Hi Guys,

excited to start this awesome project! 

Chuck, I plan to utilize as much laser cut products as designed by you as I can. I will probably be building in Alaskan cedar or what ever other wood may be recommended at whatever point.

My shop space and resources are extremely limited and always on the move so I will be treating this like a kit as much a possible.

Enjoy the project.  I am outsourcing the laser cut bulkhead sets so I just ordered some more.  When they arrive I will list them as in stock.

I really like you model of the Constitution. Your hull an the motell copper is very nice.

You should be proud on what you have done. 

I volunteer at the Constitution Museum two days a week. Your model is equal to many

that I have seen!

Thank you Tim, it’s still under construction. I will start a build log elsewhere on the project so people can follow. I’ve deviated quite far from the model expo kit, it’s been a lot of scratch build.

Have you used the Anatomy of the Ship (USS Constitution). It can be a great reference, 

especially on the rigging and other ship work.

I do have the book, it’s very useful if you are building constitution as she appears now.

Constitution has been restored to Her 1815 appearance. This is based on Her last drydock

period which was 2015 to 2017.

I’m building constitution to roughly circa 1805-12 based on one of cornes paintings. Not sure how accurate I am but it’s turning out well. Need a lot of work on the transom still.

Hi Tim,

thanks for the offer, but I believe the current configuration differs from the corne painting of 1805.

The book has been pretty helpful as well as some contemporary models of the ship.

Made a little progress today, I may end up redoing the head knee, one of the gaps is a little large. Also plotted my drawings out today and the came out ever so slightly under scale!😭

so I need to have some plotted again.

Dry fitted some frames for fun, everything looks and fits well.

Today I got the rabbit strip on along with the bevels and the bearding line. I’m almost finished with my second head knee, we will see how it looks tomorrow, I’ll use the best one. Should be able to start dry fitting all the bulkheads tomorrow and Make any necessary adjustments, if any. So far so good. If anything looks out of place let me know.

Hey guys, slowly making progress on the bulkheads. I’ve noticed a slight banana in the tops of some of the bulkhead former tabs, my build board is holding the keel straight, but is this going to cause a larger problem down there road?

Not really but you could bend them into alignment when you glue the bulkheads into position.  The bulkheads themselves are what is important.  As long as they arent shifting to one side or the other,  the bulkhead former tops can bend a bit.  It actually happened on my model also in some cases.  As long as the bottom of the keel is straight and and the hull isnt twisted you are good to go.

 

those brackets are used for that purpose.

Ok thanks Chuck, I was thinking that would be the case but I wanted to double check. All bulkheads you see are currently glued in place. I did move one of the upper tabs to the center by using alcohol to soften the glue but that’s a messy chore. Once I start the longitudinal framing then I will be extra careful to keep everything straight. 
I was thinking about using my calipers to measure bulkhead distances and then cutting blocks for the bulkheads to keep even spacing at the outboard sides.

Everything is looking really good. I too had a couple of wanders to but it didn't cause any issues. If you read on to the port framing section you'll see that Chuck has you doing just that when you cut the sills to size. When I framed up the ports it worked wonderfully.

Are you guys fairing the bulkheads so the plank lays on the entire surface?

also as you go lower on the bow the plank runs change angle so it’s hard to gauge how much more material to sand off. Any advice?

Yes it should lay flat along the entire edge but that is the ideal situation.  The real important area is the lower bow.  That must be real close or the planking run will be ruined.  Any bump at the bow in those filler pieces will create an optical illusion.  One that make your hull look dented just aft of that bulge caused by not fairing the lower area of the bow fillers.

So I’m  it sure how close this angle is to what the actual plank will lay but it appears I have a lot more material to take off W and the filler blocks.

If you see laser char on the edges you are not done yet.  That is one of the few good things about laser char.

Just keep on as you're doing. Sand some, check the lay of the plank, sand some more and keep repeating

until you get a nice lay of the plank. If you take off too much it can be built back up but if you keep

checking the run of the plank you should be fine.

Think I’m pretty good on the stbd side, planks seem to be laying down nicely. I may have to make some minor alterations at the Lower bow after I start the upper planking down to the whales. At that point I’ll have a better idea of the actual runs of the lower planks. There’s very little signs of laser char left and where there is char, the planks are laying down nicely.
