Hi folks new signee here but not new to the MSW forum , lost all my original email and sign-in PWs from years back, its ok thou admins no need to search not really necessary.

Admin(s) , i am currently in the closing stages of refurbishing a model of a two masted schooner similar to the Emma C. Berry and ship types of that era. Is there a specific area where i can post pics and progress reports for this rebuild/refurbish ?

I built this model about 25 years ago , it sat in my late mother's house for several years and collected many layers of lint ( as it was not in a display case) , when she passed away it was completely dismantled right down to just a empty hull and stored away in a basement.

I retired a coupla years ago and since i have a lot more free time now i decided to dig it out of storage and try my hand at a restoring/refurbishing it to atleast its former glory . Although my eyes are not what they use to be, my model building is somewhat still intact.

Place it in the 1851-1900 section of either the scratch or kit section, as appropriate, and add " - RESTORATION" to the end of the title. You can also tag it as a restoration.

After gathering all the parts that were still available everything was in rather good shape, apart from the captain's cabin as it was broken in half but nothing that a bit glue and clamps couldn't fix, everything else was pretty much cosmedic.

I will be replacing the sliding cabin hatch and some of the furnishings and adding some decor inside to make the cabin look " livable ". Noticed also that the windlass was never fully completed something else to add to the to-do list.

Thanks Rick , couldn't agree more modelling definitely keeps our minds sharp and i thank the Lord that i still have steady hands although at times they are sore , not from modelling but from working part-time as an electrician ( Are electricians allowed to retire ? )

Most dentists die in their chair. I was forced to retire at 75 because my legs gave out and it’s hard to do surgery when you can’t stand. I’m sure it’s the same for electricians. When you are a professional it’s hard to give up a profession you love.

All the Best and welcome aboard.

Got the windlass completed and re-installed on the deck although  not fully satisfied with how it came out but its satisfactory , may revisit it later. The sliding cabin hatch too is completed and re-installed , very pleased with how it came out  especially the new stain color. It consisted of about a 50/50 mixture of "gunstock"" , a rather light redish stain, and "english chestnut" a dark brown, combining the two gave pretty much the color i was looking for.

The rebuild is looking great Lawrence!

Thanks Paul, was browsing through the comments and photos on your SS Wapama build , hadn't realized how late i was to the party. You've come a long ways and your attention to detail is quite amazing, well done.

Cut a slab from the old sliding hatch to make a keg shelf for the captain's cabin , should fit nicely on the wall above the table, thought it would add a bit more realism.

Decided to replace the old hull deadeye "straps" as they didn't look right as they were just pieces of brass wire. Instead i used a piece of aluminum flashing to cut some 1/4" strips about 3" long , bent one end around a small nail to receive the shackle bolt for the deadeyes and sprayed them with some metallic gold, think it looks a whole lot better.

The original live-well hatch was missing so ordered a new one from Model Shipways , it was too small but it was the biggest they had , simple solution was to add some facia pieces to make it fit. After staining it in "gunstock" and adding a handle it looked satisfactory.

Got the spars , sails and most of the rigging re-installed along with some " enhancements ". Added a couple of spar line spreaders to the top gallant mast and replaced some of the blocks and lines. I used Flebing"s dark-brown leather dye on some of the rigging lines to get rid of the "furries" and bring out the color, gave the ratlines another coat of Mars black acrylic paint .

Didn't like the spar hoops as they were just made from loops of wire , so i attempted to make some wooden hoops from a roll of 3/4" pine vineer i bought at the local hardware store.

Using a pair of scissors , I cut the veneer into 1/8" wide strips about 12" long and soaked them in warm water overnite to make them ply-able, wrapped about three turns around some wooden "donuts" i happened to have laying around , ( a piece of 3/4" pipe would be easier to work with ), spread some glue to the side edges ( i'm using gorilla clear glue ) , clamped everything down and left it to dry  out. When the loops were dry i gave them a coat of gunstock stain and i must say they look  a lot better , next step is get them installed some how.

Very nice work! Do you have any photos of the entire model?

Thanks Jacques, as far as i know we can only post build log photos here , completed model photos are to be posted in the MSW forum Gallery but i have a link to a old surviving photo of what the model looked like about 25 years ago .

Finally managed to get the cabin furnishings installed and photos uploaded , prolly should have mentioned earlier that the cabin roof is removable  it makes for a great conversation addition .

Installed the  keg shelf i built earlier , put the wooden donut rings around the inside of the porthole windows and added a ships wheel to the wall , what's a captains cabin without a ships wheel ?

Note : i sanded one side of the rings flat to make if fit better to the wall , there's one laying on the cabin floor in one of the photos below.

Update: Currently working on finishing the rigging and deadeyes that were never completed on the original model , sanded and repainted the anchors , will be replacing the chain as it was a bit tarnished but not bad after all these years.

Thought i'd try my hand at building a working pulley-block from scratch , my first attempt was a total failure as was my second but as they say if at first you don't succeed try try again (may re-visit that later )

Added some railing to the stern area , made from a bicycle spoke and a few 1/8" aluminum rivets thought it came out ok.
