Yes, Brian, "almost done". Good joke. I like it. The essence of enjoyment is in the process of work and creativity in solving technical and aesthetic issues and concerns. This is the reason why always after, we are going to the next,  and the next,  and the next model.

It's also nice to spent time - when not working on the model - but think about the details - how to solve them, or while digging around the Internet, and the time to chat with fans of the same hobby. Many good ideas appear just in that time, and exactly that situation hardly pulls you back to the workshop to try it and to apply. And that all is great pleasure

So. let it be.

some things are more enjoyable than others.

Personally, I like rigging, other works are just (!) preparing for rigging ... and I can not wait rigging ... and first you see on sail ship is - sails and ropes. and again sails and ropes, and more sails and ropes. Only modeler or hard lover see something else like details of on deck (for instance decking flooring), lines of hull, proud stern or elegant bow, or ...

Of course, tastes are different, someone like galleys, someone like sailing ships, and someone like a most beautiful among them - clippers.

Personally, galleys are nice, and surelly can be very interesting and provocative for building, but, cannons cannons cannons and more cannons, and only few sails .... and very hard planking....  That was and that is my thinking, same as long ago when I had to choose between Bounty kit or Cutty-Sark kit

Nenad, overall our time is what we make of it, it is good to see that you are progressing with the hull planking, this is like building the foundation of a house when the hull is finished then you can lavish over the small details of the rigging.

Michael

Current builds  Bristol Pilot Cutter 1:8;      Skipjack 19 foot Launch 1:8;       Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 14 1:8

Other projects  Pilot Cutter 1:500 ;   Maria, 1:2  Now just a memory

Future model Gill Smith Catboat Pauline 1:8

Finished projects  A Bassett Lowke steamship Albertic 1:100

Anything you can imagine is possible, when you put your mind to it.

21:00 And first hand of first phase of first side of hull planking is finally over.

Why it is impossible to attach files from android with Opera app. ? With froyo 2.1. fabric inteerenet app it is slow slow slow

Sorry, pictures will be shown later when family battle for laptop finish. What do you think: who will be a winner of that battle? And most important question : when ? And another question : how much computers are enough for four members family? Ahh ... never ending story of our life.

23:00  Laptop is fortunately captured, pictures successfully transferred  from FB and here is today progress vrom different angle view.

Obviously. there is much work left to do with sanding and filling to get proper shape, especially in transition area between hull and the plank. But first, to finish another side of ship at same way. I think this is important to achieve symmetry as much is possible

But she began to look powerfull ( or dreaming ?)

Hi There Dognut, & NevadM...Kim Here...!!! I just happened to run across your posts while doing a search for some of my old posts, which were lost in Cyberland at MSW during the Crash...( So Sad !!) Anyway, I completed a 'Constructo' version of the Cutty, a few years ago, and although it was pretty exciting at the time, I was REALLY disappointed in the'Scale', and the proportions of many of the parts & pieces after completion...(I'm one of those 'perfectionists', and tend to modify TONS of stuff in all of the 'kits' and scratch builds that I've done over the years, as I go...I'll be posting some of these pictures again, before too long, and you'll be able to see the HUGE differences between the 'Constructo' version, & the others that I've completed..especially the 'Revell/Monogram' kits (Heavilly modified !!!) that I've recently finished...the 'Constructo' Kit looked 'Great' per the photo on the cover of the box/kit...But WHOA...!!! as I progressed with the build, the more frustrating, and difficult it became to correct the scale differences that were discovered...only too late...!!! Anyway, It DID turn out to be 'Okay' but I just thought I'd send along my 'words of caution' on this manufacture / vendor of the kit... ( Sorry, I didn't intend to compose a 'book' here...!!!  Looking forward to hearing back from everyone again, after all of us get our build logs, and pictures replaced here at MSW...!!! Blessings everyone...!!! Kim

In mean time, until some valuable progress will be made to show, I found some very interesting to see, and I want to share it. On Serbian forum http://www.krilapetrovgrada.org.rs/forum/index.php?topic=1559.0 there are lot of pictures from Kubok LenExpo, Sankt Peterburg 2012

Very impressive (especcialy work of Ivan Trtanj) and more than a little bit frustrating. What a f...g amateur am I. But, there is no reason not to go on with my Citty. She obviosly will not be designated to exhibitions or museums, but I am sure that she will be very nice and impressive in my room or in my office. And there is much satisfaction and enjoy in making her majesty. And I think she likes it, too

Real inspiration for us, mortals

My brain do not sleep, even I am in office. What do you think about pointed tip of toothpicks painted in dark canoes as imitation of wood wedge hull ???

