To Druxey - thanks for informations, I discussed this situation with my friend who had the same problem. I cover these lead items with clear varnish and the whole hull is then preserved with the wax. I hope that it will be OK.
To Alexandru - I am using the french Sajou thread for the ropes (https://sajou.fr/en/339-fil-au-chinois-gloving-thread-1000m-cones). Unfortunately this thread is only in one thicknesess.

    Hi Group,
Quick question - wondering if there is an optimum speed when using your Proxxon MF70.  The pear wood I am using has a tendency to chip - any tips as to running at higher or slower speeds to avoid it ?
    Thanks

For the next weeks, i have to make some curves. For this section, there are no real obligations to follow exactly the plans. This is why Boudriot says: It only has to please the eye.

Go with this Dewalt Scroll Saw 788 and Stand - no vibration.  I somehow managed to scratch build Confederacy with a crappy Delta saw that had so much vibration.  The Dewalt is a game changer

Wow - just wow - I have been collecting Ancre books and Monographs over the past few years.  This is by far the finest.  The incredible amount of detail in photos and plans are off the chart.  Some of the previous Monographs require back up of the 74 Gun Series (which I own) as a reference.  This one is a stand alone - everything is in here to make an incredible model - one that obviously influenced the Super Frigates of the US.  I ordered it two weeks ago and it arrived today.  I can't recommend this one enough - its a must have for anyone's library who love French ships.  Bravo Gerard !

    Hello everyone.
I hope this post finds everyone happy & healthy and dealing with this virus OK. I think it has touched all of us in one way or another.
I've been plugging along and got one side of the planking finished up yesterday.
It turned out pretty good and I've learned some lessons to apply to the other side.  Mostly pay more attention to my seams and the tick marks....

The paper clips are there to protect the stern frames.  Yes, I snapped one off but thankfully it was a clean break so not a big issue.  Those clips do a great job protecting them.

Question about using the wipe-on-poly.  How often does everyone apply it??  I like the way it looks and protects the wood but I always seem to have issues with glue sticking to it down the road.
I have not applied it yet. It's just wiped down with a damp rag to see how it looks and help locate any areas that need more attention....  and there are quite a few...
I have a little more sanding to do and then some paint touch-up on the wales but I'll hold off till I get the other side finished up.
    Be safe out there!!!

Greg, You're right! Certain aspects of the model are quite complex. I have just begun to work on the first Qgallery and find that these laser cut parts need quite a bit of tweaking in order to fit according to plan.

To begin the Qgallery assembly, I used Chuck's template to establish where the upper support beam for the stool would go. This beam should run parallel to the planking, but the template could yield a different result depending on the angle of the transom or planking run, for example.

Luckily the upper beam is parallel. This photo was taken slightly below straight on, therefore the curve of the beam gives the impression that it's not parallel. When you check the beam try to move your eyes level to the beam to see if it's parallel to the planking. After setting the upper beam I then added the lower beam. The two beams need to be faired prior to planking the stool.

To get the planking shape, I moistened and clamped the plank to the two beams. I used the heat gun to set the shape and dry the wood.

I almost forgot to mention that when fairing the two beams I used the drop as a guide when fairing the lower beam. You don't want the planking to stand too proud of the drop. I had to reduce the lower beam depth slightly on my ship.

    Mike

Yesterday I finished planking the starboard side by adding the stern post.
I did some sanding, but that is not completely finished yet.
    Here are some photos.
and some more pictures from the hull upside down.

Well here is my port side frame reveal completed, in the end it turned out to be 23 frames that i could fit between the bulkheads.
I did the treenails with 20lb black line and reversed the pattern aft of the deadflat frames.

I'm so happy with how this came out in the end that I'm considering building one on the starboard side as well but we shall see.

I've now completed the following: the drop planks and the first two strakes below the wales;  the second layer of wale planking and painting the wales black; and the black strake above the wales.

I began the drop plank installation by following Chuck's two plank tool suggestion to line off the two strakes below the wales.Although the laser cut drop plank was a big help, I still found the fitting process a bit tricky.

The second layer of wale planking was straight forward and simply followed the first layer. The forward portion of each strake was sanded down to appear to fit into the rabbet. I painted the upper edge of the top strake and the bottom edge of the bottom strake before gluing them in place, ensuring a clean edge. The wale was painted with multiple coats of  Modelmaster engine black acrylic.

The black strake was made using 1/64" planking strips and was left unpainted.

There are a few miscellaneous tasks left before beginning the lower hull planking.

    Bob
