I'm wondering after seeing no posts here in 2 years, if anyone has figured out the problem with the belts stretching and causing uneven or lumpy rope. I had a thought the other day about it, and wondered if removing the belts, when not in use, might solve that problem, or if there was another fix.

Those shrouds, stays, and Ratlines all look great Dale. And I see you have a good start on the running rigging.

I agree! I forgot to mention also that my rigging plans say that if I wish to rig her with sails that numerous belaying pins and eye-bolts will have to be added, and their location would be up to me, but to use logic when deciding.

The plans in most of these kits leave something to be desired. My plans actually say that some points will need to be doubled up, and that it was captain's choice as how to rig it. It leaves a lot of room for "artistic interpretation".

That's absolutely very good news about the prostate cancer issue Piet! And you've got all my hopes for the same with your other tests. The 019 looks great setting there in all her glory! Outstanding detail you've put into this boat. Downloaded the pic so I could zoom in and admire her proper. Good luck tomorrow

Whoa! That looks excellent Matt! I think you and Buck both went to the same classes for this tiny stuff. I like the star carving and the working lid. Very nice! Cheers

MDF for laser-cutting new frames
GLakie replied to rshousha's topic in CAD and 3D Modelling/Drafting Plans with Software
I think MDF would be good for bulkheads if it comes with a warning or something to keep moisture away from it. As a stable platform, it IS better than solid hardwood, and plywood for warping, just keep it away from water.- 25 replies

MDF for laser-cutting new frames
GLakie replied to rshousha's topic in CAD and 3D Modelling/Drafting Plans with Software
MDF also doesn't react too well to water. Moisture tends to make it fall apart. Maybe not good for those who apply wet planks on bulkheads to dry in place.- 25 replies

If we learn from our mistakes, I must be pretty smart now.
GLakie replied to skipper1947's topic in Wood ship model kits
I think she looks fine Skip. On mistakes, I can say I've made my share and I think there's not too many people could say they've never made any. The trick is to learn from them, so we don't keep making the same one over and over. -
That's some really nice sewing work you've done on your sails Frank. So the rigging fun begins. Cheers

Thanks Ed! Much appreciated! Always wondered if there was a difference between the two. Cheers

Fell apart when I put the 2 halves together. Couldn't figure out the science of it all, flat on the bottom, domed at the top. Thought I'd be clever and put the dome of the first layer at the bottom so flat side of the second layer would be on the flat side of the bottom. Instead-----chaos! Tasted good though!

That's outstanding work Ed. Is Skulpey and Magic Sculpt basically the same or is one easier to work with for certain applications than the other?

Mark is right. Looked it up and found this:--"Scantling--Dimensions of timbers forming a ship's structure." Wow, it seems we all learned something here. I was under the impression it simply meant the contents, i.e. buckets, boxes, tools, ect.. Aaahhhh this forum------the gift that keeps on giving! Thanks Mark

Be careful there Captain! Matt says they might have been breeding with ninja squirrels. Lord knows what that result might bring.

As nice of a job you've done on those scantlings there Captain, it would be a shame to cut back? Maybe a net-sling set-up resembling what the mighty "Squirrel Whisperer" has done?

Nice job on the tiller repair and barrels there Captain. Since the last of the list is complete, I expect there's only some touch-up left? Cheers

Echo by dvm27 - Cross Section
GLakie replied to dvm27's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1751 - 1800
That was what I thought when I saw it Greg. It would be good to do the cross section first, then the full scale version afterword, to be displayed together, using the same building techniques as the first. Cheers -

Happy Birthday and Happy Easter Greg! Hope it's a good one. -
She does look fantastic mounted there Matt. Great job! If the records are correct, then it would've been crowded, loaded for a lengthy trip. And yes, after a few weeks on the open water in those conditions, I can imagine things did get pretty testy at times, and probably more than once, someone got launched over-board in a fight. Cheers and Well Done!

Well they did a wonderful job of getting her back together Matt, and I'm sure the squirrels will come up with a solution after a couple mugs of grog. They're very clever that way.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
