thanks for all the likes.......I really appreciate it  :)

thanks Bob.......hulls will always need plans.......no getting around it!   fitting them out though,  there's a lot more freedom.  I like these types of trawlers......I'll see how much I can put into her. ;)   I liked what the admiral told me.......I took the day off!  :D

thanks Pete and John........I didn't plan it,  but the depth of the window frames are the same thickness as the flat stock!  I'm lov'in that! :)

I brought the top section of my tool box home from the shop.   now I need to get it out of the SUV......but first I need to make a rolling cart for it  {it has a top lid that opens}.   all's fun here at the wharf....if I ain't build'in one thing........it's another    thanks all for the good word!

I took Monday off with the idea of putting some mileage on my builds......it didn't go as planned.  I did do a little though,  giving some thought to the funnel.  I have a rectangular block of balsa.....getting an idea of the height,  I cut off about an inch or so.

post-612-0-23812300-1402080197_thumb.jpg

I took it out to the garage........flipped the belt sander over,  and commenced with shaping it.

post-612-0-09511700-1402080417_thumb.jpg

since I bordered out the template for the helm,  and cemented on the front and side walls,  three more pieces of strip stock was laid down within the template,  so a floor can be laid down.   I also cut some wedges to serve as the dash supports.

here is the dash and floor fitted in place.

I'm going to do something with the helm interior,   but with the small windows,  I don't think I'll be going hog wild with it.   I'll save the craziness for the other builds I have on the roster.

I'm assuming you shaped the funnel by eye? Came out damn good!

And the way you're knocking this pilot house together w/o plans is amazing. If you were a piano player, you'd be one of those who can just sit down, without sheet music, and create a symphony!

jeeze........I don't know about that Tom.........I think I'd sound like crap in the beginning! :D    actually,  I think I should have made the upper deck a bit longer......if I add an addition to the helm and incorporate the funnel,  there's not going to be much of an aft deck left.  I'm working out the back part now.....having trouble deciding how to go about it.   even the color has been a toss-up.......would it look good red and white like the lower structure,  or a solid color in keeping with the two tone.    I've made progress with this ........I've had time to spend on her today.

most kit plans that I've used are pretty vague......I only use them as a guide.  I remember the measuring and marking I did when I shaped the Nordkap funnel......I just did this one from memory.   I still need to trim and fit it.  thanks for the good word......there is a bit of freedom that I'm enjoying with this build  ;)

thanks for the like Bob!  :)

I have some very flexible flat stock on hand Augie........I'll fashion out something......perhaps get it wet for shaping.  I might even trim it down a little to make the top surface bigger......still more to do on it  ;)  thanks Augie

yes Michael.......lots of projects.  I have resisted from making any more hulls,  until at least a couple of these are done.  but I'll be honest though......I do have ideas for another build......or two.  doing my best to fight off the urge ;)

yes Pete.......plans are good for the ideas derived from them........but the research fills in the blanks  ;)  thanks for the good word!

I have a few pictures from last Friday.    the floor of the helm is planked after the lower part of the inner walls were painted.    this is an argent gray.   the floor has been sanded.

post-612-0-81487300-1402487289_thumb.jpg

then the dash was put in place just for a look see.   the floor has two coats of lacquer.

post-612-0-19107500-1402487320_thumb.jpg

I began to make the back wall.

post-612-0-17302900-1402487378_thumb.jpg

the dash was cemented in place

post-612-0-44878200-1402487501_thumb.jpg

I tossed around the paint scheme.   thinking that it would look odd with the two tone look,  I went with a solid color.   I was going to accent the windows in white,  but noting that the port holes below are brown, I have to stick with that.  not a big deal in my book   ;)

going back to the back wall,  there was a thought to box in the windows,  to create the doors for the helm

the other window was sized to fit the frame

the back wall was installed......but first the interior was painted.

I have the life boat from the Nordkap booty........the insert for the interior of the boat is not laser cut.  so I began to cut it out.   the card it comes from was curling in the opposite direction from what I need it to......go figure........so I clamped it in the boat to see if I can persuade it to go the other way.  not that this really matters.......with it totally trimmed and cut out,  it will become a bit more flimsy.  it's printed on 1/16 thick stiff plywood.

unfortunately no Piet..........I did this with the Mary Ann build,  and at that scale,  it was a pain.   of course though,  I was still new at this sort of thing,  and beginning to experiment with it.   can't say that I've progressed much beyond that.   I am going to try it on a couple of my larger scale builds,  but I'll cheat a little and use doll house hinges.  seeing what you and others on the site,  are doing with metal,  is really inspiring....but.......well,  it makes me wish I had some of those cool tools ;)

Hinges are not all that difficult to make.  What do you mean "some of those cool tools"??  All I use are razor blades, a pair of ordinary scissors, very small files, very small drill bits and a soldering iron for electronics work.  Oh yeah, a pair of strong fingers to hold the parts but Remco admonished me to get a few small pin vices ;) , I tend to file the skin off of my fingers and drill into them  :o  ;)

Trial and error, there'll be some waste but in the end it'll work out.  You should see my waste pile!