And one more question: Is it usual in ship modelling, after finishing some part ( and when corrections are not possible without large damage) to start thinking about working again from zero, to avoid this "mistake" or piece of work which you can do better again? For example, panelling decks with veneer - and then sanding - wood structure of veneer is not clear when comparing with, for instance, panelling with balsa

This is what I mean

First is picture on my Cutty

post-4738-0-97776400-1395304127.jpg

Second is picture of Vladimir Manzalović work, and it seem better for me.

post-4738-0-81268900-1395304128.jpg

Now, if want to correct this, I must first demolish almost everything on deck, and in that case it will be better to start over.

And you can ALWAYS do something better than you do. Or think that you can do better. Where is the end ? Where is frontier ?

Hello Nenad,

I agree with Popeye, don't second guess yourself, trust yourself. You are doing great.

Even if you are not seeing a positive result yet, it will come.

Don't think you have made the wrong decision, instead know that things are working out good for you and that you are learning and growing.

There may very well be things you will do differently the next time.

Mistakes gives us an opportunity to fix all sorts of things we think we may have screwed up. We always make the best decision we have access to at the moment.

And last but not least, go easy on yourself.

Maybe it is not a good example, but in learning how to walk, you had to crawl first.

Maybe you even wobbled your knees a few times. But eventually you found your stability.

These are the lessons I have learned during my modeling.

We have a Dutch saying: the grass is always greener on the other side.

Take care,

Anja

Thank you, Anja, for your kind words and supporting.

The devil is no such black as it seems, as it is told here. Wishes and possibility, and a real wish for days longing minimum 30 hours instead 24. It would be very interesting. Just share some thoughts and feelings. I suppose it is allowed in topics of MSW from time to time , if not overdrive. And for me ( I hope to follower too when reading ) is more interesting when posting  to combine that with building progress, some kind of building extended diary, or building blog. Nobody likes boring and dry writing style to read, so I try not to write in that way

Thanks again

I found primary planking with very short strips also applied in topic

Nao Santa María by J. Muñoz - Captain America discovery,

It is interesting that different builders from different parts of the world got same idea about same thing, without consulting and contact between. Before I come in MSW i did not read any building and modeler forum with building progress diary, no modeling literature reading about, no picture seen

Really amazing

Nenad,

I think all of us go through what you are going through.... Is it good enough? Can I do better?  Start over? Continue?  Questions. Questions.  No answers.  Sometimes we start over, other times we carry on.  And there's never enough hours to do what we want.

I'm right there with you in pondering all this.

Please help me with my poor English, I am little confused

"you are off to a good start" - does it in slang mean good or not good start

I am not little girl and anybody opinion will dont offend me, just curious

I know I'm not doing enough accurate and no by the rules, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the work, and I think that the ship will be exceptional decoration, although not in a museum or exhibition. Cutty is not designated for sale (until I die)

And enjoying  is exactly the point of this

Also creativity

Also handwork instead hard brain work as a creative resting

Also making something from nothing with solving technical problems

Also learn something about sail ships in history

And chat with other modelers and share ideas

And enjoy in others excellent work and masterpieces

Thx anyway, I ll keep on going until the end

Yes, Mark, I really had a great fun in making Cutty. I really like challenges

In the meantime, until I do concrete progress in the my work, wishing to create a clear picture of what the problems are, and to explain what matters caused my approach to building a model, I will put some photos of - ONLY documentation that came with the kit (nine sheets)

Fortunately, there are photos of the ship and its details from Greenwich. Fortunately there also photos of finished model Cutty Sark from the internet and various forums, with many needed details

Without any doubt, the plans I have, can only create a simple framework and an approximate picture of what needs to be to done, but this is not enough, by no means.

Maybe it is enough for experienced and more dedicated modellers who use literature and/or documentation obtained directly from the museum in Greenwich or otherwise, but I rather think that that kind of the modeller, such plans would mean nothing but maybe a good joke. For us rest mortals, ...

