Clan McKay Posted November 22 #1 Posted November 22 Hi Everyone, I just found out I'm related to Donald McKay lol. I've never built a ship replica but would like to. Anyone recommend a kit for one of his ships that's easy for beginners? Also, I'd love to hear about any cool McKay antiques anyone has. CPDDET Posted November 23 #2 Posted November 23 I know he was famous for building clipper ships, the most famous being the Flying Cloud. But these types of models are far beyond the skills of a beginner, in my opinion. Still, I did start my ship building with the schooner Bluenose and managed a decent model. I would think he must have started designing small craft and worked his way up to the big clippers so a deep dive into his life will probably be necessary. Several years ago I spent hours walking up and down the hills of the old cemetery in Newburyport MA. looking for Mr. Mckay's grave. I was about to give up when one of the grounds keeper came by and asked if he could help. I said I was looking for the grave of the famous Clipper Ship builder Donald McKay. "Oh he's buried in the real old cemetery over across the street." Thanked him and hiked another quarter mile but found what I was looking for. Glad I didn't give up the personal quest. My mother told me im related when I volunteered on the Gotheborg ship. To make up for it I plan on doing a circumnavigation soon. According to Wikipedia and THIS page this may have been the first ship, your GGGGrandfather did build - from idea to launch: The Courier Quote The Courier, the First True Clipper Ship – Built in Newburyport in 1842, 380 Tons Built for the Coffee Trade, often nicknamed the “Rio Trader”; it was the first ship built by Donald McKay in 1842 for Messrs. Andrew Foster & Son, New York. Built at the [William] Currier & McKay Shpyard, Newburyport. (location riverside, along Merrimack Street, across from Forrester Street) The Painting by Charles Robert Patterson, owned by Frederick de P. Foster, whose father and grandfather gave Donald McKay his first commission to construct a ship of his own design. Commissioned by Messrs. Andrew Foster & Son, New York. Though small compared to later clippers, the speed and durability of this one ship gave great notoriety for the young shipbuilder and word spread fast that he had a new, ‘incredibly fast’ design and could produce a reliable product. They have done some scholarly research on several of McKay's clippers. Search the build logs for kit and scratch-built ships with a launch date of 1851-1900. Look for build logs of Staghound, Glory of the Seas, Flying Cloud and Flying Fish. You will find several clipper ship enthusiasts there. By the way, the remains of Donald McKay's last clipper, Glory of the Seas, rests here in Seattle. Unfortunately, not much is left though as she was burned in the 1920's to recover the metal in her hull.
