Gothenborg by Popeye the sailor - Billing Boats - 1:100 scale

Recommended Posts

hello Augie......I saw Sjors......but sadly,  not you........but I see you now!  I was wondering how I can see postings while I am in process......I see how I can do it now....so cool!  this is really not a big build,  at 1:100 scale,  it's kinda small,  compared to your build.  I'm still going to cram in as much as I can.  thanks for the good word.

as you saw in that photo.......they added in the rack as well.   makes me wonder why the kit doesn't include it.......it also shows that the Gothenborg has only one set of side windows.   this also makes me wonder why the kit shows two sets.  there are other small oddities in here as well....I correct them as I see them.

for this though,  I am too late.......the discrepancy is done.

7 - 22 - 2011

this bit of progress shows some of the hull detail and molding that I added.   I still have more to do with the stern......I still haven't gotten to it yet.

I saw the rudder sock in the pictures and I thought it would be a good bit of detail to add in.  I made a tube from some sail material,  and cemented it in place.

for the balcony cap,  I thought to assemble it to the lower face of the stern and cement it on as a whole.

before the cap can be cemented in place though,  the window cello needs to be installed first.

I added more surface to the aft deck as well........the reason for this,  is due to the alterations I made to the stern section.

Nice mods Popeye, it's always good to see individuality in a build. Pity to cover up a very good 2nd planking though.

I'm well at the back but will enjoy watching even if it is with a set of bino's.

I forgot I had these pictures of the styrene molding that I have.  a lot of folks use evergreen {I think that's the name of it}........we have this type in my neck of the woods......plastruct.  should I ever get involved with model train.......I will go nuts! :)

hi Mobbsie........glad to see you here!  I'm getting more in.......hope to have it complete soon.  I do have a few other ideas that I can do before I can get those elusive deadeyes....but it would be better if I focused on other builds and get them out of the way.   you can get closer.......Sjors won't bite :)

8 - 2 - 2011

it was time to get the inner bulwarks in place.   I painted up some thin strip,  and comensed to doing them.

More work was done to the bow as well.   I wasn't too crazy with the anchors,  but decided to assemble them to see what they will look like.  the bow rail was also put into the developement mode too.

it's not too bad Mario......my focus is on two builds at the moment......but every once in a while,  I'll think of something for one of the other builds,  and then I'll work on that.   but,  if I just get my butt in gear......I probably can get these two out of the way sooner.   thanks for the good word!  ;)

I'll work on putting a bit more up here......and then I'll do some building  :)

This log is really going to help someone out in the future.

That's a very nice blue color you've developed there Popeye.  At first I though it was the masking tape (sorry ....... couldn't resist) :D

The lobster boat sisters, America and the Gothenborg.  Is that it?  I thought there was another.

Ah well, that’s way more than I can handle.  Great work on all of them.

I started to work on the rudder:

....and a little work on the life boats as well

I thought to show the life boats covered with tarps.  they will be lashed down later within the rack assembly.

..........I was having problems at this time.   I had read the article about the Gundalow.......since reading it,  I was finding it very hard to concentrate on the Gothenborg.  in fact,  you can see glimpses of the hull frame in some of the pictures.   thoughts and ideas about the Gundalow would not let me go.....the pull finally made me table the Gothenborg........she laid dormant for a while...............

1 - 27 - 2012

with the build of the Gundalow finally finished........the cover can be removed from the Gothenborg and work can continue.

thanks for looking in Bob........I know it's crazy......but I'm used to it by now.   compared to others here at MSW,  I'm still a relative newbie.......I think I've only been doing these about four years now {I lost track}.

I've started the logs......I can just pick them up later.  thanks for the good word.......and not to worry,  I can only work on one build at any given moment :)

4 - 13 - 2012

I forgot what I was doing between the time frame.......but I brought the Gothenborg back out.

I did some small detail work at this time,  adding a little something here and there.  there is the gap between the aft deck and the balcony,  I decided to make a locker that will span the width of the aft deck.  I will need to make a slight change in the curvature of the balcony to hide this as well.

I added extra wood to the fore chain plates, so I could put more of a curvature to match the hull.

the kit kit supplied a single pair of bobstays......the actual ship has two pairs.   I made the extra pair.

post-612-0-69091400-1362506871.jpg

the kit also did not show where the the anchor holes were to be.....from looking at the main drawing and the pictures,  I figured out where they were to be.

I made up the anchor rope by staining it first,  and then painting on diluted white glue.

the anchor ropw was cut into two equal lengths and then knotted on one end.  the kit supplied two hawse grommets for the holes.   after they were threaded onto the ropes,  they were cemented in place.

