BIG display case!

So, I am within 6 months of completing the Jotika Victory...after 12 enjoyable years! Having now to think of display. We don't live in a mansion, just a 3 bed semi, and I was wondering what others have done? The length will be some 1700mm or so. I am thinking about building a shelf unit in an alcove, then putting the model on 2nd or 3rd shelf up. I would then screw an acrylic panel over the front to seal the dust out. We can then use the remainder of the shelving for other purposes. Does that sound possible?

Then I have to wonder what to do next....what comes after the best!

Your plan sounds reasonable to me.  I've seen at least one or two done like that.

This is far short of being a case - dust will still have easy access to the model.  If you are contemplating a shelf wide and long enough to fit the model it only takes a few inches more to fit a case with the model inside.

Couple of problems. Firstly, we simply do not have the space to walk round it! Houses in UK are not that big. TBH, it would cost as much as the original kit to get a suitable case. I can still foresee sealing thespace, and having LED lights around the perimeter. Be interested in seeing any other 'built in' cases? Thanks all for responding, keep 'em coming!

Care has to be taken to keep dust from entering the enclosed space, and that will happen if care isn't taken. On the other hand, it is also good practice to allow some small amount of ventilation to allow air to circulate. This helps prevent acidic deterioration. Lastly, when providing for lighting, if any, take care to avoid heat buildup in the enclosed space. This is very important! a couple of forty watt bulbs can create a lot of heat and that can, over time, cause damage to a model. (I've restored a couple with significant deterioration from this mistake.)

Also, in designing a "built in" cabinet, allow for easy access to the model from time to time. Don't be surprised if you have to remove a cobweb or three now and again if an enterprising spider finds your model a cozy home.

Should be able to avoid the heat problem with some LED lighting.

I understand your dilemma.

I was thinking of repurposing a coffee table, something still usable as a table with the ship built in.

However that ship is the size of a large family sized dinner table, and at that it would probably not fit out any normal sized door, without complete disassembly.

I also thought of how great it would be to build that case.

Any reasonable case that size would cost more to ship than could be imagined.
I do guess if you make an upper and lower shelf you could very easily build the lights right in, along with a door, no matter it’s hinged or not, could still be basically dust proof.

Good luck with your plan.

We need a display case section, there are several cabinet makers on this forum.
