MEDDO reacted to kurtvd19 in Byrne's Saw Reference (also good for other desktop hobby saws)
One tip on using the tilt table. If the saw is kept level using the tilt table is a bit awkward. Use a couple of wedges under the saw so the tilt table is level with the bench top and it does away with the awkward working on the tilt table and the tendency for gravity to work against holding the wood against the uphill fence.

MEDDO reacted to Roger Pellett in 2021 NRG CONFERENCE
The first NRG Conference that I attended took place in the historic town of Marietta, Ohio, population 16,000 and 100 miles from any sizable city. My wife and I were living there and I read about the upcoming conference in our local small town newspaper. I had never heard of the Guild prior to this.
Attendees included Harold Hahn, Bob Bruckshaw, Jack Kerzow, and Merrit Edson, all regular NRJ contributors and master modelers.
I joined up immediately and have been a member ever since (45 years this October).

MEDDO reacted to Guillermo Eduardo Madico in HMS Winchelsea 1764 by Guillermo Madico - semi scratch build
Thank you Eduard an for all the likes.
I have sanded the hull to 400 grid an give it 3 coast of water base satin latex translucent paint. I sanded the bulk guards as per instructions and added the reference cap rails except for the waste.
Thought I will remove the slay to get better pictures.
Best,
G

MEDDO reacted to Roger Pellett in 2021 NRG CONFERENCE
I visited the Dossin Museum in Detroit years ago. Unless it has been renovated in the past several years, I found little of interest there.
For those of us who routinely travel with our spouses, it’s not worth going if they are going to be unhappy. Many of us are older and our spouses are too. If the conference is held in an urban area, they will be too intimidated to venture out on their own, and it increases stress on those of us attending if they do. In this regard Mystic and New Bedford were good choices and I assume that Oxnard, CA will be too.

MEDDO reacted to JpR62 in Medway Longboat - 1742 - 1:24 Scale - by JpR62
As maple seems to have won unanimous support, it is therefore this species of wood that will be used.
Legos blocks and a piece of wood slipped into the gap provided to receive the keel ensure perfect symmetry of the two pieces.
A photocopy of the plan is used to aid in the placement of pieces on the base.
The extra keel copy is used to properly align the two pieces when gluing.
The base is finished. More than to apply one last layer of teak oil.
Provisional test of placement.
It's time to start working on painting friezes.

—I accidentally deleted this post, reposting just to put a cap on the tree nail discussion. —-
After a lot of contemplation and with the input and encouragement from many of you I’ve made the decision NOT to tree-nail. I like the look of my hull as it is.
I put these couple of rows on my broken hull, put on some WOP yesterday with the intent to practice practice today. I sat there looked at it for a while and said - No thanks, moving on. And so I

MEDDO reacted to SJSoane in HMS Bellona 1760 by SJSoane - Scale 1:64 - English 74-gun - as designed
HI Gary, doesn't it feel good to be ahead of Wikipedia!🙂 And by the way, I was pointed by Alan (AON) to your posting on your stove, which I haven't looked at for some time. You did an an outstanding job on that, an inspiration!
A small update, but important to me. I finally installed both the spirketting and the quickwork on the port side of the bow. The quickwork was challenging, in having to fit between two existing pieces, with no room to maneuver, while at the same time dealing with constantly clamping to the curve as I tried to fit it. But it came out OK, including scribed planking you can just see. I have also temporarily put in the hawse hook, just to see the area where the hawse holes will finally come through. A couple of routed rabbets provide slots for the spirketting and quickwork to slide behind the hook while still leaving a surface for the hook to butt directly against the frames for a positive gluing connection.

while magnificent models have been built using just a pocket knife, sandpaper and some elmers glue, beautiful and well made tools are a joy unto themselves

I thought I would put in a request for Chris' consideration since we are speculating about what models he might have in mind to eventually add to his selection. I love the sleek lines and lateen sails of the Chebec also called Xebex or Chebeque. These fast warships are incredibly beautiful in my opinion and I would love to see Chris make a model kit for one of them someday.
