HMS Victory by Shipyard sid - FINISHED - Caldercraft

Recommended Posts

Hello David,

Glad to see you back.  I hope everything went ok with the hospital treatment.  Fantastic work with your rigging, it sure does get very "busy" in there doesn't it?

It's a pity about the damage to the bowsprit, but consider the damage she suffered at Trafalgar.  According to a report of a midshipman on board:

"The hull is much damaged by shot in a number of different places, particularly in the wales, strings and spirketing, and some between wind and water. several beams , knees and riders, shot through and broke; the starboard cathead shot away; the rails and timbers at the head and stern cut by shot, several of the ports damaged and port timbers cut off; the channels and chain plate damaged by shot and the falling of the mizzen mast; the principal part of the bulkheads, half ports and port sashes thrown overboard in clearing ship for action. the mizzen mast shot away about nine feet above the deck; the mainmast shot through and sprung; the main yard gone; main top mast and cap shot in different places and reefed; the main topsail yard shot away; the foremast shot through in a number of different places and is at present supported by a top mast, and a part of the topsail and crossjack yards; the fore yard shot away, the bowsprit jibboom and cap shot, and the sprit sail and spirtsail topsail yards, and flying jibboom gone; the fore and main tops damaged; the whole of the spare top mast yards, hand-mast fishes shot in different places, and converted into jury gear."

They managed to get her into Gibraltar by October 28th and she was ready for sea again on November 4th 1805. Seven days to get her fit for sea and the return voyage to England!  So repairing your bowsprit in your well-equipped shipyard should be a piece of cake!

Greetings all

Well more progress on the bowsprit. Things went well tonight for a change, and I have completed the braces. So the next task is the braces on the fore mast yards. After reading through the last few pages of the rigging manual it appears there is very little to do on the bowsprit now, only the travelling guy, the guy pendant and the jibboom guy. I am not to sure how I should proceed with these braces as the lifts and sheets are not belayed. So do I belay them first, and then belay the braces or what ? I shall just play it by ear and see how it goes. I surmise there will be a lot tweaking to do later. Anyway we will see. Once again thanks for viewing and your comments. Here are a few photos of the completed spritsail yard and spritsail topsail yard braces. Here we go. DAVID

David,

Your build looks amazing.  How one can follow the runnng rigging is absolutely amazing.  But you are doing it and beautifully I might add.  As i've written to you so many times, those of us following you are so lucky forr your log even though things look like spaghetti to me.  How do you manage to do it?  Again, thanks so much for your contribution to the site.  And best wishes,

Jerry

Hello every one

Well it's now becoming very slow and tedious progress. I have fitted only the fore yard and the fore topmast yard braces over the last few days, and cannot fit the top gallant brace as the break from earlier on top of the mast has become a bit dubious , so I will strengthening the break area later and move on to the mainmast braces now. It gets a bit frustrating at times when you belay a thread and you look back later to see for some reason there's slack that needs taken up. So I move on to fit the braces on the main mast , and the way I am working will prob take a week . Here's a few photos for you. Thanks a lot for viewing and all your comments. DAVID

Greetings all

A little bit more progress over the last few days. I have completed the main mast braces with only a bit of tidying up to do and a few threads to belay. The next task is the mizzen mast which only involves the brace for cross jack yard, as the topmast and the topgallant braces are fitted with the driver gaff. So once the cross yard jack is completed I need to make the driver boom and the driver gaff, and that will take me a few days. So here's a few photos and thanks for your comments and for viewing DAVIDpost-96-0-33310300-1395270019_thumb.jpg

Wow David!  She looks fantastic.  You're really setiing the standard for rigging here.  It's still a long way off for me, but believe me your rigging work will be a "go to" must for tips and advice when I get there.  Keep up the great work.

Greetings all

Well not a great deal of progress over the last week. I completed the cross yard jack brace, you may be able to see that this brace is different to the other braces from the photos. The brace for the starboard side of the yard begins life fast to the main rear shroud on the port side, it then crosses to and through the brace block on the starboard side of the cross jack yard and returns to and through a block made fast to the main rear shroud and belays at deck level. The brace for the port side of the yard simply does the opposite. I then turned to the driver boom and gaff, but alas I have lost a 5mm sheet containing the jibboom and driver gaff jaws. So I have now returned to the front end of the ship and started on the clue lines sheets and tacks ( I have never heard of this before !!! ) anyway the instructions tell me to join three single blocks together to create an assembly which I think is called a garnet strop assembly. Anyway I have added a photo of it and you can decide for your selfs . On the photos you can see the fore yard sheet which begins life fast to an eyelet in the hull. It then travel up through a block and returns along the hull and though the hull side and belays to a large cleat on the upper gun deck. You can clearly see this on the photo of the gun deck, the cleat with the thread on top of it ready to belay. Thanks for putting up with this and for viewing, plus all your comments. Here are some photos that hopefully might help you see what going on, you never know. Cheers DAVID

