HMS Revenge 1577 by GrandpaPhil - 1/64 - CARD - from Victory Models Plans

Recommended Posts

Thank you very much!

The trick with card is to preshape everything before gluing.

The card will retain its shape.

For round pieces that need rolled or to take a sharp curve, I run it over the edge of my desk to break down the fibers, kind of like using scissors to curl ribbon.

This model is POB.  I just traced the parts from the plans, copied them a number of times, to layer them up, and pretty much just treated this like a wood model.

I am using this one to try out new techniques and see if I can finish it.

The hard part for me has always been getting a hull.

But, I have that now, so there should not be any overwhelming difficulties remaining.

The port side is second planked up to the waist.

The next step is to trim all planking.

Then gaps need filled, planking needs smoothed out and everything will get sealed prior to painting the final yellow ochre band across the gunports.

The rest of the ship will have the geometric patterns that galleons of that time period were known for.

I’m starting to appreciate how large of a project this model is going to be.

I’ll have to find a place to put it when I’m done with it.

Quick lesson learned: I much prefer vertical planking and then applying the wood grain, it works much better than this has.  The only drawback is that one must account for the 1mm difference in thickness on the planking when tracing bulkheads.

Your model is going to look splendid. I Just thought you might like to see a picture of one I made, of the same Matthew Baker design. It's only about a foot long. I found the only way to do the geometric patterns was to paint the planks first, before putting them in place. Even then, it was quite fiendish.

Another pile O’ parts:

IMG_7305.thumb.jpeg.50781d77c98373c7e7ad291e13326204.jpeg
These are the rest of the upper deck pieces and stern castle pieces, plus stag horns and cleats.

Yes, I am making the cleats out of popsicle sticks.

The popsicle sticks (aka craft sticks) are higher density wood than basswood.

They actually work quite well for that.

They’ll be drilled out for pins before being shaped to prevent splitting.

I’m kind of worried about making the stag horns from card, but once sealed they should be fine.

Made my cleats:

IMG_7369.thumb.jpeg.7ab69e5b3f85829b15e0b0774eb5a554.jpeg

For those who would like to make their own, I began by tracing them onto tracing paper, and then copying onto normal paper.

I glued them down onto popsicle sticks, which are higher density than basswood (basswood is equivalent to lime wood for those in Europe), and the right thickness.

IMG_7363.thumb.jpeg.88d16c9fdd36ae431343dab9046c1aab.jpeg

I drilled holes through them to allow for pinning:IMG_7364.thumb.jpeg.200dea895e74df881d832cfc1a82f015.jpeg

I put the radii in with a drill:

IMG_7365.thumb.jpeg.6bb359f61e961b0db3cc92db06d24d1b.jpeg

Then I trimmed them to size after cutting them apart with a razor saw:IMG_7366.thumb.jpeg.0b5bc7faec0ba4a968b65e718c3ea991.jpeg

Next, I cut grooves with a razor saw along the narrow part of the base and trimmed the excess away with a scalpel:IMG_7367.thumb.jpeg.85a27c28f1dfdf5385559c3944844c11.jpeg

IMG_7368.thumb.jpeg.983af78f350e53834cfbc7d149dc7d18.jpeg

Last, I final shaped with a scalpel.

I essentially assembly lined the whole process.

Making staghorns:

6 down, 2 to go!

My building order is not as haphazard as it seems, as I trace pieces to avoid wasting tracing paper, I’ve been making the pieces.

So far, I am quite far ahead on my fittings.

The interior bulwarks for the main and quarter decks are made, painted and drying in place.

IMG_7389.thumb.jpeg.78300fa772fd7d94becfad0b64f59720.jpeg

They still need trimmed into place and some touch ups will need to be applied.

I am not as precise as the laser cutters these parts were designed for.

I have an approximately 2.5 mm (0.3%) error built into the model at this point.

This introduces some gaps in some areas and pieces that needed reduced in other areas.

But, I can live with that.

I’ll take some side on shots later, after everything dries.

The transom is made:

And installed:

I think that my next diversion/tangent is going to be to carve the stern decoration, when I go off on a tangent again.

I have some cedar grilling planks that I found a while back.

That will be a good source of cedar for me to carve for this one.

The stern piece glued to a cedar grilling plank and awaiting carving:

I will draw the upper layer on there once I get around to cutting that out.

In the meantime, I am prepping the forecastle inner bulwarks.

The interior of the bulwarks are done:

IMG_7528.thumb.jpeg.86d2a2674a3a5da9d2a4c87da5f1a718.jpeg

Next step is to finish the second planking, seal, and then paint that last band across the gunports.

Then it will be time to start applying the geometric patterns that this era is known for.

The first round of hull decorations is on:

IMG_7589.thumb.jpeg.eded62bb4363aac5c6cba367dc7ada96.jpeg
I realized that I have a lot of paint touchups that need done and many gaps to fill.

That will be the next step.

I need to make gunport sills.

Once those are in place and painted black I will seal the entire model.

Then, I’ll paint the yellow ochre stripe across the gundeck on back onto the Admiral’s walk.

Then, I can complete all hull decorations.

After that I need to make my big stern carving, which will probably be made in three to four different pieces.

Once everything dries, I am going to finish the painting of the hull itself (read the yellow ochre stripe across the gundeck).

Then it will be time to add the rest of the hull decorations!

The Army Painter Strong Tone quick shade has been added (that’s what created the antiqued patina to the lower hull):

I’ll add the highlights once I get the rest of the hull decorated.

The Revenge is starting to look like a galleon:

IMG_7607.thumb.jpeg.805ce79f249cfe5a003271113652a95d.jpeg
The hull decorations are approximately 50% complete.

There are still multiple wales, and the Admiral’s Walk doors, to install and then there will be many touch ups to make before all this is sealed and highlighted.

Important note: the pattern work is all cutouts that came with the plan set.

I wish I could paint that well two-dimensionally.

The Port Side hull decorations are on:

IMG_7611.thumb.jpeg.73a7ec8507659ff70d2096a336461187.jpeg
The hull needs a bunch of minor repairs and some touch ups.

I also want to make two more pieces of trim on each side because I think it would make it look better.

Then this side needs sealed and highlighted.

I am pleased though, this looks like an Elizabethan galleon now.
