I think one of my next side projects is going to be learning how to correctly sharpen edges. Excellent tools are not very good if you cannot sharpen them or even worse mess them up doing it incorrectly.

Seeing as how so many people have had trouble with the frames breaking off during fairing this looks like a very nice solution. Nice that it doesn't require some complex milling equipment or saw or something.

Been exploring the Japan Woodworker site and am enjoying it. I am at the point of life where I only want to acquire quality tools. I am tired of trying to "make do" with the bargain basement specials I have been using.

Nice bracing. Did you hand cut all those notches or use a table saw or something?

Welcome! This is a great place to learn. Ask away any question you want. If somewhere around here can't come up with the answer they can at least point you in the right direction.

Planking looks like it's coming along wonderfully now. Thanks for the detailed explanation. This is definitely going in my little notebook of post to remember.

Old Floquil paints?
MEDDO replied to MEDDO's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
After a thorough mixing was able to use the paints and they went on very smooth and worked great. Happy with the final result. -

Thank you Bob. I like the muted colors they look pretty nice against the natural wood.

Old Floquil paints?

I kinda like the names... Reefer white, Southern green, Grimy black, Engine black, Roof brown... Too bad I missed those other cool colors -
I think I'll follow along with you. I'm interested to see how you deal with the planking challenges on this boat. Seeing as how awesome your small boat looks on your Pegasus build I'm sure this will be no problem. I am also strongly considering this for my next build. I also have not planked a hull for a very long time (greater than 10 years).

Thank you Dave. And thanks for all the likes everyone. I'm now in the process of building all of these items off the ship as I do as soon as I attatch something to the hull it's probably going to break off when I move it around. Once everything is completely built and painted up that I will have an "attachment party".

Spent the night putting wipe on poly on all the places I had to modify at the head and the stern. I forgot how bad that stuff smells even in a ventilated room.

Was able to start on the rest of the armament. Painting went well. Once again the kit want you to make something out of the styrene strips. Much like the pump handles of post #232 I did not want to use this and then "paint it some color". I simply used a decking strip instead. After I get the base plate on tonight will end up painting them black i think. (ouch one tab broke off while working on it)

I will likely move over to acrylics once I need new colors or run out of these jars. -

Jack I may have to get me one of those things. It took forever to stir up a jar by hand tonight. -

I am going to give them a try today. I like the idea of a (slow) dremel mixer. With these paints I am going to be using them on the resin stuff. There are a few scrap pieces to practice on first. -

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
