII-fan, raher than a modeller, at least until now...

You digged up and shared so much backround information,

it helped me a lot, as well as all the hints on how to get it done.... Thank you very much

I hope you do not mind me to copy some of your upgrades...

I remember somewhere in the beginning of your log there was the question raised on the blue lights... I don't know if you have gotten an answer on that,

But i wrote to the engineer and last survivor of the real U96. He told me, that the blue lights where on in the control room at night, while on the surface.

That was done to get the crews eyes used to the dark, before they climbed up the tower to their watch...The red lights where not used for that, only for ''alarm'' and one red lamp above the Diesel engine, lighting up at speed change....

greetings from Germany, kind regards,

Ben

That's a fantastic job Yves. I am also a fan of submarines specially the type VII. Until very recently I had a plastic model in 1/144 scale in my shop but it did not survive my downsizing move. I will follow this built and perhaps try something like this. BTY, I have visited what I think was U550 that is displayed in the Museum of Industry in Chicago. This was, I think, the only sub capture intact during WWII and taken across the Great Lakes to settle in Chicago. A great story.

The U-570, (HMS Graph) a type VII was also captured and later operated by the British in three combat patrols against Germany before the end of the war.

A couple of other U boats were also captured but sank before they could be brought into allied harbors. The U-505 was the only u boat captured by  the US.

I didn't know about the British capture. The journey of U505 from the Atlantic to the Museum in Chicago is an extraordinary event. When the sub reached the Chicago river, across from the Museum, it had to be raised from the water and rolled almost half a mile over the the streets of Chicago. The first photo is the capture and the second of the dry dock that was built to get it out of the water and the tracks that ran all the way to the Museum. csm_U505_3-3.4_8dd039dbb2.jpg.9a1110366fdb0b208f4a6bf03172b85e.jpg