Hello Popeye,

Finally, here she is ..... Glad to see you've got the Gothenberg back up here.

Just a few more logs to go, you are nearly up-to-date again.

Thanks for reposting. She still looks great.

Take care,

Anja

towards the end of this session.....I got stupid and knocked off one of the stern railings from the balcony......don't really remember what I was doing......so I can't safely say this won't happen again.

I had seen this in the pictures.......I forget what this part is called,  but they are quite prominant in the pictures,  so they will be added,  along with the woolings that hold them in place.

this session pertains to the picture you saw earlier.......I was quite pleased with how they came out.  on other ships,  they were lashed to the sides of the mast.......added support {I suppose},  but on the Gothenborg,  they were lashed on the fronts of the masts.   they were sanded {edges removed} and notched to accept the wooling lashes.

I started to do some further work on the chain plates.   I had seen some decorative work to theirs,  that I liked a lot.......I started to try this out on the Goth.   of course,  the pictures don't lie........this was not done on the actual ship........so I had to change my direction on this.....just as well.

the rudder was the next little project I under took.   too bad it wa all for naught.......I had my gungeons and pintles upside down.   my thanks to John for pointing that out to me.....it's a good thing I didn't fasten it to the stern.......just a dry fit.

I wasn't going to bore you with pictures.........but,  in the interest of  "he who shall not be named",  I have.

here is the redo of the rudder.   I had to make another rudder to start off with.......the original one was riddled with bullet holes........looks cool........but, no.   I did make up a few gungeon / pintle assemblies,  to replace them......but I believe I did use one or two of the original ones I made.

you'll note that I had also cemented a length of wood on the the inner edge of the chain plates.....this was to get a better cement point,  and to bring them out just a tiny bit more.

11 - 14 - 2012

with the chain plates assembled and cemented in place,  it is time to make and install the actual chains for them......here is how they were done.

with the starboard side done,  all painted with black........I turned to the port side,  where the progress did lack.

the touch ups were done,  the paint brush was clean.......the chain plates were finished,  flat black,  a light sheen.

I looked her over,  up and down......from front to rear,  and all around

I came to the conclusion, from what I could tell.........for my first time,  I did rather well

I put her aside,  but not out of sight.......happy modeling to all,  hope you think it's alright!  ;)

LOL!!!!  You seem to have slipped into the poetic dimension now, Popeye!

Looking really good - and if only you could barter eyebolts for spinach - just imagine!!!!!

I seem to recall a discussion around the cost of Oreo's and the loss of Hostess when this first came out.....

.......and so,  here it is........the end of the progress.   I am all caught up with this build,  in where it stands now.   I'm still waiting until I can order the correct parts to continue the build.   perhaps I can get something going with her......there are a few things I can do.   to me,  this build has gone on too long.....I'm not used to having a build last over a year.   true,  it's my first wood build of a period sailing ship,  but I'm usually not in the habit of tabling builds this much.   wood build have been a total eye opener for me.....the ideas and concepts are endless!  now that I have built myself into a corner again......I have to build my way out.  I find this hobby to be quite habit forming........when something pops into my head......I feel I have to get it out....or it bugs the heck out of me,  until I do.   I think I have a handle on my manic constructive disorder, and I look forward to the day,  when I only have one.......or maybe two builds in the works at any given time.

this last bit of progress deals with the dilema that I am faced with at the moment.  the dead eye assortment is not correct as we have all discussed.  the tops and upper crosstrees require a smaller dead eye.  I have been trying to get some of them......but after one failed attempt,  I still don't have them yet.  I also found that the holes that are pre-drilled into the tops are not correct as well.   I am having to redrill them...even if I get the proper size dead eyes - 3.5mm.

post-612-0-53105500-1363011184.jpg

this is with the 5mm dead eyes.......clearly too big!  they are even too large for the tops.......I would never be able to get the correct number of dead eyes on any of the given tops.   the crosstrees are not even correct......something else that I have to do.

I have pretty much used up all of the 3.5mm  dead eyes that came with the kit........I wished that I had done the masts differently.......I would probably have the first level ratlines done already.   I would be reveling in the fun that the rest of you folks are having :)   I feel like I'm at a school dance,  sitting on a bench.....like a wallflower.   I do have one picture that I have here,  that has been in my computer for a while now.......I was hoping that I could get back to the build.  I had done some of the 3.5mm dead eyes on one of the tops.

so,  that's it my friends.......here I am at this point.   the AmericA build is almost done.........as well as the lobsie twin build.........I will make a promise to you all.......when these are done,  I WILL have the deadeyes......and then......look out!  ;)
