HMS King George V by RGL - FINISHED - Tamiya - 1/350 - PLASTIC

The four photos show her in 41 in drydock after her ramming of a destroyer and a still from a video after he returned from the USA (paintwork falling off) The cable is at the front and rear. .

 

 

 

The this photo from her during the invasion of Sicily in 1943 shows the rear of the cable present, notice the nameplate is framed by it.  There does not appear to be cable at the bow.

 

 

 

You can see the 1945 shot of her stern with no cable and some portholes closed over.

Now from someones personal blog, private images of a destroyer oiling from KGV in 1943 (colour pattern is correct, and the cable till appears to be running along top of the armor belt.

So, I think I may have solved it, this photo from 1943 shows something terminating into the hull from rearwards, and there is no degaussing cable going past this point.

A possible avenue of research is that in May–June 1942 at Liverpool damage from the collision with HMS Punjabi was repaired and the external degaussing coil was replaced with an internal coil.

I read that and expected the rear bit may have been removed as well, but obviously not and maybe it was only internal at the bow not the stern. The unit history does not mention it at all and I can only go off the photos

Maybe start on the Titanic, instead of writing about it ... now you've seen how it works by following RGL's builds. Did you see his logs on the Japanese armada?

Greg beat me to it, but he has, as I do, a lot of those portlets from Yamato, your paper punch idea is nice, but maybe only for over sized portholes, brass rod would make it very expensive

 

You have set yourself quite some prepping, mate .. drill out portholes, making the deck flush ... I'll stick to rigging for the time being ...

Oh, I tried a hole punch, the circle made curls up due to the nature of the punch.

Besides, (I'll tell you a secret if you keep it to yourself) I went ahead and bought the Indianapolis and have located the brass and fighting tops I will need to build it as the Houston! Hiding it from the Admiral because she REALLY wants the Titanic as a night light!

Ok, I’ve made a start on the hull, only 120 or so portholes drilled out, all the deck details cut off and sanded and the 3 purge ended deck stuck on, including some plastic card to fill the hole amidships. 

 

This Ringol set from alliance Modelworks will be used above the portholes, and you can also see the amount of detail that needs to be scribed into the smooth hull. 

 

The plan is to do the layers of primer first so I can build up some thickness then place the ringols and the rear part of the ships degaussing cable.

At least you'v got your work cut out for you. That's quite a lot of portholes to replace, and what I see from this end, some smallplates on the hull ...

A few coats of rattle can primer today and some armour plates scribed in.

I think this would classify as a form of torture.......   the diagram shows the square portholes too.......are those going to be added as well?

Why yes they are! How could I not? I’m surprised that Pontos did not include some but I got some from MK1 design, same as I used in HMS Dreadnought

Ringols added, degaussing cable added but terminated near the A turret, as far as I can tell the bow cabling  was placed internally in 1942. 

 

The 6 a side square hatches added.

This looks like a great project and you are certainly off to a really good start.  Your research in your quest for accuracy will result in a great model of her.

 

No room in the rafters so i'll take a pew in the foyer (better access to the popcorn out there :))
