John…I’ll begin by posting some pics of McKay’s last clipper, Glory of the Seas. You can see the curved  hood just above and behind the figurehead and under the bowsprit.  This devise is described on his ships. And it is nearly depicted on all his clippers. It is what reinforced the stem and cut water.

Yes… the naval hood looks great. However, have you found any references of this feature being on the Red Jacket? I have not. I would like to be as accurate as I can to her launch in 1853. That’s why I’m using the Bluejacket plans vs the Marine Model Company’s Plans.

John….. I don’t want to mistakenly miss lead you or anyone.  The Red Jacket was not a McKay clipper, so I would assume she probably didn’t have Naval hoods. I was pointing out the need for research on these matters,  Flying Cloud was a McKay clipper and I might have erroneously confused the two in my eagerness to encourage good research.

You have performed very well in contouring the solid wood hull.

That little Red Jcket is looking extremely well.  Nice attention to detail and good wood working quality/skills.

 Bluejacket is great!!!

I would love to visit Bluejacket someday.  I live not far from I-95, so it would be about a 4 or 5 hour drive. I have never known a bad kit from them.

Nic,

I have several out-of-production Bluejacket kits, including the Half Moon, the Cabot, and the Flying Cloud.  Are you planning on reintroducing any of them? There are several of us who would love to see this!

Your Red Jacket looks absolutely beautiful on the pedestals.  It's amazing what skilled hands can do with a vintage solid hull kit.

BTW, I think I saw your Red Jacket as an in-progress model on a video of the 41st annual Northeast Ship modelers Conference I recently saw.

Looking forward to more "delicacies" from your workbench.

Hi,

We looked at some of our older kits. We did re-introduce the USS Perry (similar to Cabot) and we have the Red Jacket to replace FC. Otherwise, no plans.

Nic,

How similar is the Red Jacket to Flying Cloud?

Very similar - they are both 3-masted extreme clippers. Arrangement of deck furniture is a little different.

FC - 225 ft, built 1851 Boston by McKay

RJ - 251 ft, built 1853 Rockland by Thomas
