A brief interlude:

I was telling my wife, Julie, how I wanted to go with a planking model after the Pauline. Yesterday this was under the tree!

Not only does she support my hobby, but she also listens to me. 😆

Happy New Year!

I painted the hull white, marked the waterline and painted the bottom. The rudder and propeller has been installed. Now, I am preparing the timber heads that will be installed around the inner bulwarks.

Paul, I just caught up reading through your build log, and if this is your first build - well, my hat off to you!

You are doing a fantastic and nice job. The dory shouldn't give you any problem.

I painted then cut the timber heads to the instructed length.

IMG_2306.thumb.jpg.fd2477f5536aa2a7959603129200d83b.jpg

Next step was to glue the timber heads to the water ways and against the bulwarks. The instructions stated that the timber heads should be perpendicular to the waterline, not the deck. I tried my best.

Here is the starboard side:

IMG_2310.thumb.jpg.b23ea464d23d81838136f3a133014e37.jpg

I needed to cut the excess off the timber heads, so that they would be even with the top of the bulwarks. I used my Dremel with a cut off disk.

Next, I had to do the same with the port side.

And the timber heads are in place.

Hi All - A quick update.

I have painted and attached the cap rails, buffalo rails, breast hook and the pins/assembly for the fore mast stays. This assembly was supposed to be painted black, but in all the images of the Pauline I've seen in it's various stages of life, including the instructions, it's always white. So, I painted it white.

Now it's on to the deck structures.

Looking good, Paul.  There are a lot of relatively small laser-cut pieces to the pilot house, so take your time.  On the display model in the gallery, I left the roof off.   I reduced a copy of that Raquel Welch poster from "One Million Years BC" and hung it over the bunk in the captain's cabin.

@alross2 Thanks Al. I thought that poster looked familiar. 🙂  I want to do something like that as well. I’m also looking for a tiny coffee mug. I’ll definitely take my time. It’s been a fun build so far.

Didn't want you all to think I was idle. 😂

I am working on building out all the deck structures. Currently working on the pilot house; priming and sanding before construction. In the following image you can see the forward hatch, companion way, hatch covers, pilot house deck and the pieces I'm sanding and priming.

I just found and read through your log this morning Paul.  You're doing a really nice job on the Pauline and progressing nicely.  I like that you provided a historical summary of these carriers as it breathes life and interest into the model.  I have always found these old carriers to have remarkably graceful hull lines and I'm sure your model will turn out great, as did your Red Baron (sitting pretty on the mantle).  Keep at it.

The instructions and BlueJacket say that the pilot house is a complicated build and that I should take my time. At least for me, this turned out to be true.

Many of the laser cut pieces are very delicate, so I did spend some time repairing pieces that I broke. That being said, I'm pretty happy with my progress so far. I still have several steps left before the pilot house is complete.

IMG_2364.thumb.jpg.1f6fd6a1a4e447a56727aaf1261be043.jpg

I added a sheet, spread and pillow to the captain's cabin. Since, the vessel was launched in 1948, I added a picture of Marilyn Monroe from 1948.

Here are some other images of the pilot house after painting and completing the cabin roof and pilot house roof, both of which are removable to enable seeing the detail inside. Also you can see the window frames and doors in the foreground, that I am currently working on.

@alross2 Thanks Al! I'm finding the challenge both rewarding and sometimes frustrating. But, afterall, it's my second build and I'm learning a lot!

Here's another update.

I am finished with the pilot house and stairs. I added the doors, lights, compass binnacle, wheel, engine controls, window frames, stairs, shelves, chart table and the antennas. The instructions suggested that I paint the antennas silver, but all the images I have of the original Pauline show them as white. So, that is how I painted them. The door on the starboard side is attached in the open position.

The pilot house was challenging for my skill level, but I am happy with my results. It's not perfect, but most of the wooden work boats that I have seen aren't either.

Now, I will start with the masts, booms and rigging.

Hi to all following this build.

I haven’t posted in a while, but I’ve been working steadily on “The Pauline”.

I’ve been busy getting my full scale boat ready for the season! We splashed last Thursday. The weather for Memorial Day weekend set us back a bit, but we’re in the water and looking forward to the season.

As far as “The Pauline” goes I am getting close. I have all the deck features built and mounted, now I have to rig her and I’m going to be adding some additions based on some photos I have of her.

Thanks if you guys are still following.
