She is quite lovely isn't she. I think I like the exterior version with all the arrows, much more interesting with all those extra bits.

A bit of progress…

I worked on the Main Deck (bow section) tonight.
IMG_4637.thumb.jpeg.1d1eecd86f02e109cedeb8ba49f6fc97.jpeg
Tracing the deck line for a template.

Cut out the template and draw the outline of the bow section on 1/16” plywood.

Cut out the plywood…

Glue and clamp… Bow section complete. I will be planking the Main Deck once the structure is completed.  The upper decks were covered with canvas, which I will simulate with paper and gray stain. No need to plank those decks.

I see the bow is “working out” quite nicely. Always good to find a use for a bit of weight lifting ironmongery.

 John, regarding the winch.

I suggest that once you determine the frame dimensions that you draw those dimensions on card and cut out the winch footprint to give yourself an idea of the boundaries you'll be working in. Rough guess on my part, at 1:96 scale, I think the frame footprint to be approximately 1.25 L x 1.0 W inches not including the four friction drums. Then start thinking on how to create the winch elements out of simple materials, card or styrene for gears and the two gear guards, eye pins for shaft bearings and levers, dowel for shafts and friction drums, 16 or 14 gauge wire for shafts, smaller wire for levers and rods, small dimensional wood for the frame.

That's a lot of elements to cram onto a very small space. The goal is to suggest the whole without replicating each individual piece, IMHO.

The below is the hole punch set I have that I used for punching the gears out of card for my Donkey engine. They're very inexpensive and when they get dull, replace em!

It's quite a complicated thing isn't it. I assume it had many uses including powering the forward derricks as well as anchors?

Thanks Keith…

I have been trying to wrap my head around this task. Your suggestions are very helpful.

I have found a Bluejacket piece that could work as a base and have been pondering 🤔 modifications.

5/8″ x 3/4″ (1/8″ Scale). Priced per 6 pieces. $7.66
IMG_4700.thumb.png.ca8ee333415d6d48269874d429c7cba9.png
I do think your suggested size feels more appropriate and I can build it to look more correct than Bluejackets “Liberty” winch modified.

John, were I you I'd have bought that the moment I saw it. For $7.66 (you spill more than that on a good night :)) it's a steal. Yes, there's satisfaction in building something like the winch from scratch but..... if that Bluejacket piece comes close to working out it'll save you at least a weeks worth of work. And if nothing else you could rob it for pieces parts if you decide to build the winch from scratch. In that case buy two.  I think that's an awesome find, I'd jump all over it.

It doesn't appear the winch on the model in post #8 is close to being the correct winch? Who looks at that model and say's "well, nice model but that winch."

Amazing, I was having this exact same thought. I’m sitting here right now putting together an order for cleats and pieces I need for my 1/16 scale Red Jacket as well.

Thanks for chiming in… 🍻 I’ll try not to spill any thing… LOL 😆

John,

This is  a long shot, but you might find a patent for the winch in the US Patent Office archives. When I was working on the OK City model I found the patents for a couple of winches there, along with patents for the entire Talos missile launching system! Hundreds of drawings and detailed descriptions.

Search for Biefort and winch -  I think that is the name in the photo you show.

John, the winch turned out looking spot on. You did a great job working at scale to replicate Klondike's winch. 👍

John, noticed (again) your build which I must have forgotten to "follow" at the time. Looking great! Winch is excellent.

Those interior photos on upper deck and wheelhouse are very interesting. When I was there only the main deck was open to be wandered through, due to ongoing renovations.

Looking forward to seeing more of your build!

Thanks Keith… To be fair to Bluejacket, had I built the winch they casted it, the parts were done quite well. It was my Hacking of the parts to build the Klondike’s Winch, that roughed it up a bit. Thanks for your comments, I think it came out quite nicely for my first attempt.

Cheers🍻
