seems it’s just you and me making regular updates

I’m still here with chapter 12 underway, I’ve been out of the country exercising my other hobby of photography. I’ll be back at it soon. You aren’t alone.

Regards,

Glenn

Question: are all the stern frames to be level with each other

The templates are your friend and guide along with the windows frame filler blocks. A large rubber band helps hold things in place until it’s time to glue. As Ben says, it’s critical to get it right now as it affects all to follow. As I’ve offered earlier looking at multiple other build logs at this point is very helpful.

I have been working on this since July 1, I have measured, remeasured, checked and rechecked, read lots of logs and Chuck's instruction and worked daily to make meaningful progress. Before I move ahead with the remainder of the stern framing I wanted some other eyes to see it and let me know if there are things I need to fix before going further. Thanks for your help.

It looks good but its impossible to tell in photos if any minor issues would cause you grief.  It looks good…keep going and if they arise we can deal with them. But remember to have fun along the way.

Thanks Chuck,

I have so much admiration for you and the other awesome builders here and earning their respect puts me under pressure to do things well. So a reminder to relax and enjoy the journey is appreciated. I will try and do both. I got the remainder of the qgallery framing done today. The pieces were measured off the plans and went in without having to be pressured into place and were square.

I have completed Chapter one, it took me four months, only 11 chapters to go. I faired the inside of the bow, made the bollards and installed them, then started on Chapter 2, aligned the batten and marked the bulkheads in preparation for planking the first layer of wales. I temporarily laid out the planks for the lower counter, by placing pins on the stern frames to keep them in place. what i can not figure out is exactly where the first plank should be laid. There is nothing in the plans that show the counter planking, and I could not find any instructions of where to start them. I looked at several build logs and found no measurements listed so I tried to guesstimate the location based upon the photos in the build logs. Do they look correct to the members who have installed them on Winchelsia.

Thos logs should so there is an upper counter that meets the lower counter at that angle bend on the frames. Hard to know from photos but it seems your’re a bit low. Try a temporary plank for the upper counter, they have to match up. Maybe look later in other logs or a few pages ahead in the monograph to see the finished look.

also keep in mind the planks have to curve to meet the lower counter. Your angle for that and the filler as you have it might make that tough. This is a challenging area, worth it to get it right.

I'm closing in on four years…its a process.

Glenn

i have been working on planking the wales and above the wales for a month and needed a break, so I printed off a color copy of the friezes for the stern. Looking at them I thought I would try and apply some iridescent gold paint to see if I could enhance them. I painted the left side and not the right so you could compare the before and after. This was just an experiment, I have not decided if I will actually do it. I have painted birds that I have carved for years and I am accustomed to painting very fine feather details, but do not know if it would be appropriate on a boat. Looking at the other friezes that go by the gun ports there are some details that I could enhance  with painting but maybe I should leave well enough alone. Thoughts?

I am always in favour of more painting so give it a try you have nothing to loose painting onto the paper. Just painting over it will give it a more natural look than a printed design will. If it doesn’t turn out well you can always default to just using the printed version.

My friezes look great as they are printed then sprayed as described in Chuck’s instructions. I’m not sure how paint on paper would hold up over time, but then I’ve never tried it. I was skeptical of the paper friezes at the start, but now two-three years since I applied them I’m more than happy with the result.

However it’s your model and you should do as you wish, conducting experiments is always a good plan.

Glenn

It has been 6 months since I last posted but I have been diligently working. However, Chapter three took me a very long time. It is very detailed work and trying to do it with just one hand created a lot of challenges and i ad repeated do overs in the process. The final product is not without flaws but it the best I could muster. I simply do not have the capability to be as precise as the masters that exist on this site. Nonetheless, I really enjoy the challenge.

Looking really good.  Dont sell

yourself short,  this is not an easy beginner model.

Chuck

Thanks, This has been a very rewarding journey. There  are some really awesome examples and it is hard not to compare ones work to those, nonethe less completing each task and chapter is so exhilarating that it motivates you to face the next challenge with a smile. Your guidance and others makes it all possible.
