I am kind of having that old itch to build a ship model kit. But it seems all the ones I look at, I have looked at a dozen times in the past and none get me excited. Does anybody know of any newly released kits? Preferably higher end. Sorry if this has been discussed, I tried a search for "new kits" but didn't turn up anything.

You are more than welcome to join the latest group build of Winchelsea here on MSW.  It is certainly a High end model.  It is basically a kit with 95% of all pieces being laser cut but you have to mill your planking strips so you will need a hobby saw.   We have over 55 people building it as a group here. It is a 1/4" scale 32 gun English frigate 1764....

I would consider it an intermediate to advanced kit....or somewhere in between.  But you can ask the folks currently building it.

You wont see detail like this on any other commercial project if you compare the headrails and quarter galleries and  transom details and deck fittings etc.

Its POB....check out the build logs here

Thanks for the replies guys. Chuck, I am afraid your Winchelsea  looks a little above my pay grade. I guess when I said higher end, I was thinking along the lines of high quality components ready to be finished and installed. My tool set amounts to little more than a couple files and some xacto blades, which is in keeping with my manual dexterity.

As for what I would be looking for, perhaps a yacht from the early 1900s such as the Bluebird of Chelsea, and since I am fantasizing; with high end wood and fittings. I don't see myself tying any more ratlines any time soon.

Unfortunately, that is a niche that is not being filled by kit makers.

Skipper1947,

Unfortunately, the kind of subject you're looking at is more along the lines of what RC kit manufacturer produce. Those tend to have ABS plastic or fiberglass hulls. But, they often use some nice wood and brass parts for the details.

The steam yacht Medea comes to mind. Dean's Marine makes a kit.

Another is the Amati kit of the 1930s yacht Dorade.

Or maybe Mantua's kit of the yacht Bruma.

Don't know if that's any help. But these are the only kits I can think of that are even close to what you might be looking for.

Shame you don't want the ratlines, but this is a yacht ;)

Can also be built with very basic, standard tools. Lots is pre-cut/pre-fabricated, engraved, and from pearwood. You can see a build log in my signature, and the instructions are downloadable to see first, from the website.