Nice work, David..I only hope you are managing this fine rigging following the plans and instruction manual.  In other words, i hope it's explanatory enough for thicker minds like mine when I get there.  I never saw so many threads connecting, passing close to each other, running through single, double and tri blocks in my experience.  I will tread lightly.  Please keep it up with plenty of photos.  Take care,

Jerry

Greetings all

Well I have now finished the rigging of the clue lines sheets and tacks, with only the main port to thread through. The next task is the travelling guy, guy pendant and flying jiboom guy. As I have said before I have never heard of most of these things before . Anyway that should be the completion of the rigging according to the manual. I however done no work at all on the driver boom and driver gaff as I am awaiting the small sheet of 5mm which I have lost, and it contains the jaws for both. Here are a few photos of my progress , and once again you can see there is rigging to be belayed on the inside of the ship on the gun deck, you can see the thread on the cleat were it is belayed. There is also rigging belayed on the upper gun deck. Thanks once again for viewing and your comments.. DAVID

Hello Lawrence

Thanks a lot for your post. Yes it's very crowded in there. I have started working my way back tightening the rigging checking and double checking as I go. The foremast is done and I am now tightening up the main mast rigging. I cannot go any further as the parts for the boom driver and driver gaff I lost have not arrived from jotika, but the yards are ready, and there is still loads of work still to do. Good luck if you do add the sails. Regards David

Phenominal work Sid...I am currently starting my work on the HMS Victory as well and will be using yout posting as guide.  I am deeply impressed with your rigging and as you may know, the Heller 1/100 kit instrustions leave a lot to be desired.  Anyway, my question to you is how did you paint the Galleries (rear section) and Bows (front section) of the boat with such prescision.  I seem to never come across a video or step by step set of instructions as to technique.  I am excellent with an airbrush, but paintbrush technique needs some work.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Greetings all

Well not a great deal of progress over the last week. I made up the driver gaff and driver boom, but alas dropped the boom and stood on it , so need to make another one. I had also misplaced the jaws for the gaff and boom so emailed caldercraft for a replacement sheet, but alas no reply so just made them both. I have now fitted the driver gaff and added a few photos of the completed rigging which is not belayed yet, as this will need to be left until the boom is made and fitted. I have also tidied up the bow area ready to finish belaying the rigging, and also need to fit a few parts I had missed which were pointed out to me. So that's me for now, and I would like to thank you all once again for viewing. AvesP I reckon the best bet for you is to to check out the cracking heller victory build by dafi were you will find out all you need to know and more.. Here's a few photos. Thanks a lot DAVID

Could it be that sub -consiously your trying to delay the launch by sabotaging parts or is it just the thought of making that ginormous case .You could always fit sails ??? But seriously David a build to be proud of .Have Fun.                                                                                                                                                                        Boyd

Greetings all

Well here we go again with last stick!!! I have remade and fitted the driver boom, and all it's rigging apart from the sheet which is a simple block linkage from the iron horse to the comb cleat. So that's my lot with sticks and strings for now. Anyway as you can see nothing is tightened of and I have started to fit the hammock cranes which should have been done a long long time back as we all know.. I thought this might have been a bit tricky now, but it seems to be no problem at all. All I am doing is making two frames of mesh and sliding them in position and a dot of glue. You can see the effect on the photos, and I think it looks ok. Anyway as usual thanks for viewing and all your comments. Here's a few photos with one of a side view of the ship... Here we go. DAVID

Greeting everybody

Not a lot to see considering what I have done over the last few weeks. Everything has been tightened off, and I have completed all the netting. I have started adding the coils of thread whatever the term is, and more or less completed the poop deck, but as you can see the netting has been bashed about and needs a good sorting out, plus the two block and tackle on rear of the driver boom has also loosened off. I have belayed the rigging that runs through hull to the cleats on the bulwarks on the gun deck . So my next task is to start fitting the coils around the main mast area. And guess what I have broke off for the fourth time!!!! ?? Yep the pointy end. This time it goes on last, yes I said that once before. Anyway I shall plod on and one day I will get there. I hope!!!!! Here's some photos , and thanks to you all for viewing and comments. DAVID
