That’s about it for the hull fittings.

Now to work on the stern.

Thank you very much for all the likes and for stopping by!

The hull is done, so it is now time to make the deck fittings.

Hannah only had a few deck fittings by comparison to Victory or even the Prince de Neufchatel.

I started with the stop for the bowsprit and the hatches with gratings over them:10717928-2987-4C02-84C2-3057AFDFC46C.thumb.jpeg.93454c113366ef070d1f3ad4245a54b0.jpeg

The stop is basswood, the hatches are posterboard and regular printer cardstock.

Once these are done, I’ll make the hatch going into the lower deck area and the deckhouses.

All will be painted a forest green as in the painting I am using for reference.

Once all immovable fittings are done, I’ll ink the deck with an Army Painter Strong Tone wash.

The deckhouses and binnacle are in the process of being detailed.  I am cloning Hahn’s method, just with posterboard instead of veneer.

There really isn’t that much to this model.  I still need to make one more hatch, a windlass, a ship’s belfry with bell, two pumps, a stove pipe, four small carriage guns, 10 swivel guns, 2 anchors and one ship’s boat and the deck will be complete.  That sounds like a lot, but it really isn’t, especially next to the Prince de Neufchatel or the Victory, and especially mostly made out of card.  I’ve just been running really short on time lately.

Thank you.

I am having a lot of fun building Hannah.

This is my second scratch build.

I built the Prince de Neufchatel from the plans in the Chapelle books.  I am trying to refine my methods that I used there.  I made the discovery that I have a lot more fun building from scratch than I do building a kit (it is much more satisfying too).

I used it as a learning project so I could improve my skills to finish the Victory as a bash, instead of out of the box.  It has worked beautifully.  I will hopefully finish the Victory next year.

I tried several new things with this build than what I did with the Prince de Neufchatel.  I made the impression of there being a second deck.  I made an actual stern instead of cutting off the hull covering and bulwarks and gluing on a transom.  The corrugated cardboard worked like a dream.  I didn’t have the twist in the hull that I did with my earlier models.

I used many of the same methods for my deck fittings that I used with Prince de Neufchatel.  The binnacle is nearly identical to the one I made for Victory.

I will use the same method of carving my cannons and making the gun carriages, that I did with Victory.

Hopefully, this project will be done within the next couple of months and I will get back to working on the Victory.

In other news:

The belfry is drying because the bell keeps breaking off.  I started on the last hatch and I resized and printed off the plan for a cutter out of my Victory AOTS book.  I’ll carve a blank out of it and build it with the shell method, using card instead of wood.  I also cut out the supports for the windlass which are just laying on the forward deck in the top picture.

I still need to make four carriage guns and ten swivel guns, two anchors and chain plates.

I am planning on using a bunch of leftover deadeyes and rigging blocks from my bits box to rig Hannah.

For those who would like to try this method of construction.  I used a generic dowel rod that I squared off and then turned into an octagon.  I then cut a groove in the center to simulate the gear in the middle.  I drilled holes for the posts used to turn the windlass and squared them off with my scalpel.

1:60 Sailing Sampan Good Fortune (Amati plans)

1:200 French Ironclad Solferino (Orel card kit)

1:72 Colonial Schooner Hannah (Hahn plans)
