i found dowels hard to get an exact measurement from so i invested in a very cheap micrometer, worth it's weight in gold, with a little bit of thought it can help in all sorts of ways with out hobby

I'll tell you, Kevin.....I've had and used the micrometer for years.  But I just bought one of those digital calipers a year or so a go and it's a dream to use.  And perhaps the best part is you hit a button and switch from fractions to metric to " instantly.  Whatever 'floats your boat' :)

Dan Vadas showed an idea under MSW 1.0 where he adapted one with a rubber band and a small piece of wood to get the measurement under a deck. fpr making columns/pillars

Hi Augie, I am new to this site, and really like what you've done. I am building Revell's Connie, and am at the running rigging stage. Next build, not sure but will be wooden. Maybe Sirene, not sure. Keep up the good work, and your pictures really help whether it's a wood or plastic ship. Great job.

Welcome aboard, Texxn !  I think you'll find there's a lot of info on MSW you can use in your future builds.  Are you going to start a build log on your Connie?  It's the best way to meet folks, discuss issues and pick up tips.  I've been following AndyMechs Connie and he's doing one heck of a job.

There are so many aspects to this hobby and here you can enjoy them all.

I'll look forward to your first log John.

Hi Augie,

Thanks for the response. I have seen more info on this site, than any other I have followed. I took step by step pictures of my build from start to finish of my current build, however after moving to Costa Rica for a year, someone stole my computer which had my pictures and log. I did not know of this site prior to a few days ago. I might be able to get some of the pictures but don't know how good they will be. I plan to start a log from where I am now, which is the running rigging. I have completed the formast, and now start with the yards and rigging of the mainmast. I plan to move to a wood ship when I complete the Connie, which I have just restarted after a "burn out" --- simply trying to do too much too quick by wanting to be at a certain stage before I left the country. Too old for this s...! Look forward to seeing your progress, and I will be posting pictures soon. Been doing this all my life, and love it. I also am following Andy's build. He is aobout where I am, only quicker....youth! lol....Thanks, and keep up the good work....John

Sorry about the mishap with your computer and photos.  That's ok though ---- pick up where you are and by the time you're ready for the next one you'll have a bunch of  contacts.  Glad to have another 'seasoned' member on board.  These young kids (less than 60) are hard to keep up with and they're too darned good :D  :D

With all these questions lately maybe you should start a thread called "Ask Augie".  Your advice and support is great even for those of us not asking the questions.

Hey guys, appreciate all the feedback, thanks Augie for all the good words.   Yes, these kids are good.  Youth does have a lot of advantages....they can do more faster than we can...lol.....I'm in no hurry - obviously, and I enjoy doing what I do on my own pace and schedule.....I have no agenda and things will happen when I want them to.  I want to post pictures, and I might have some old ones tomorrow, and then have to figure out how to post them.  I tried yesterday to post a picture of where I am, and it rejected them because the file was too big, so I am initially confused as to what file size the format will accept.  I can adjust my camera but have to learn how to do that since it is way smarter than I am.  Learning curve again....d*** youth again...lol.  I think you have to be 10 years old to know how to operate today's electronics.   My mind didn't think I'm that old, but everything else seems to remind me.  Keep up the good work, and thanks again for welcoming me into the group......John

TEXANS!  Go ahead....rub it in.  I'll be laughing like all git out in May when you're roasting down there at 100 degrees and I'm just packing away the Under Armor.

Good luck on the photos.  The old MSW used to need small photos but the new system accepts much larger ones.  I'm sure there's a thread on the forum as to how to post photos.  Let us know if you continue to have problems and one of the moderators will set you straight.

John-  check the link above for size info.  As you said, one way might be to adjust your camera.  The other way is to download your photos into your computer then adjust the size using whatever program you have.  That's how I do it so there's no need to play with the camera (I'm all out of 10 year olds around here).

that's what I do........import my pictures and size them down with my photo program.   I used to do them smaller,  but I had a complaint somewhere down the line that they were too small.......so now I size them down by 35%.........they start out over a meg.....but after,   they are only 50 - 60 kb.   they are perfect for my build log bolgs as well. ;)

OK, ok .......you guys and gals are killing me.  Contrary to popular belief, this is STILL a build log.  SO------

Progress on the yards has been a bit slow as life has reared it's head.  However, we have gotten some work done:

The cleats and footrope stirrups have been completed.  The yards themselves have been stained and finished with a few areas of paint to simulate metal fittings. As suggested by Chuck, the stirrups were made from 28 gauge wire rather than from rigging line.  It gives a nice appearance and will provide a solid footing for the ropes for which I will use rigging line treated with diluted PVA.  It's stretching/drying right about now.

I trust this photo will placate Sjors (AKA you-know-who).  I promise to return with more once the blizzard is put to bed.

Phew!! This has probably been one of the more entertaining reads I've had in a while in all respects - and the build is beautiful. A real inspiration. Now that I'm caught up, it'll be much easier to follow along - even though I'm a bit of a late comer to the party. Keep up the great work!

Augie, just curious. Now that you're on the home stretch and your model has turned out as well or better than you could have ever hoped, do you find yourself asking -- "hmmm, I was gonna display it over here out of the way, but now I think I'll put it right on the fireplace mantle or right in front of the main door where everybody is going to see it!"

Good luck with the blizzard. The good news is that this time of year it warms back up quick and should melt off in a hurry.

Not a lot of display space around here that will hold her Eric so, for better or worse, she goes where she goes.  I've got one spot left after that.

A lot of wind so far but it looks to me like most of the snow is hanging up in the hills.  That's where we need it anyway.  Stay warm!
