Thank's Geoff, She's going together very smooth

Thank's Omega, I am thinking that she will be ready for water in a few week 's  ,I may have add ballast at the center of the boat, so that she will sit on her water line ( I will see after I tank test )

Best Regards,

Pete

Very interesting, the question I have is why you changed the shape of the cabin?

Hi Michael, On the plans it looks to square , this looks like water will flow over the top better, ( acting like a spray dodger ) Reality is that I like this look better

Today, Day 5 of the build , I started by enclosing the Cockpit ( I did leave an access in case I need to add Ballast ) I then applied West System Epoxy to the Hull in 2 stages . While that was drying, I found some Small Brass tubing and made a new Bowsprit, I then made the Comunications tower for Aft of the boat ( the fishing weight is to hold it up for the photos) I did add the Cabin access on top of the cabin as per plan . ( I think it looks good  ) Next will be to install the Cabin and West System the top side . Here are the results

Great looking model Pete!  I just marvel at the engineering behind this type of boat.  Wonder how this would work for larger vessels with more masts.  Cargo hauling?

Cheers,

Thank you Hans, I like the Imoca 60 cabiin style , I think it will deflect water better . I have been enjoying the Freedom of this build, I have been learning alot about these Boats , and they are Incredible , the design is alot more complex than it would appear from looking at the boat, and now that I have a better understanding of the Boat , I may have to build another, ( per todays specs )

Pete

Pete,

These boats are so wet, that complete waves are rolling over the deck, cabin and cockpit, knocking sailers down, only kept on board by their lifeline. Imagine to be on the foredeck in the Southern Ocean, freezing temperatures, and be hid by a massive wave, containing tons of water, coming at you with 30+ knots!

As these modern racers are going faster and faster the aerodynamic aspects of the design are crucial. Freeboard as low as possible, rounded deck-hul joint, winches lowered in the deck or behind the cabin, reduced standing rigging, cabins as low as possible etc etc.

Keep building!

Hans

Thank you Hans, I realized that these boats are very wet, so I sealed up the floor in the cockpit , and created an access in the cabin ( to add ballast if need be ) I just finished the second stage of the epoxy on the Deck and will have pic's later

Pete

Another Great day with the Boat , ( this Boat has become my favorite build  ) That being said, I sealed up the Cockpit floor, cut an access in the Cabin cut out the Mast step and installed the Cabin. now the only entry into the boat is thru the cabin. (  she has to be water tight , like a wine bottle with a cork in it ) I then used West System Epoxy on the Deck , the same way I did the Hull. I also used Epoxy on the Comunications Tower securing the Brass Tubes to the Base ( wich I shaped to the Correct specs ) I then turned my attention to making the Spars, This is a tapered Mast , I first cut the mast to length, ( I left the label on the Boom side of the mast ) I then with the mast on it's side cut the taper in the forward section ( never touching the Label side ) then I put the Mast label side down and maked and cut the taper on the sides of the Mast then sanded the 1/4 round on the tapered section to give it the correct profile. The mast is ready for spreaders ( and then will have Epoxy applied, for stregth ) The communications tower is still being held in place by the Fishing weight and has not been installed , Here are the results

Pete,

WOW! The real pictures along with your build log. Like it, Like it and Like it! :)

Now I wonder how to convince you to share the plans as I like to build one, for RC purpose.

There is one boat available from Kyosho or ThunderTiger but I prefer to make to one meter length.

Michael,

Thanks for those videos. The thing I dislike about RC sailboats is the "scale" effect. Most of the RC boats that I've seen don't look right to me under sail. The boat looks great, but the waves and water look out of scale. These models don't seem to suffer nearly as much.

And before anybody thinks I'm disparaging RC boats, I have the utmost admiration and respect for RC boaters and the incredible work they do. I used to have an RC sailboat, and I occasionally go to the Steel, Chapman & Hutchinson site and drool over their HMS Surprise. I'm only saying that RC boats, at this time in my life, aren't my cup of tea. Maybe they will be next year.