About some details with I crashed earlier in my building, I have already put notes in the post (deck planking)

Only for example, look at the detail of the last rib in a row towards the bow

post-4738-0-19507100-1372668152_thumb.jpg

It is simply impossible to make out of plywood and to remain it stay in one piece and, at the same time, slipped through a hole drilled trunk mast 9mm thick as the bottom edge ribs thick plywood that is made hull (4mm). In addition, even you have magic Wand of Harry Potter, that line will be coverings in the peak district but shows some curvature and bounces outwards compared to plywood, which automatically leads to a cascade of plating to be solved somehow. On the other hand, if you make a wider base of that rib, then plywood would burst, and the trunk struts could be installed, and then you are back to the problem as it further increases the mentioned problem of planking. And it is clear why I decided to improvise, in mean to try to solve it during the puttying and sanding only after the completion of the skin, and with the second layer planking with veneer. The question is whether it is at all possible, and will eventually be able to cover it that later with two decorated masks on the bow

post-4738-0-89981400-1372669707_thumb.jpg

Another example - A preliminary study of other rigging plans that are available on the internet, both for the ship and for other clippers, and only a superficial analysis of photographs of my plans (mast, sails and ropes), it is immediately noticed that the rigging plan in my sheets is more than reduced, without the necessary details. It might fit a much smaller model, but not the model that will be almost a meter long. So, following the study and design of rigging plans from the beginning (when get there)

And one more

Look at how is projected inside part of deck fence !!!

post-4738-0-12814900-1372668262_thumb.jpg

For smaller model, maybe.

That was the reason to think about start over, but I gave up, and decide to proceed as I start with hope

And such examples are measured in tons

However, an ambitious project with many obstacles on the way to the end.

Nevertheless, that is the challenge and charm, and I really enjoy it (sadomasochism ?)

post-4738-0-09388300-1372668327_thumb.jpg

And that is really ALL.

To be honest,  there is also a simple list of details with really poor description of the material (eg. 2x5mm moldings, moldings rounded with  diameter 5mm, 4mm plywood , and nothing nothing nothing more)

I am sure that resolving this will be great challenge and enjoy for me, and I hope - also to followers of this topic

Thank you friends. Run away and escape. Yes. With no consequences

In mean time, in my thoughts is next step, with another serious question about, and I need your advice if you have some

In post #4 Sven noticed as a good idea „to put in the deadeye chains before the bulwarks“. I think so, but that good idea make pretty huge next problem

As I approach to sanding, big question arise – it is obviously that comes very rough work of sanding, and covering, and sanding again, and covering again, and sanding, with turning model up and down, left and right, from hand to hand, to desk to air, pressuring it roughly and slightly, shaking it ... Quite earthquake for model WITH SMALL SENSITIVE PARTS very exposed

Has anybody some idea how to protect little sensitive parts during sanding and manipulating over model?

Some more planking, and a nice supprise. Only light try of sanding balsa strips gives very encouraging results. It seems to be fine.

your question has good and bad points.   without a proper 'sanding jig'  to support the hull while your finishing the planking,  you could run into a problem knocking the dead eyes off.   although,  he is correct that this would be a good time to cement them in place.  I'd suggest doing it later......a small pair of snips can be used to trim the excess thread.

Hello Nenad;  I too faced, and am indeed yet facing all those questions.  I thought long and hard about even installing the bulwarks before planking, but decided to anyhow.  My bulwarks are made from 1/32" basswood sheet, and are quite delicate.  Indeed, during the planking and sanding process, no matter how careful I was, they cracked several times.  I gave up repairing them after the second crack and waited until planking, sanding, coppering, and some painting were complete.  I also debated about installing the deadeye chains before planking in order to secure them better below deck.  I did not do this, and it may come back to haunt me later.  We'll see.  This hobby is indeed about the journey more than the destination, and if I mess up during the process, I'll move along to another area and tackle my mess up later.  That is what's great about this hobby;  if you get frustrated with decking, planking, etc. you can work on building a deckhouse or shaping a mast.  Or making cannons, if it's a warship.

My best advice is to get ahold of G. Campbell's plans (3 sheets) as good plans are a saving grace for any ship modeler.  I treat mine as the final word when I see discrepancy with kit plans, and indeed the old kit I have had no instructions supplied; just Campbell's plans.  It can be very discouraging when poorly made kit plans (most are, unfortunately) disagree with themselves.

I think you're doing a great job;  keep at it; I would say most people do not have the patience for this hobby, which is harder than building a house.

But we all reap the rewards! :10_1_10:

After one more business trip with 6 hours of driving, after visiting Monastery Ravanica from XIV century

post-4738-0-47228700-1373007679_thumb.jpg

finally at home. And instead resting, go downstairs

More fun this evening, continue toward bow, and then ... hear some scream from the garden, "who took my pincers .... " or whatever ... I tried to pretend I'm not here, but noise continues. Cute short discussion follows without winner, but she did not fail to note that should a hair cut grass. As if I do not know that

It appears that some clip are more important than appearing of the both symmetric bow lines.

How does she not understand?

She has more than 200 clips and exactly this taken 10 are most important this evening ?

And I have only one ship