Thanks,

Harvey

Thanks Geoff, I am going to try and get her into primer today

Thank you Dr Per, on posting # 24 I show the drawing that I am using fof building the Boat, It would make a fantastic RC Boat ,( I am considering doing one instead of the cup boat ) I am currently working on getting RC Plans for the Ericsson Boat, I belive the length is about 4 feet

Thanks Michael, Thanks for the links to the stockmaritime boats ( they make one with the canting Keel as well ) I may build on of these in an RC Boat instead of the BMW Oracle AC Boat

Thanks Harvey, The HMS Suprise would make an intresting RC Boat

Thanks for the Awesome Video Tom, totally incredible ,it is Extreme Sailing

Hi Dr Per. , I looked into it as well, I would rather build one . I joined an RC forum a few months back , and came across someone building the Ericsson Boat , I asked him if he could send me the Plans ( so I am waiting on that ) I will be happy to share them with you , if you dont like building from a lines drawing. The new Boats for this years race are 65 feet in length, so I am looking into plans for the new boats. any Idea how they get the roller furling to work for the Gennaker ( from the Stockmaratime video ) That is a huge selling point to me wanting to build an RC version

Pete

Pete I can think of a few ways the roller reefing works they all seem a bit iffy though.

1 the jib-stay is pre twisted essentially a vertical spring and so the unfurling just requires a pull from a servo.

2 the jib-stay is geared with helical gearing through the bowsprit

3 miniature chain or ribbed belt drive (think printer belt) through the bowsprit.

I was hoping this model would give some info

Pete,

I wonder if it may be a spring-loaded feature as it goes in very quick.

I don't see the purpose of using servo in this matter. Would be too slow.

But that's just my two cents..... :)

Are you asking about how roller reefing works on a big boat, or on a model? Here's a link that shows some of what's done

http://sailing.about.com/od/learntosail/ss/rollerfurlingjib.htm

and here:

http://www.myboatsgear.com/roller-furling-systems

On a smaller boat like ours, the jib is tied to the drum on the end of the boatsprit and a swivel hoisted on the jib halyard. To open, pull on the jib sheet and ease the furling line (they wrap the opposite direction on the drum and sail, so pulling on one line will cause the other to come out)

On larger boats (and somebody correct me if I'm wrong), there's a metal track from the drum to the masthead swivel. This track has a groove in it (similar to the groove on the mainmast). The jib is hoisted with a halyard, and the jib luff is slid into the groove. Once it's up, and the sheets attached, pulling on the furling line (and easing the jib sheets) will wrap the jib around the metal track. Pulling on the jib sheet (and easing the furling line) will unwrap the sail.

If you want to change from, say, a jib to a gennaker), you leave the jib unfurled, pull in out of its track at the foot (but above the furling drum), take you jib sheets off, unshackle the halyard, and re-attach the halyard to the Gennaker. Attach the sheets and hoist away. Now you have a larger headsail that you can still furl, or replace it with a different headsail.

I understand that one of the advantages of this system (as opposed to the one we use) is that you always have a well shaped headsail luff, which really improves windward performance (probably better than a hanked on jib). Our jib is essentially set flying, so our luff really bends to leeward and hurts windward performance. But the boat design is from 1890, so it's not going to be a fast boat regardless of what we do.

And if everybody understood all this, or I'm wrong in my explanation, I apologize for wasting everyody's time.

Thanks,

Harvey

Pete and Harvey I watched the model Volvo video a few times and also went to the model site and found this. I gather from the text that the wind itself unfurls the genaker, the servo only pulls it in, which is why it unfurls so fast. very interesting thinking. and the model hardware is superbly made, by the looks of it.

Hi Michaelpsutton2, I will do that, However I will doing my own graphic's and color scheme on thi one

Thank's Dr Per, I appreciate your 2 cent's, I found a Bruce Farr designed VO 65 Line's drawing that I would build from , ( The graphic's are the same as the Stockmaratime RC Boat ) So I am thinking about building the newer version as per plan , in an RC Version ( about 30 " )

Hi Harvey, I had a Schaefer Marine furling system on the Catalina 27 I used to own, I am thinking like the one on the Stockmaratime Boat.  I think Michael Mott is correct on how the set up works ( it would just be a matter of employing it )

Thank you Michael, I appreciate it , I watched the video's a few time's and I belive that you are Correct , on how it works

Here are the Drawing's for the Farr Designed VO 65 : I would be Building the Boat from these Drawing's

Best Regards,

Pete
